...this goat had a problem that would have been easily prevented.
But at this stage, it was not possible to cure it.

Brief Notes on GOATS AND SHEEP - VACCINATION AND DE-WORMING.

GOAT and SHEEP VACCINATIONS
Vaccination:

Simply put, vaccination means: “to give an altered disease-causing organism/”germ” a component of it, or what is produced by it to and animal….

…Even more simply: Vaccination is to introduce to an animal, something safe - for the animal, that would make the animal build up protection against a specific likely disease.
VACCINES are not MEDICINES in the strict sense.
The vaccines we recommend for sheep and goats are all given by injection.
The vaccine results in the animal preparing its immune defenses for when a specific disease comes.

MOST VACCINES NEED TO BE GIVEN TWICE FOR IMMUNE LEVELS TO RISE TO DESIRED PROTECTION LEVEL.

Deciding what to vaccinate against:

The vaccine program we recommend s to our clients is based on 3 major considerations.
1) Risk of disease in the herd/flock in that area – or based on systems of management implemented (eg: for Butulism Vaccination).
Normally, we would have seen the disease on one of the farms we attend to; of found signs of it on post mortem examination.

2) If there is risk of a disease that is not curable, difficult to cure/treat, or impossible to treat due to sudden death. Or the signs of that disease are not easy to see on animal.
3) The cost: The lose due to disease is expected to be or usually is high.
Or, for treatable diseases, vaccine cost is cheaper than the cost of treatment.

With the notes above in mind – PLEASE take another look at THE VACCINES INCLUDED ON OUR Sheep and Goat VACCINE PROGRAM in PIC uploaded:

To follow the program well, requires that the flock be correctly managed.
The animal groupings need to be planned – starting with a chosen time to breed the animals.
We can help you with structuring this program to suit your current disease and herd dynamics.
We can advice modification up – until routine is established in a structured herd.

A SMALL EXPLANATION ON 2 OF THE VACCINE PRODUCTS IN PROGRAM:
1) The MultivaxP® is a combination Vaccine that prevents the horrible sounding Cough in adult and young stock (both Sheep and Goats) – the cough is more commonly heard in Goats, diarrhea in young and adult stock – The Diarrhea is more commonly seen in lambs – among other diseases.
2) Ovilis Enzoovax® is a vaccine that protects the Goats and Sheep against a disease at causes abortions in Sheep mainly; but can cause abortions in Goats and people as well - (Chlamydia infections).
…Please ask us for explanation or clarification.

DIPPING, DEWORMING and NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT are important all the time, throughout the year. Specific timing and frequency should be determined based on your routine herd health assessments.
Just to emphasis; See that de-woprming has as been included on program. Worms can cause loss of weight and death due to lack of blood. a good de-worming schedule and strategy is very important.

SOME OF OUR UNIQUE PRODUCTS FOR SHEEP AND GOATS:

A) OVITHRIVE®:
Mineral supplements are very helpful to maintain general healthy all year round, and to enhance ovulation.
Providing or we thrive as soon as shown significant improvement in body condition during the dry season and also in conception rates.

B) MOLASES POWDER®:
Encourage intake of the dry grass by spraying the preserved or standing hay with molasses.
Its de-hydrated molasses, easy to transport and can be mixed with water to turn it back into liquid or added as a powder to livestock feed supplement so animals may eat required quantity of feed.

C) MINERAL BLOCKS®:
These lick blocks provide maintenance requirements of minerals for ruminants.

NOTE:
Goats in particular, in Zambian farms, are disadvantaged by cultural and traditional mis-conceptions that “goats do not get sick”…
…and “The Village goat did not need Vaccination – and did not NEED feed supplements.”

But the economic value of a village goat was/is also almost equivalent to 4 chickens.

WE MUST CONSIDER THAT THE PURPOSE FOR THE GOATS CHANGES THE MOMENT WE WANT TO MAKE MONEY OUT OF THEM. THE MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO ALSO CHANGE IN ORDER FOR THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT TO BE REALIZED IN TIME.

You can only ACHIEVE BETTER OUTCOME BY IMPROVING WHAT YOU PUT IN - better investment on necessary interventions – calculated gain.

Speak to your Veterinary Doctor regarding the Vaccines they can help you get for your herd and flock on in your area.
