⚠ SERIOUS NEW DOG DISEASE IN QUEENSLAND ⚠

The tick-borne dog disease ehrlichiosis (err-lick-ee-o-sis) has been recently confirmed in a Queensland dog. It is reported that this dog had not travelled outside of Queensland, meaning the disease has likely found its way into our local tick population.

Erlichiosis can make dogs very sick – and without treatment can kill them.

Dogs that are sick with this disease get a fever, look very tired, do not want to eat and lose weight. Their eyes can also go blue and mucky, and they can get nose bleeds. It is important you use anti tick products on your dogs to stop the ticks from biting them and spreading the disease.

If your dog is sick, make sure you take it to a vet.

Dog owners should have their dogs on regular tick products, always check their dogs for ticks, and look for signs of the disease. Talk to your vet about the best tick products to use.

If you think your dog has ehrlichiosis – speak to your vet, community Animal Management or Environmental Health Worker straight away.

You can also call us on 13 25 23 or get more info from our partners at AMRRIC - Animal Management in Rural & Remote Indigenous Communities

🐶 WHY OFF LEASH DOGS ARE NOT COOL 🐺

Before you unleash Fido and let him run free in a public place, take a moment to think about the consequences it could have on fellow dog owners walking their dog, the community who are out and about, and your own dog.

There’s no denying that letting our dogs run free and just be dogs puts big smiles on their happy faces. But there is a time and a place for dogs running riot and we must consider how our actions will impact others in the community. There are a million and one scenarios where things can go horribly wrong if you let your dog off leash in a public place. Both at the time of the event and the long-lasting effects that can follow. Here are just a few examples that we are sure many dog owners are sadly all too familiar with.

🐾The scared dog 🐩
We have all heard “It’s OK he’s friendly” while off leash Fido is running at us at a hundred miles an hour. Even if you think that your dog is friendly and just wants to play, it is never OK to allow them to run at another dog when in a public place. This can cause extreme fear and anxiety for many dogs and their owners. A dog who feels threatened can very quickly become reactive and the daily walk can become a nightmare. Not only has Fido now wrecked the daily walk of a responsible dog owner, but this scary event for the dog will potentially have a long-lasting effect on dog and owner. The dog is now scared of other dogs and could potentially become dog reactive. The dog has now lost all confidence outside of the home and no longer enjoys daily walks, and all previous training has gone out the window. The owner feels the same as the dog and feels nervous on daily walks, making the dog even more uncomfortable. All these consequences that Fido’s owner has no idea about, all because Fido was let off leash in a public place. Not cool Fido! ☹️

🐾The reactive dog 🐕
Not all dogs have had the opportunity for a paw-fect start in life. There are many dogs in our community who are rescue dogs and may not have had the privilege of adequate socialisation and training in their formative years. There are also many dogs who have had negative experiences such as being attacked by another dog resulting in extreme fear, and the resulting reactivity. The good news is that with the right techniques and professional training these issues can be managed and worked on, but they can take time, perseverance and owner dedication. Just imagine the horrific ramifications for this dog and their owner who have worked so hard to modify reactive / fearful behaviour and build their dogs confidence, to have it all destroyed by one off leash “friendly” Fido. All that hard work wrecked, back to square one yet again, dogs fear now even worse than before, owner now a total wreck. Good one Fido! 😩

🐾 People and dogs 👧
Not everyone in the community is a dog lover and may feel nervous about dogs running loose in public places. Some people may have had a frightening experience with a dog or may be just generally uncomfortable with dogs due to a lack of experience with them. As responsible dog owners we should never inflict our dogs on any person or animal. People and pets should be able to relax and enjoy public places without having to worry about off leash dogs. Let’s think about the ramifications for Nanna out for her daily walk when off leash Fido runs up and bowls her over. Nanna could now potentially have serious injuries impacting the rest of her life. What about young Daisy who is playing at the park and has never been around dog’s? Then here comes off leash Fido running like a cannon ball in excitement. Daisy in a panic begins screaming and running to safety, Fido thinks it’s a game, chases her before knocking her to the ground face first. Not only is Daisy now injured, but completely petrified of dogs for many years to come. Bad paw-rent is Fido’s owner! 😡

We all know that it is a finable offence under the NSW Companion Animals Legislation to have our dogs off lead in public places and not under effective control. We all know that there are plenty of designated off leash areas within the Sutherland Shire where Fido can run free and rumble with his mates (which can be found on Council’s website: https://www.sutherlandshire.nsw.gov.au/dogsinpublic ). As dog owners and community members, we dream of a perfect world where we could responsibly walk our dogs on leash and enjoy a day in nature without having to worry about a Fido and his naughty antics. But just like all dogs, it’s the responsibility of Fido’s owner to do the right thing and consider the other people and pets in the community. The lesson here…Before you unclip that leash in a public place or allow your dog to free range uncontained at the front of your property, take a moment to think about the consequences of doing the wrong thing. Keep your dog cool and keep it on a leash. 😎

To report an off-leash dog in a public place please call Sutherland Shire Council Customer Service on 9710 0333.

With rain and heat these little buggers come out to play. Alot of people dont realise these ticks are fatal to your pets it takes antivenom to save their life.
Please keep up to date with the proper repellents, even your cat can be covered now so if your not sure ring your vet and ask what would work for you. Stay safe this Christmas🐱🐶❤

Ticks are very small, but if they latch on to you, symptoms can range from mild itching and swelling to potentially life threatening anaphylactic shock.

If you have an allergic reaction to a tick bite, do not remove and call 000 immediately. If you don't have an allergic reaction, remove the tick as soon as possible. First, kill the tick by applying an ether-containing spray (e.g. Wart off spray) or permethrin cream (Lyclear cream). Wait 10 minutes for the tick to die, then carefully brush it off. Once removed, follow general first aid for bites and stings.
