Getting to the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy is where the adventure begins !

Our journey starts from our homebase in Livingstone with a 40 minute road transfer to a small African harbour called Mambova. Local villagers and fishermen trade their daily catch here and it is a kaleidoscope of colour, noise, children, goats and chickens! By this stage you are firmly off the tourist circuit and will be journeying into a beautiful remote part of Africa. From here, we continue our journey by River! This magical boat journey takes you upstream on Africa’s fourth largest river - the mighty Zambezi. After about two hours on the river, look out for Doug, our team and the horses, saddled and waiting on the riverbank. We ride into camp from here!

Africa, a land with vast savannas, dense forests, and rugged mountains, has long been the epitome of safari adventures. But beyond the well-trodden paths of famous reserves lies a whole new world less explored, brimming with untold stories and uncharted wilderness.

There’s just something about horseback exploration in the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy. It’s getting to areas inaccessible by vehicle. It’s the smell of wildlife being so close. It’s about getting to know your horse over days, your host Doug and fellow riders - friendships brewing for life over shared experiences, fireside chats, storytelling and sun. It’s the excitement of knowing how wild this place really is - the knowledge that you are hours away from other visitors or tourists is quite exhilarating. It’s simply magic.

Why ride with us?

It’s the rare opportunity of not seeing another person, vehicle or rider except for those in our party. It’s us alone to see, explore and experience. It’s the connection with nature. It’s the quiet contentment of travelling by horseback. It’s the laughter around the fire pit. It’s the camaraderie. It’s the indescribable magic of the Simalaha. 🍂

Did you know?

Male sable antelope grow horns up to 1,6 metres in length. To put 1,6 metres into perspective, it’s roughly the same length as an elephant tusk. And how tall are YOU by the way? 🧐🤯💥

Sable grow these horns over an entire lifetime. Each year they develop a new ring, so the sable’s horns can be used to determine age. Amazing nature!

There’s something about night time in Africa. It’s the cicadas singing, the warm air and the absolute darkness - soon home to starry scenes you probably drew on paper as a child - with more stars, constellations and galaxies that one could possibly count or imagine. Ethereal, unbelievable, absolute.

“Our days started with a five hour ride at dawn following breakfast, home in time for a cold beer, shower and lunch. The rides were just amazing... long canters in the plains - at one point we were cantering beside zebra.. Afternoons, I spent birding - spotting eagles, parrots and so many other species. In the evening we went just before sunset out on the horses to find a perfect spot for sundowners... and after watching a breath-taking sunset, we pointed the horses home in the moonlight.

After a fireside drink and supper (food was phenomenal... I could wax poetical on the food forever!) we headed back to our beautiful tent and snuggled down, exhausted from the day, with warm hot water bottles listening to the sounds of the bush.

I really cannot recommend this place more highly. Doug, Gail and Murray are the most warm and welcoming hosts. I cannot wait to go back!”

If you are invited into a villagers home here in the Simalaha, it would be a privileged insight into Lozi life.
Areas of our camp are beautifully handcrafted each season by members of the Simalaha community - designed and inspired by traditional Lozi mud-style methods which stay naturally cool and breathable.

Handcrafted, durable, sustainable. 🛖

Our camp is a place to kick your boots off and tuck into the delicious, healthy meals Chef Henry has whizzed up in the container kitchen. It’s our refuge in the heat of the day and a place to park off between rides. Chat with fellow riders, cool down in our eco pool or relax in your tent and spot wildlife grazing in their hundreds on the Simalaha horizon. One of our most favourite activities of all is what we call ‘The DNA’ here in Africa. The Do-Nothing Activity! Do you know it?

Do you know your giraffe?

has ascertained that there are four distinct species of giraffe, and several subspecies. The four distinct species are Masai giraffe (G. tippelskirchi), Northern giraffe (G. camelopardalis), Reticulated giraffe (G. reticulata) and Southern giraffe (G. giraffa). Our giraffe in the Simalaha Wildlife & Community Conservancy are, of course, Southern giraffe.

Here’s some interesting giraffe trivia for you this Sunday!

🦒 It is believed that both male (bulls) and female (cows) giraffe can live to about 25 years in the wild.
🦒 Adult male giraffe are sometime predated by lion, while sub-adults and calves are particularly vulnerable and can also be taken by hyena, leopard, wild dog and crocodile.
🦒 The main threat to giraffe populations is habitat degradation and loss, caused by an increasing human demand for agricultural land, pastoralism, and unsustainable timber and fuel-wood harvesting.
🦒 Giraffe horns are not actually called horns but ‘ossicones’ which are boney projections of the skull covered with furred skin. Both female and male giraffe have ossicles.
🦒 Giraffe use their 45-50 cm long prehensile tongue and the roof of their mouths in order to feed on a range of different plants and shoots, most notably from Senegalia and Vachellia (formerly Acacia) species.
🦒 Giraffe often rest while standing up, but new research shows that they lie down more often than previously thought. When lying down, they fold their legs under their body, but mostly keeping their necks held high.
🦒 Giraffe’s patches (spots) are first and foremost for camouflage. But underneath each patch lies a very sophisticated system of blood vessels. A giraffe can send blood through these small branches into the middle of the patch in order to release heat through this system. Each patch acts as a thermal window to release body heat!

Thanks to for the lesson! 🧡

Could THIS be the Faraway Tree? 🤩

This giant and magnificent tree is no other than the Baobab : Africa’s iconic “Tree of Life”

It is a prehistoric species which predates both mankind and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Native to the African savannah where the climate is extremely dry and arid, it is a symbol of life and positivity in a landscape where little else can thrive. Over time, the Baobab has adapted to its environment. It is a succulent, which means that during the rainy season it absorbs and stores water in its vast trunk, enabling it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season when all around is dry and arid. This is how it became known as “The Tree of Life” and it is at the heart of many traditional African remedies and folklore.

Baobab trees grow in 32 African countries. They can live for up to 5,000 years, reach up to 30 metres high and up to an enormous 50 metres in circumference. Magnificent nature!
