Taken from another post but was too good not to share:

❤️food for thought....All three of these dogs look like a doodle...right? A non-shedding, intelligent, trainable pet that looks like a teddy bear & without the “fancy poodle” look. Guess what my friends... these 3 dogs are poodles ... purebred, standard poodles with a teddy bear cut.

🧠Intelligence=poodle
🧹Non Shedding = poodle
🎓Easy to train = poodle
🐻Teddy bear Cut = Groomer

🛑People spend 2.5x (plus) the price of a purebred poodle, for a mixed breed dog that comes with no papers, typically no genetic testing & zero knowledge of the genetic history and pedigree. Please realize that doodles are popping up in rescues in crazy amounts due to unforeseen behaviors and physical traits that the breeders had no idea of knowing.... ie: shedding. It’s rare that you will find a well bred poodle in a shelter... why? Because reputable breeders take their puppies back if you can’t keep them.

⭐️Wally Conran was the first to breed a doodle and to quote his thoughts "I opened a Pandora's box, that's what I did. I released a Frankenstein. So many people are just breeding for the money. So many of these dogs have physical problems, and a lot of them are just crazy.”

💰Just because someone stuck a high price tag on the product, doesn’t mean the product is worth the price.

Buyers also don’t realize the slim chance that the puppy will not shed, or may not get the good behavior/intelligence of a standard. Wally Conran tested a litter of 10 doodles, 3 were non shedding.

Goldendoodles are a cross between a golden and a poodle. How can ANYONE guarantee non shedding when golden’s shed? Even if it’s 5th generation doodle, how can you guarantee non shedding unless genetic testing is done to guarantee that the golden gene didn’t make its way down through the gene pool? They can’t!!!

Poodles come in MANY different colors too! And yes you can get a cream/Appricot/red poodle that is the same color as a golden.

⚠️ Surgery Photo ⚠️
This is what a PYOMETRA looks like - it is when the uterus is infected and filled with pus. It is common in non-desexed females and is potentially life threatening. The side of the right is filled with pus, whereas the left side is much closer to a normal sized uterine horn.
Symptoms:
• Not eating
• Lethargy
• Drinking / Urinating more
• Vomiting
• A purulent discharge from the v***a

If you don’t plan on breeding, we HIGHLY recommend desexing your female pets. No age is too old! ✅🐶

🙏🏽 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗘!

👉🏽 Have you ever experienced a dog that begs for this?

🐕 That one at the park, usually a working type breed, that just does not stop and despite practically gasping for air, will continue to bring that toy back to you for just ONE MORE throw.
The kind of dog that loses complete sense of the world around them when that ball or toy is in sight, almost like a trance.

🧸I used to have a dog that was like this; Yogi a Border Collie cross that will literally KILL herself before she will stop. Full confession, before I became a dog trainer, I thought this was great. It only took 15 minutes of serious ball thrower throwing before Yogi was absolutely smashed. She was the ‘easiest’ dog to physically exhaust. I used to think, “Oh if she was really that tired, she will just stop”. I couldn’t have been more inaccurate in my thinking.

🤤 What I didn’t realise is that Yogi had actually become obsessed with the act of throwing that tennis ball, at any opportunity she would bring me a toy and ball and stare at it until I threw it, sometimes she would be waiting hours. This obsession grew more intense over time until I realised the physical impacts that repetitive ball throwing had on her.

👉🏽Today I have V***n, also a Border Collie, obsessed with tug of war. Whilst I am more educated on repeated ball throwing, V***n is obsessed with toys and initiating play. Because she loves it so much, she is often reinforced for the obsessive behaviour with little to no boundaries or parameters enforced by the people she engages with. Something we are now working on.

☝🏽Here are some things I’ve learnt along the way.

📌 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗪𝗢𝗡'𝗧 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽

From training working breeds to owning two of them, let me tell you, they don’t and won’t stop, even if their body is failing them. I’ve watched a dog strain or tear a cruciate ligament and still chase a ball at the dog park. The owner was absolutely baffled that the dog was capable of continuing to run around. The truth is, that these dogs will work through pain and not give off any indication that they are physically exhausted and possibly injured.

