Welcome to spotlight Sunday, this week we will be looking at pyrrhura conures.
Pyrrhura conures are the smallest members of the conure family and there are s several different species.
The most common by far is the green cheek conure which comes in several colour mutations.
In addition to the green cheek, other commonly kept pyrrhura conures include crimson bellied, pearly, rose crown, blue throat and maroon bellied conures.
One thing all these species have in common is that they are relatively low noise in comparison to larger conures.
Although they may be quieter though, doesn't mean they are easier. In fact, they can be more difficult to manage in some ways. Many owners underestimate the personality of these birds thinking they will always be sweet and cuddly, when in reality they can go through hormonal phases where biting and moodiness increase. These phases can be lessened through diet modification, adjusting sleep time, providing extra enrichment and training.
They can definitely make excellent pets but understanding and patience must be there as these birds are often rehomed for being "aggressive"

Hi everyone, I'm putting a call out to see if anyone can help me get in touch with any wildlife protection organization's in India?
I recently joined an Alexandrine and ringneck parrot group on Facebook called "Alexandrine & Ringneck parrots group worldwide"
There are 25k members in this group. I assumed it would be like most other groups where people share cute photos of their pets and ask for advice. I have been horrified by the fact that people are posting images of distressed birds in cramped cages, sometimes a whole group of illegally wild caught chicks crammed in a cage while people discuss the price.
The sale of native wildlife is Illegal in India. While it can be argued that many people just aren't award of the law.....is there really any point in having a pet if they're just going to live in such horrible conditions? People in this group wonder why their bird plucks when it's blatantly obvious it's due to being confined to a small space with no enrichment.
I thought about having everyone report this group to get it shut down, but it's not going to help stop what's happening to these poor birds โน
If you know anybody involved with wildlife in India or which authorities to contact and report people please let me know โค
Had a lovely time learning some painting techniques from today and viewing his beautiful collection pop in and check out these beautiful fine art prints this week.
Spotlight Sunday! Every Sunday afternoon we will be featuring a spotlight on a particular species or family of birds.
For our first feature, we have the Psittacula family, more commonly referred to as the asiatic family.
The most commonly kept Asiatics in Australia would be the Alexandrine parrot (psittacula eupatria) and the Indian Ringneck parrot (psittacula krameri) the others are either kept to a lesser extent or not kept at all. For example, the long tailed parrot is not kept in Australia or anywhere outside of SE Asia because they do not acclimate well and typically die when transported for breeding. I also haven't seen the Nicobar parrot kept in Australia for reasons I'm not sure of, but most likely similar.
The others, I have all seen kept as pets or in aviculturist collections.
The Asiatic family is my favourite group of birds! Not just due to their stunning colours and markings but due to their personalities. While all parrots are intelligent, I have noticed that asiatics tend to be calculated and thoughtful in their actions while many other parrots are more impulsive in their behaviour.
I also love their ability to speak and mimic. While it's true not every bird is able to speak, and it should never be a primary reason for buying a bird, the asiatics are more likely to speak clearly than say a conure or a lorikeet.
They also have an excellent ability to learn tricks and patterns due to being calculated with their actions. My asiatic birds learn new things in one training session whereas others can take slightly longer.
They also tend to be a little quieter than some species but of course can still be loud at times.
My favourite thing about these guys is the way they show love. they are devoted in always wanting to be next to you or on your shoulder. I refer to Booney, one of my moustache parrots as my little sidekick. One thing to note is they are often less hands on and don't enjoy cuddles or pats so much, but with time and trust it can happen! They do however require consistent handling to remain tame, so daily scratches and pats are a must!
Turn it up guys! ๐I can't figure out what language these guys are speaking, do they sound alien to you??

