Ares* is a fast-maturing pre-packing variety suitable for spring, summer and autumn sowing. The dark green coloured heads are dome-shaped with a medium bead size. Ares* produces smooth heads that grow on small to medium plants. This variety matures very uniformly, making it easy to harvest. Very adaptable for production in all areas of South Africa. The uniformity of the beads makes it very attractive to the consumer.

Daytona is an early maturing All Sweet type F1 hybrid watermelon, with excellent yield potential. Fruit are uniform, short oblong in shape and weigh 10 - 12 kg. The medium-thick rind is tough, making it highly suitable for long distance shipping. Rind colour is dark green with thin lighter green stripes. Daytona’s flesh is bright red, firm, crispy, juicy and has an excellent taste and a high brix level of about 11 - 12 %. Daytona tends to resist sunburn and has high resistance to Anthracnose (Co).

Over the years, Conquistador has developed a remarkable track record of superb performance becoming the leading variety in Southern Africa. Conquistador is widely adapted and an easy to grow hybrid. Plants are large, vigorous and wrapper leaves cover the heads very well. Heads are uniform and very firm. Field holding ability after maturity and the ability to withstand cracking are excellent resulting in its use as an over wintering variety in many areas. Heads have a deep blue-green colour and an excellent flavour. Conquistador is widely used as both a bagging and hawker cabbage. It is a favourite with hawkers due to the large plant, wrapper leaves, head size, sweet taste and excellent shelf life. Conquistador has intermediate resistance to Fusarium yellows (Foc).

SPECIAL VARIETAL REQUIREMENTS
• Conquistador is able to tolerate both heat in summer and the cold throughout the winter months very well
• Highly suited to the cooler times of the year - should ideally mature into autumn and early winter in cool areas and through winter in frost-free areas
• Cold tolerance is excellent. However, heads should be mature before the first frost occurs

Sakata Seed Gemini F1 Hybrid Gem Squash

Gemini was the first gem squash type developed with a semi-bush habit. Gemini is a strong grower with an open plant structure and very high yield potential. The first fruit are harvestable as baby squashes at approximately 45 days after direct sowing. The fruit shape is oval to globe shaped at the baby stage and matures to a globe shape. The fruit stem colour is very dark green and is long enough to make harvesting quick and easy. The rind is smooth and mature fruit weigh 300 – 350 g. The rind colour of the baby is a very dark green with slightly lighter flecks. Fruit mature to very dark green with good holding ability, uniformity and shelf life. Gemini can be used as a baby squash in pre-packs and mature fruit on the fresh market.

• Plant spacing may be decreased to 30 – 45 cm in rows by 150 - 180 cm between rows to maximize yield potential, trial under specific conditions

Sakata Seed Scarlet Red Leaf Lettuce
Scarlet is a red Batavia type lettuce. An advantage of this variety is that it will keep its dark red colour in all growing seasons. Scarlet is very slow to bolt and keeps well on the field. Plants are vigorous and produce large leaves. This variety is adaptable and can be planted in all production areas, even for year round production in mild climatic conditions. Scarlet takes 50 to 60 days to mature after transplanting seedlings.

SAKATA SEED Optima F1 Hybrid Cabbage
Optima is the new summer variety from Sakata that’s in the same class as Tenacity. Optima is mainly for areas with high Black rot pressure. Due to Optima’s resistance against Black rot, this variety performs very well in areas where it is a problem. It’s a strong plant that takes 80-95 days to mature form transplants. The big frame protects the heads very well against sunburn and wind damage. Heads are semi round to round with a good head weight. Optima’s frame has an upright growth habit, so water doesn’t accumulate in the bottom part of the plant.

SPECIAL VARIETAL REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent results are consistently achieved for harvest through the warm season
• Mature heads can tolerate cool and frost conditions well
• Avoid early and late sowing in cooler areas and growing through winter in cold areas as bolting may occur

F1 Hybrid Butternut Squash
Barbara is an exciting tropical butternut variety. Plants are widely adapted and yield potential is high. The fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing period. It has been observed that the plants’ strong vigour tends to make it less susceptible to diseases. Due to Barbara’s attractive rind colour and its ability to firm up at a very early stage, immature fruit can be used as a baby vegetable. The first fruits are harvestable as baby squashes at 45 days after transplant. Barbara may be used for mature fruit production due to exceptional quality and can be harvested around 85 - 95 days from transplant. Mature fruit weigh around 1 000 – 1 500 g. The rind colour of the immature (baby) fruit is a dark green with lighter green stripes and when mature have a medium dark green colour with tan coloured thinner stripes running from the stem base through to the blossom end.

SAKATA SEED Daytona F1 Hybrid Watermelon
Daytona is an early maturing All Sweet type F1 hybrid watermelon, with excellent yield potential. Fruit are uniform, short oblong in shape and weigh 10 - 12 kg. The medium-thick rind is tough, making it highly suitable for long distance shipping. Rind colour is dark green with thin lighter green stripes. Daytona’s flesh is bright red, firm, crispy, juicy and has an excellent taste and a high brix level of about 11 - 12 %. Daytona tends to resist sunburn and has high resistance to Anthracnose (Co).

Citrine is a dark green to bright yellow, early maturing blocky type sweet pepper with a high yield potential. Citrine has a very high percentage large first grade fruit when grown under moderate temperatures. Fruit are uniform and have thick fruit walls. Plants are medium compact and have short internodes. Citrine has a high resistance to Pepper mild mottle race 1 and 2 (PMMoV1.2). Mature green fruit are dark green which makes it perfect for high quality green picking especially in the open field. Citrine has an excellent yield potential for a yellow variety.

SPECIAL VARIETAL REQUIREMENTS

• Although Citrine has a medium compact plant, trellising in the open field is suggested as fruit quality and yield can be improved significantly
• The best quality fruit is formed under moderate temperature conditions and good ventilation
• Yellow peppers require more iron (Fe) than red ones, especially in winter

Sampson is a medium-sized grey-skinned type pumpkin with an indeterminate growth habit. Sampson is a strong, vigorous grower with an intermediate virus resistance package against Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV). Fruit size averages between 4 – 7 kg and the fruit are thick fleshed with a small seed cavity. Fruit are uniform in shape and size, slightly ribbed with a concave top, heavy shoulders and small blossom end. Sampson can be planted in summer and winter growing regions. The storage ability of Sampson is excellent, with the ability to be stored for up to 6 months and longer under normal storage conditions. Due to the long shelf life and firm, thick flesh, Sampson is also suitable for processing.
