Shared from Harare SPCA site - very important information re vaccinations and health care for our pups 🐶

We get a lot of enquiries about when puppies and adult dogs should be vaccinated.
PARVO VIRUS is deadly if not treated quickly. Our hospital Parvo ward is bursting at the seams with very sickly puppies. Twice in the last week, 2 pups of 6 months of age have been admitted too. One didn't make it.
By vaccinating your puppies at the right time and keeping them away from other dogs till they are fully vaccinated will keep them safe.

July is traditionally our coldest month here in Zim and I hear there is a cold spell coming in...affecting not just us humans but our pets as well.
PLEASE make sure that your kennels are well insulated - lined with old rugs/carpet pieces, LOTS of blankets to snuggle into and are placed under a roof and out of the wind. Perhaps move them into a garage or shed for the winter season.
And a bit more food in your pets diet over this time will help give them more energy to keep warm!
Best scenario would be to move the dogs into the house so they can be as warm and cozy as we are!
Our loyal and loving dogs deserve our best attention and care 🐾🐾

Couple of photos of our very busy show weekend with visiting South Africa judge Claire Paterson-Abrolat.

We had competition events in Agility, Dog Jumping and Obedience.
AND... Claire also gave a very interesting and informative talk/demonstration on RALLY - which seems like a very fun way to work with your 4-legged best friend and which we hope to be adding to the club's training program soon.

Congratulations to all the winners, huge thanks to Claire for being with us and to the club committee & members for their hard work in putting it all together. And extra special thanks to Mrs Sally Denis and Salden for the donation of Montego products for prizes.

Recently our members took part in behavioural and agility workshops given by two top visiting South African trainers. During the behavioural workshops, our members were taught about the Canine Ladder of Aggression.

The ladder of aggression is an illustrated summary of the gestures your dog may use when they are feeling stressed or threatened. The gestures are designed to avert threat and so to avoid escalation towards aggression.

The gestures shown on the lower rungs of the ladder, such as yawning, putting their ears back and raising a paw, mean “I’m feeling worried – don’t threaten me – please calm down”.

Those on the higher rungs of the ladder, such as growling, snapping and biting mean “Stop! Leave me alone right now!” Understanding the meaning of these gestures and encouraging your family members to be more aware of them, will help avoid the last resort of aggression.

HOW TO APPROACH A STRANGE DOG

How to approach a dog should be a skill known to all. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that many dogs don’t like being touched by strangers. Just like people, you never know if you might startle them or catch them on a day they are feeling grumpy or sick. Like us humans, dogs value their personal space. Dog bites are easily preventable if you take the time to understand their line of thinking when approached by strangers.

DOS
DO ALWAYS ask the owner’s permission.
DO Be calm and gentle.
DO Avoid direct eye contact (sustained eye contact signals trustworthiness in the human world, but in the dog world, it signals aggression).
DO Keep a comfortable distance and respect the dog’s space.
DO Let the dog approach you first and let the dog sniff you before petting. Avoid reaching out to make them smell your hand. Sudden movements are threatening to dogs.
DO Assume a non-threatening posture by keeping your side or back toward the dog. Crouch down and avoid hovering over the dog, however if you are in any way uncertain about the dog, stay standing.
DO Stop when and if the dog is done with the interaction. The meeting needs to go on their own terms, especially if they are a fearful dog.

DON’T
DON’T Assume it is OK to pet any dog you don’t know.
DON’T Reach your hand over the dog’s head. Instead use an upward palm to gently scratch under the chin of the dog. Reaching over the top of the head is a threatening move.
DON’T Invade their space or use heavy eye contact.
DON’T Insist on petting a dog after an owner asks you not to.
DON’T Be impatient. This has to happen on the dog’s terms.
DON’T Pet a dog without asking ……. ever!

TIPS FOR CHILDREN
Parents, do not let your children run up to strange dogs. A frightened dog in this situation could seriously hurt a child, then get blamed for it and labelled as an “aggressive dog” for acting on instinct. Even worse the dog could get put down. Teach children the BE A TREE technique – stand still with their arms tucked into their sides and their hands folded in front of them whilst they look
down. This is the safest posture for children around a loose dog because they aren’t doing anything to threaten or spook the dog like making eye contact or triggering the dog’s chase response.
If you or your child falls or are knocked to the ground by a dog, curl into a ball and cover your face and neck with your hands.

In general, when you greet a dog, remember to watch their body language and respect the dog’s signals.
