Did you know?

Turtles shed their skin and their shell as they grow. The scales or ‘scutes’ peel off one at a time as new scutes form below.

Eastern Long Neck turtles also change colour as they grow. Juveniles are born with a black/blue coloured shell or ‘carapace’ with vibrant orange spots on their underside or ‘plastron’. Eventually the shell will change to a brown shade and the spots turn to a light yellow.

The reason for this colour change is not entirely known but is assumed that the baby turtles are more brightly coloured as a defence while their shell is still not a sufficient size or density to offer much protection. In nature, brighter colours can often be a deterrent to predators as they may indicate that the animal is venomous or poisonous if eaten.

As adults their colours are more geared towards camouflage as their best defence is to remain hidden when predators are nearby.

When I’m not making turtle food, I’m making turtle play pens… apparently 😅
Here are some progress shots! I still need to add some more plants, a small pond and make it a bit more escape proof. Turtles are actually fairly good diggers, climbers and determined escape artists. Now to just wait for another sunny day ☀️🐢

Some lock down fun! Applying 300+ stickers to my packaging. How exhilarating 😅🐢

Can you name all 10 of these ingredients?

This is a new type of turtle food I’m currently trialing. It’s a combination of whole food items, pellets and selection of fish. It’s called ‘Turtle Trail Mix’ ❤️🐢

Do turtles have ears? Can they hear?

The answer is yes… well kind of!

Turtles do not have the kind of ears that are familiar to us. They are not external like ours and lack the ability to hear the range of sounds that we can. They instead have internal ears covered by a flap of skin.

These ears are not really made for hearing sound as we know it, instead they pick up vibrations and air displacement. This is used to sense things such as moving prey or approaching predators. Their hearing it much better in water than out.

Turtles hearing range is around 200 to 750 Hz. In comparison, humans can hear between the range of 20 to 20,000 Hz.

However, hearing is really only a secondary sense for turtles. Their eyesight and sense of smell more than make up for it. Studies have shown that turtles can see and recognise shapes, colours and patterns. Their smell is also much more highly tuned than our own, particularly under water.
