The death of an animal companion, though one of the most difficult things we will ever have to face, is a natural process of life that as animal guardians we all go through.

And for many of us, though we don’t want to think about it, euthanasia is part of that process. During this month’s chit chat we shine a light on euthanasia, not as something to fear or be scared of but how we can approach it in an empowering way so as to support our animals through their transition phase.

- When is the right time, is there a right time?

- Do we want the process to take place at home or would we prefer it to take place at the vet’s?

- What happens during the process itself, what can we expect?

- How can we support our animals through the end-of-life process?

- What do we want to do leading up to the time, what do we want to do on the day?

- What happens after our animal has transitioned? Do we want a cremation or a burial?

- What can we do if we need help processing our emotions?

There is no right or wrong. This month’s chit chat is an open discussion to share information, experiences and thoughts so that we can approach their end-of-life phase with some sense of comfort and peace, both for ourselves and our animals. Please come and join us.

Why we don’t recommend using a short lead when walking your dog:

Short Leads:

➡ Restrict your dog’s movement. When our dogs have to walk close to us, they are unable to use correct gait. Restriction in movement creates unhealthy movement. This contributes to long term damage and pain within joints and muscles.

➡ Restrict your dog’s communication with other dogs, animals and people. When we limit our dogs ability to communicate, we then get misunderstandings and undesirable behaviour.

➡ Restrict your dog’s interaction with their environment. This restriction inhibits your dog in their ability to think for themselves and make positive choices, thereby inhibiting their ability to build self-confidence.

➡ Restrict your dog’s ability to sniff and explore. This restriction really makes your dog’s world small. There nose is their super-power and one of the ways they learn about what’s going on in their world.

Why we recommend using a long lead when walking your dog:

Long Leads:

➡ Allow your dog more freedom of movement. This allows our dogs the ability to move in a more natural and healthy way, minimising the risk of injury and long-term damage to their body.

➡ Allow your dog to communicate with other dogs, animals and people. This has a positive effect on their overall health, wellbeing and behaviour.

➡ Allow your dog to interact with their environment. This interaction and exploration allows our dogs to learn, problem solve and build self-confidence at their pace and in a positive manner.

➡ Allow your dog greater freedom to sniff. Dog’s love to sniff and explore their environment. Sniffing is a calming and rewarding activity that offers many health benefits.

Want a long lead for your dog walks? Come and see us at The Complete Pet Company.

The topic of Euthanasia is not a light-hearted topic for the dinner table. However, it is an important topic that ought to be openly discussed so that when our animals are approaching their end of life, we are there to fully support them.

This month’s chit chat is an open discussion about Euthanasia:

- When is the right time, is there a right time?

- Do we want the process to take place at home or would we prefer it to take place at the vet’s?

When our canine or feline companions experience ongoing health or behavioural challenges, if we continue looking for quick fixes, we generally end up with just band-aid solutions.

To get to the root of the problem, we need to consider all aspects of our dog or cat’s life.

Euthanasia is a topic that many of us are uncomfortable discussing. Losing our animal companions is heartbreaking and the overwhelming grief and fear we feel just thinking about it stops many of us from wanting to talk about it.

However, death is an inevitable part of life and one we believe is very important to discuss so that when the time comes, we are as prepared as we can be and we can be fully present for our animals, allowing them to transition with dignity and grace.

This month’s chit chat is an open discussion about Euthanasia:

- When is the right time, is there a right time?

There is no right or wrong. This month’s chit chat is an open discussion to share information, experiences and thoughts so that we can best support our animals during this sacred time of end-of-life. Please come and join us.

When considering the health and wellbeing of our dogs or cats, it is important to remember that while their basic needs and natural behaviours are similar, the way in which those needs are met and those behaviours expressed is very individual.

So whether choosing a food, a supplement or an activity for your animal, take a moment to consider their wants and desires as well as their capabilities. For example, you may have 2 dogs in your home with completely different personalities, completely different food requirements and completely different reactions to their environment.

Remember there is no one size fits all. Our dogs and cats are just as beautifully unique as we are. Please remember to tailor their care to meet that uniqueness.

Applied Zoopharmacognosy is the method that allows our dogs to self-medicate by choosing from various plant extracts. This approach allows them to instinctively select what they need at any given time to naturally support the healing process and achieve a healthy balance.

When provided the opportunity, our dogs know which natural remedies will help them improve and maintain their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

If you would like to find out more about Applied Zoopharmacognosy and how this amazing modality can support your dog in their health and wellness, check out our website for more information or contact Jenny in store.

I really enjoyed this interview.
We must always consider the emotions of our dogs.
If your dog is behaving in a certain way, we must look beyond the behaviour to understand why.
Ask yourself, what you may be doing, history, pain, fear, equipment and so much more.
Punishment at any level is never the answer.
Always allow your dog to feel important, give them time and space to understand what it is you are asking.
Choice gives Confidence!

Just as we have a strong desire to feel safe, so to do our animals. And as their guardians, it is our responsibility to ensure that desire for safety is met.

Here are just a few simple ways we can do that:

1. Ensure their environment is calm and peaceful.

2. Provide different sleeping options, ensuring they can sleep soundly without being disturbed.

3. Understand their language and what they are communicating with us and those around them.

4. Ensure quality time with yourself, while also ensuring they have the opportunity to spend time with friends.

5. Allow for appropriate exercise that meets their physical, mental and emotional needs, while also allowing them to be curious and make choices for themselves, thereby building confidence.