📌 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲

Just like adrenaline junkies become addicted to the adrenaline dump when they are doing an intense or risky activity, dogs can become addicted to the high adrenaline state they are in when they constantly chase that ball. It is important to recognise when your dog is becoming a “one more time” dog and ensure you break the behaviour chain by stopping the behaviour or doing something else. If your dog is bringing you toys and staring at you for hours on end, it may be an indication they there is an obsession looming.

📌 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄

Overstimulation + Addiction + Fatigue = Injuries. Most dogs don’t have body awareness on a good day, this is something we have to teach them, let alone when they become fatigued. The MSD Veterinary Manuel describes fatigue:
“Fatigue is a normal consequence of exercise that is continued at high intensity or for prolonged periods of time. It describes the inability of muscles to continue to perform at the same level of intensity” (1).

At the point of fatigue, a dog’s muscles are unable to perform at the same level required to support the body, which means that once fatigue sets in, the dog is placing their body at injury risk should they continue to perform high intensity activities. This coupled with addiction and overstimulation to ball throwing is a muscle strain time bomb waiting to go off.

📌 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵

I get it, this is literally your dog’s favourite thing in the whole wide world to do and you couldn’t fathom not playing again. If you have read this and thought, my dog is a total crack addict, there are some things you can do to make the game more fun, relationship building and of course safer.

📌 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗜𝗦𝗛 𝗰𝘂𝗲

This was a massive game changer for me with Yogi and although I got slack with enforcing it for V***n, it is definitely going to be enforced moving forward.

By having a start and finish cue it allowed Yogi to understand that the game wasn’t always on. She had a clear parameter for when we were going to play with her and this helped her relax outside of that window. From bringing me toys constantly to relaxing on the couch, I noticed that she became a much more relaxed dog. This doesn’t happen overnight and is certainly something you have to do continuously to form new habits. If Yogi brought me a toy outside of that play window, I would ignore her and give her an incompatible behaviour such as being on a bed.

📌 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆

Our dogs just don’t automatically know how to use their body; they totally suck at it and you have to teach them how their rear ends work. Getting your dog used to walking over unstable surfaces or a bunch of pool noodles on the ground are super easy ways to teach them when to place their limbs. Checking out online conditioning courses such as the Do More With Your Dog Course (2) is also a great way to start teaching your dog how to use their body. You will learn how to warm your dog up, stretch them and build muscles to support their crazy addict life.

📌 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽

Don’t let your dog run until they are on the ground gasping for air, stop well and truly before that. You should be looking for any signs of fatigue; panting, slower returns.

📌 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝘂𝗴

The thing I didn’t realise about ball throwing is that your dog just uses you (RUDDDDEEEE). You aren’t actually part of the game but just a slave ball thrower. What I like about tug of war is that the game is between me and my dog and because of this our relationship grows! Having a good play game is something I am always trying to improve with my dogs because it becomes a useful training reward system and a great biological outlet. Although be careful not to create a ‘V***n’ by not having clear windows of opportunity. Tug of war, when played in a safe way takes away that repetitive impact that fetch has on the joints.

❌ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲

Having a ball around all the time creates a sense of tunnel vision where the dog zones out on the world around them. Not only is this not safe but it doesn’t teach your dog how to cope with the world. When you go out, don’t take that specific toy, take some food to reward your dog and just observe how comfortable your dog is with the world around them. You can always use toy reinforcers but consider if you dog is tunnel visioning on it.

👉🏽 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲

I could stand in front of you as your trainer, vet, expert or whatever professional and say repetitive ball throwing to the point of exhaustion is not great, but the reality is that you’ll probably still do it, because your dog loves it. That’s okay, but if you are going to play with a crack addict dog learn how to keep them safe. Your wallet health, and their body and mind depends on it.

Steelyblue Isis Violet AKA Bailey (Bum)

Born 16 November 2010
Gotcha Day 16 February 2011
Passed away 7 August 2023

In late 2010, after a few months family discussion and research, we decided that a Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be the 'right' type of dog for us as a family. We then accepted that we might have to travel, possibly Australia-wide, to find the girl for us.

But then we found out that there was a breeder with a nicely bred litter on the ground, less than 3kms away!

So, on the 16th of February 2011 we pick our Bailey up to be our forever girl.

This was the beginning of our almost 13 years together.

I think it was Josh who suggested 'Bailey' for your name - from a character from the Disney television show 'Suite Life on Deck', and it was settled.

