The White River SPCA is a Non-Profit, Non-Governmental Organisation which receives no financial support from the South African Government. Municipal financial aid is provided in lieu of the services the SPCA renders on behalf of the Municipal Pound. All funds required for the SPCA's work to combat cruelty and educate the public come directly from YOU, the public. This is YOUR SPCA, please support

us so that we may serve you to the fullest. Of all of those Societies, only one is not still functioning today. The rest are fully operational Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It is exciting to realise, from these small beginnings that today, there are close to a hundred SPCAs. Each SPCA is a member of the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) and is fully autonomous, having its own Non Profit Organisation Number (NPO), operating in its own constitutional district and taking full responsibility for its own affairs. The Policy of the SPCA movement is the promotion of kindness. Or in other words, to achieve the goal of preventing cruelty to animals by changing attitudes in a positive way through education and pro active inspections. Cruelty can be prevented by investigating and inspecting cases or situations reported to us. This would include issuing warnings or prosecuting offenders in terms of the Animals Protection Act (71) of 1962. In many cases, the undoubted cruelty, neglect or suffering of an animal has not been the result of a deliberate action by the owner but the result of ignorance and / or lack of resources. Our role is not only to work with these people, to advise, educate and uplift them but also to work towards changing public opinion towards compassionate attitudes and responsible behaviour towards their animals. We are simply not referring to pets or domestic animals โ€“ but to all animals. - Adapted using information provided by the NSPCA (Alberton) www.nspca.co.za

๐Ÿšจ Breaking News - Officials are investigating one confirmed case of rabies and a second suspected case, in the Capri community on the Cape Peninsula. The dogs were from the same household, and, as a precautionary measure, were humanely euthanised at a private veterinary practice. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is in liaison with the State Vet and other authorities and weโ€™re standing by to offer our assistance via proactive vaccination of animals in the area and wherever else necessary to prevent the spread of this deadly disease and to ensure the safety and well-being of both animals and the community.

Rabies is a viral and highly fatal disease that is mostly transmitted from animals to humans. It is transmitted mainly via a bite from an already infected animal, but exposure may also occur through contamination of broken skin or mucous membranes with saliva from an infected animal.

Vaccination of pets is the most effective way of protecting humans and animals from exposure to this potentially deadly virus. Vaccination of dogs and cats against rabies is compulsory in South Africa in accordance with the Animal Diseases Act, Act 35 of 1984. All dogs and cats must receive their rabies vaccination at 3 months of age, usually in conjunction with or at the same time as the normal 5-in-1 vaccine. A follow up rabies vaccination is due within one year and thereafter every three years. Rabies prevention starts with pet owners. Please protect yourself, your pet and your community by getting your animals vaccinated.

Rabies vaccinations are provided to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA by the Department of Agriculture and are administered at no extra charge to the public. Please visit our onsite animal hospital in Grassy Park or any of our mobile clinics located within communities to make sure your petsโ€™ vaccinations are up to date. Meet Garnet, a spunky 4 year-old Welsh pony. Garnet was brought to the Horse Cape Unit as a stray. He was never claimed and after his pound period was up, he was immediately gelded. He is now ready for a new life.

Garnet is 10 hh and heโ€™s a friendly, outgoing guy. He loves attention and is confident around people.

He currently shares a paddock with a little pony mare.

This pretty boy will make a great companion or lead rein pony.

With the help of Nelspruit SPCA , Steve, our Kennel Manager, and Inspector Michelle Steyn, demonstrated their compassion and bravely today. Steve rescued a distressed bunny from a perilous pit. Their quick thinking and swift actions not only saved a life but also exemplified our commitment to animal welfare. Poo washed off and now he is clean and comfy. All animals' lives matter.
