"Give back to the sire the best blood of his dam"

The MalaMala JR strain adheres to the Australian Jack Russell Standards. The distinctive traits developed by rational and selective line-breeding as far back as the 1970’s in Australia resulted in a proven bloodline delivering dogs having a good temperament, highly intelligent and active. The phenotype trademark of these consecutive generations is a tan and white coat, either smooth rough or broken, and a proud history of champions in the bloodline.

Our Sire (Highveld Peter) is paternally linked within the first 4 generations to Ch. Malung Jim Beam, one of the the famous ‘Four of Malung’, line-bred through Southernbell Sooty.

Our Sire (Highveld Peter) is maternally linked within the first 4 generations to Ch. Malung Jim Beam, one of the the famous ‘Four of Malung’, line-bred through Southernbell Sooty’s sibling, Southernbell Seen. Here Charlmar introduce through a selective outcross breeding programme, bi***es from quality South African bloodlines, developing a distinctive Charlmar strain.

Our first Dam (Charlmar Kaleysia) is paternally linked within 4 generations to to Ch. Malung Jim Beam through Southernbell Seen, sibling of our sire's Southernbell Sooty with the distinctive signature of the selective outcrossing with South African quality Jack Russell strains seen in the sire’s maternal bloodline.

Our first Dam (Charlmar Kaleysia) is maternally linked within 4 generations to Ch. Malung Jim Beam through Southernbell Seen, sibling of our sire's Southernbell Sooty with the distinctive signature of the selective outcrossing with South African quality Jack Russell strains seen in the sire’s maternal bloodline

Our second Dam (Highveld Taita) is paternally linked within 4 generations to to Ch. Malung Jim Beam through Southernbell Seen, sibling of our dam’s Southernbell Jack Nero Rushty with the distinctive signature of the selective outcrossing with South African quality Jack Russell strains seen in the sire’s maternal bloodline.

Our second Dam (Highveld Taita) ) is maternally linked within 4 generations to Ch. Malung Jim Beam through Southernbell Ferdinand Tally Wally with the distinctive signature of the selective outcrossing with South African quality Jack Russell strains seen in the sire’s maternal bloodline
Breeding with Highveld Peter, Charlmar Kaleysia and Highveld Taita will rationally result in the continuation of the line-breeding programme initiated years ago by Southernbell’s Gill Griffith on both the sire’s (Southernbell Sooty) and dam’s (Southernbell Seen or Southernbell Jack Nero Rushty) side, intensifying and preserving the ancestral and mutual traceability to Ch. Malung Jim Beam and Johnnie JR500 of Australia. The distinctive Charlmar outcross strain will also be a second instance of a line-bred programme, tracing back to both the sire’s and dam’s mutual maternal ancestors, namely through Charlmar Een-te-Veel , Petit Cuppuccino of Charlmar and Charlmar Tessa from South Africa, bred by Mariana Krugell

The Curious Question remains: Why do the Australian Jack Russell pedigrees stretch so far back (+/- 1960), and the South African Jack Russell pedigrees not (+/- 1990).

The Answer is: The Australians were the first country to create a Jack Russell Registry with the creation of the Australian Jack Russell Terriers Club ( JRTCA) in 1972, keeping a stud- and pedigree registry which were later transferred, after the recognition of the Jack Russell Breed official in in Australia in 1991, allowing the cross registering of these pedigrees on the ANKC's records.

In South Africa the South African Jack Russell Registry (SAJRR) were only founded in 1996, having the same pioneering function in South Africa as the Australian JRTCA had in Australia. These records are currently administered by Canine SA. Therefore accurate and officially traceable pedigrees in South Africa will only be on official record from the 1990's. These registry delays occurred all around the world, making the Australian Jack Russell Standard and pedigrees a valuable asset to all breeders establishing, preserving and improving their breeding programmes.

The breeding programmes founded in pedigrees are:

In-breeding - rational mating of father/daughter, or mother/son, or brother/sister, resulting in the enhancement and dominance of desirable and/or undesirable genes and traits from the same parents. The aim is stronger genes and traits.