In early 2012 we decided that we should become registered breeders and have puppies with Indy (our sister-in-law's dog). Our kennel 'Indigo Aurora' was conceived and you became the foundation bitch.

You gave us so much joy - doing laps through the kitchen and lounge chasing one of the boys was hilarious fun. And...3 beautiful and flawless litters of puppies who have, in turn, gone on to enrich their families lives.

You loved the car and the boat, walks and just being with us. Your quiet presence was always there through the tough times. If you were allowed to sit with us you had to have your head on one of our knees. We needed you and you taught us so much. You were an unofficial 'Service Dog' for us, before it became fashionable.

We arrived home after two weeks away knowing that you were not in a good way. You gave us the wonderful gift of waiting for us and a beautiful last day in the sun. We all knew then, that your time had come...and then you passed away gently on our way to the Barefoot Vet.

We all loved you Bailey Bum, Chris and I more than our kids!

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗔𝗚?

Ingredients on an ingredient panel are listed in weight order (before cooking) so if we look at the first 6 ingredients, we're going to see the predominant ingredients, the first 3 are really going to show you where it's at though.

👉 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹
This is a dried powder that has already been rendered before it foes and gets cooked in the kibble again. It's often just chicken carcass but you can ask your manufacturer what their chicken meal actually is...although good luck with that, I've never had much luck getting manufacturers to tell me the details.

Now, just because this is the #1 ingredient does NOT mean this formula is mostly chicken meal, no sir! All the other ingredients added together are more than this ingredient. A lot of dry foods are only around 25% animal-based....yep...pet parents commonly feed mostly vegetarian-based kibbles to their dogs without knowing...awks!

The protein % (which can come from animal and plant) is 25% which tells you there isn't much meat in this formula.

👉 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗲
Rice's inclusion in kibble is why people think they should just cook chicken and rice for their dogs 😩 Rice is not a species-appropriate ingredient for a dog...the occasional left over, sure but not when it makes up a large part of a dog's diet....oh sad :(

🚩A 2020 study called "Hair arsenic level in rice-based diet-fed Staffordshire bull terriers" they concluded that "The results suggest that eating a rice-based diet for long periods of time represents a risk for chronic iAs exposure in dogs."

👉 𝗦𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗵𝘂𝗺
This cheat ingredient can increase the protein level making you think that the protein is coming from animal ingredients BUT compared to rice, it's much more nutritious, has low GI, and just round a nicer ingredient.

👉 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿
Have you heard of ingredient splitting before? As advised for the Pet Food Advisor website, It is the creative practice of dividing a more abundant (inferior) ingredient into smaller portions of similar items. Let me break this down further...If we added the White Rice together with the Rice Flour it may actually become the number 1 ingredient and consumers wouldn't be too stoked about that so they change the format a wee bit and split it up. Rice flour is nothing but fine powder you get from grinding raw rice....cheeky cheeky.

👉 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝘁
A quality fat source.

👉 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗹𝗽
Dog food company Lyka discuss this in detail on the below link, however in short "Beet pulp is a cheap by-product of sugar beets that’s commonly used in dry dog food and is associated with hidden danger to pups – in particular, it’s linked with low levels of the essential amino acid, taurine"

Read more about this ingredient here:
https://journal.lyka.com.au/why-dont-we-use-beet-pulp-in-lyka-dog-food/

⚠️ If you're going to feed this dry food, my recommendation is to reduce it by 20% and add real food that is species-appropriate, you can read more about that here:

Whilst we don’t show, our dogs are subjected to all the same rigorous genetic and health testing as show quality demands.
Indigo Aurora adheres to all the Responsible Breeding code of Ethics as set out by the Australian Kennel Council to ensure the best health for all of our animals.

This is one of the most pervasive sentiments that puppy buyers, especially families, express when they’re looking for a dog. What they really mean, of course, is that they don’t want a show BREEDER – don’t want to pay the high price they think show breeders charge, don’t want to go through...

Interesting and informative reading

Where do you find these dogs? Flea markets; swap meets; newspaper ads; generic sites on the Web that list a bunch of breeders on the same page. They’re the guy at your office that let his girl dog get pregnant for the heck of it. They’re the friend of a friend who bred her unregistered mini Auss...
