Its that time again and a good time to change your bedding in the coop before the rain starts. Lime sand is great for keeping smells and mites at bay. The girls (and boys) will love having dust baths in it.

With the wet weather on its way....again....now it the time to pay attention to your chicken coop. We like to use Lime Sand in our chicken coop. It stops the ground from turning into a sludge mess and neutralises those odours!

“Lime Sand is ground limestone known as calcium carbonate and is safe for chickens, animals, and the environment. It is commonly used in coops and barns to destroy odors. Lime Sand stops the growth of pathogens with its high pH level and deters insects.

We all know this has just happened today but it is also very real.

Please everyone keep and eye on your birds and if you see anything that looks off, isolate and chat to a professional.

I didn't write this but it has some valid points and its not just about the influenza. Good biosecurity and keeping your fluffy breakfast laying pets safe from wild animals is a good starting point.

Please don't wait till its too late. I am very hopeful that this gets controlled very rapidly and it doesn't get to WA.
However, If you were thinking about getting a chicken tractor or coop to keep your girls contained in the case of an emergency. Get intouch with us and let us help you with your chicken needs.

Thanks

It's Moulting Week‼️ Let's learn all about chicken's and moulting.

Ah, the moulting season – a time of transformation for our feathered friends! Have you ever noticed your chickens starting to look a bit, well, unkempt? Perhaps you've found more feathers in the coop than usual. This isn't a sign of neglect but a natural process known as moulting.

✅ What Is Moulting?
Moulting is when chickens shed old feathers to make way for new growth. This isn't merely a cosmetic overhaul; it's a crucial process for their overall health and well-being. Imagine wearing the same outfit every day, for every occasion – it would get pretty worn out, right? Similarly, feathers lose their efficacy over time, necessitating this periodic refresh.

✅ Why Do Chickens Moult?

- Health and Feather Quality: Over time, feathers become damaged and lose their insulating and waterproofing abilities. Moulting allows chickens to renew their feather coat, ensuring they're well-equipped to regulate their temperature and stay dry.

- Reproductive Cycle: There's an interesting link between moulting and a chicken's reproductive cycle. Moulting often leads to a temporary halt in egg production, giving the hen's body a much-needed break. This rest period is essential for maintaining their health and future egg-laying capacity.

- Seasonal Changes: Typically, moulting aligns with the change in seasons, occurring once a year as the days shorten in autumn. This timing ensures the chicken will have a fresh coat of feathers ready for the colder months, crucial for warmth and protection.