Welcome to the first Model Monday of 2021! Happy New Year! If you want to be featured to, please DM us!
Today we are featuring a special little Budgie from our local friends
This is Robyn! Robyn came into Maddie's life about 6 months ago when she received a message on Facebook from a lady who wanted to rehome a bird she no longer had time for. Robyn lived in a small carrier cage with no toys, an all seed diet and no interaction with her owner. Robyn was purchased from a local pet shop that provides no guidance to new bird owners. Robynโs owner obviously wanted the best for her but had been giving her the wrong care.
Robyn was completely untame. With Maddie's help she was trained step up and now she will fly to her finger.
She is also target trained and has learned how to eat healthy - despite loving millet a little too much. Robyn and Maddie still have a lot of work to do and sheโs not perfectly trained, they have their hipcups as all owners and pets do. But we keep on going. She has turned into such a happy, sassy bird and Maddie is ao grateful to have her!
Want to have your story featured!? Send us a DM and tell us about why your bird is special. Remember, at Bitey Bird Toys we think ALL birds are special regardless of if they are a rescue, a rehome or purchased a a baby. They all have something unique and special about them.
Merry Christmas from Grover and all of us at Bitey Bird Toys.
We want to give a huge thank you for all the support you've given us during the past 6 months we've been in business.
Bitey Bird Toys started in mid June as what I thought would be just a hobby. I was blown away by how quickly things grew as I never imagined this could become anything more than just a hobby. I used to tell my husband "I want to have a birdy business" but I really thought it was just some kind of crazy idea that would never really happen.
Thank you all so much for supporting my "crazy idea" I hope you are all having an amazing, happy, and safe holiday with your loved ones both feathered and human โค๐ค
Welcome to Model Monday! Today we are featuring the beautiful Smurf from
Smurfs owner found her advertised online for free. She looked skinny and was in a very small filthy cage. When Smurfs then prospective owner called, she found out they were asking $30 and that they wanted her gone ASAP as she was attracting snakes, her siblings and parents were all eaten by snakes and she was the last remaining bird. She was picked up the next day. Smurf was extremely nervous. She had a severe wing clip where all her flight feathers were cut very short despite never being allowed out of the cage and she was scared of hands. For the first few nights smurf wouldn't sleep, most likely because that's when the snakes came out at her previous home.
Fast forward to now and Smurf loves her mum very much. She enjoys playing peek a boo with her and trusts her. I'm so glad this beautiful girl was rescued!

Exciting news! We now stock Baffle Cages!! Throwback to Grovers second day with us before he was integrated with Albert and Booney in the asiatic bird room and he had to have some cage time when I was cooking. He totally loved foraging for his food with the baffle cage! Baffle cages are an excellent option for birds of all sizes. Our baffle cages in particular are great for small to medium sized birds. We had our baffle cages manufactured to be lighter in weight than others on the market because we saw the heavy 345g weight of other baffle cages as a potential safety hazard, especially with smaller birds who live in pairs or flocks and like to play rough with their toys and food (I could totally imagine Crackers swinging from one and whacking Duckie accidentally) Therefore, we used a lighter weight stainless steel and ours weigh 195g This foraging toy can be used in many ways, filled with fresh food, nuts still in the shell, tissue paper, cardboard, fresh flowers etc. It also grows with your birds ability over time because you can gradually make things harder by lining it with paper or cardboard to give a layer to chew through before getting their food.
Believe it or not, Booney is learning colours. I just started teaching him yesterday and he has progressed to being over 90% accurate. I even mix the types of objects to make it more challenging. Did you know that small parrots are capable of such a high level of learning? I didn't know this until until about a year and a half ago when I did a 3 weekend course in parrot training. It does make sense given their intelligence and emotional level is often compared to a 2-3 year old human and human babies typically learn colours at that age. We will be adding a third colour on next week to see how he goes! #birdsofinstagram #parrotsofinstagram #bird #parrot #exoticbird #conure #birb #birdtricks #engagednotcaged #adorable #awesomepets #cutepets #smartpets #love #animalenrichment #birdtraining #moustacheparrot #moustacheparakeet
We are still in the process of making our comprehensive video covering keeping a bird fully flighted vs. clipping. Thanks so much for all your responses last week to our question regarding if you clip or not and if you clip what is your reason for clipping. If anyone else has questions for the video of input for the video please let us know! We can really empathise with some of the reasons people have stated they clip wings such as flying into windows and mirrors, birds dive bombing and attacking certain family members and birds having difficulty with harness training but owners still really wanting to take them out. We are aiming to provide solutions for you to offer you a feeling of freedom of choice regarding keeping your birds flighted because most of you who said you clip, didn't sound like you really wanted to but felt you needed to due to certain environmental factors or training difficulties. Birds have been part of my life for over 20 years and we have had both clipped and unclipped birds so have seen a lot of the differencs in birds who are flighted vs. Birds who are clipped. I look forward to getting the video out to you soon! #birb #engagednotcaged #parrotlovers #parrotsofinstagram #sunconure #birdlovers #birdmom #crazybirdlady #friyay #birdsofinstagram #flightedbird #featherperfection #perfectlanding #clippedwings #flighttraining #conurelovers #cockatiel #budgie #lovebird #parakeet #adorable #cute