Line-breeding - rational mating aiming to trace ancestry on both the sire and dam's side to one mutual ancestor, resulting in the enhancement and dominance of desirable and/or undesirable genes and traits from the pedigree line. The aim is a continuation of genes and traits.

Outcross-breeding - rational mating aiming to introduce an external sire and/or dam from different pedigrees into the current pedigree with no traceable mutual ancestry, resulting in the enhancement and dominance of desirable and/or undesirable genes and traits from various pedigree lines. The aim is the creation of a specific strain of genes and traits.

Cross-breeding - when different breeds of dogs are cross bred resulting in mutes. Thus a Jack Russell crossed with a different breed altogether.

The history of the Jack Russell over the past 200+ years (1800's) is the rational cross-breeding of what historians believe to be the now extinct English White Terrier (adapted to human care and cuddle, and the tell tale dog show appearance), the Smooth Fox Terrier (hunting instinct, speed and the tell tale smooth coat), Wired Fox Terrier (energy, intelligence and the tell tale wired coat) and later the introduction of what is believed to be the Bull Terrier (courageous and and prey-instinct, with the tell tale short legged, muscular compact body)

The Jack Russell is not a pure-bred dog (selective in-breeding) but the line-breeding of a specific strain (including outcross-breeding) deemed desirable for a specific purpose, and in the JR's case, as the ultimate fox-hunting and sheep working dog. From time to time rational instances of in-, line- and/or cross breeding is required to maintain this particular strain. Hence the distinct pedigree of the Jack Russell, whether it had been recognized by the pure-bred institution or not over the years.

The reputable pedigree registries started to recognize the ethical, responsible and selective breeding exercised in maintaining the Jack Russell strain, and here follows the various institutions around the world whom hence officially recognized the Jack Russell:

JRTCA = Jack Russel Terrier Club of America
FCI = Fédération Cynologique Internationale
UKC = United Kennel Club
KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain
NZKC = New Zealand Kennel Club
CET = Club Español de Terriers (Spanish Terrier Club)
ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club
IKC = Irish Kennel Club
CKC = Continental Kennel Club
NKC = National Kennel Club
APRI = American Pet Registry, Inc.
ACR = American Canine Registry
DRA = Dog Registry of America, Inc.
NAPR = North American Purebred Registry, Inc.
AKC = American Kennel Club
SAJRR = Southern African Jack Russell Registery
Canine SA = Alternative Registery of various dog breeds.

Breeding with Jack Russells is essentially the responsibility for maintaining the strain by means of ethical breeding practices and educating and informing prospective owners, breeders or the public in general of the history, continuation and preservation of the JR strain

The Location of MalaMala Kennels

White River (Afrikaans: Witrivier) is a small holiday and farming town situated just north of Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, South Africa. The farms in the region produce tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers and timber. After the Boer War the British demarcated land on the Emanzimhlope River, a tributary of the Crocodile River. Emanzimhlope is Swazi for White Waters. The land was used to demobilise British soldiers and the first manager of the settlement was Tom Lawrence (snr), after whom the longest street in the town is still named.

The farming tradition of the community that settled here after the Anglo-Boer War has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Lord Milner's (administrator of the defeated Transvaal) attache, the aforementioned Tom Lawrence, demarcated land on the 'Emanzimhlope' - a tributary of the Crocodile River whose name translates from the Swazi as 'White Waters' - to demobilised British Anglo-Boer War soldiers.

White River, with three irrigation dams and a number of nearby forest, is a popular holiday destination for those looking to visit the Crocodile River Valley, and the town has a reputation for its arts and crafts.

White River lies 20km north of Nelspruit not far from the border with Kruger National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Barberton Mountain Land, Barberton Greenstone Belt or Makhonjwa Mountains. White River has a population of 15,954 and is located in an area of considerable scenic beauty. The climate is said to be one of the best in South Africa, neither excessively hot in summer when rainfall is at its highest, nor overly cold during the sunny winters. The farms tend to be relatively small but the agriculture is intensive with tropical and citrus fruits in abundance, and vegetables and cut flowers readily available.
