Happy hump day!! 🐾 Fun Fact time🐶 Balance and stability exercise is so important to many aspects of the health of humans AND dogs. It helps with puppy development skills and also may help senior dogs that have lost strength and stability due to age related weakness. Goals of these activities are to improve proprioceptive feedback (body awareness), to encourage weight shift and muscle contraction, helping to make balance and function easier. Fergus was worried by our swings last week due to them being unstable under him and having movement he was unable to control. This week his balance and coordination was much better and he was up and down off them with little to no hesitation at all. Teaching our dogs to sit (or other positions) with the use of a lure. Quick and brief but gives you the right idea. Use something of high value to the dog (treat or toy). Holding this lure close to their nose slowly raise it up over their head keeping it close. The idea is their head will follow and their butt will hit the ground. This may happen first go or it may take time... be patient. As soon as their butt hits the ground give them a marker (I like to use the word ‘yes’ with a thumbs up for visual) and reward them with their treat or toy. Add the command ‘sit’ as you lure them into position. Practice, make it fun, start somewhere quiet with minimal distraction and keep sessions short so they don’t get bored. Mental stimulation and brain draining. This is very important and should be included in a daily routine for your fur babies. A simple yet effective way to offer this is by removing food bowls and feeding through the use of enrichment or puzzle feeders. You can have fancy options from the shops or utilise items such as egg cartons, plastic milk bottles (plastic ring removed) and cardboard boxes. Use your imagination!
