Synthetic Winter Rugs – to wash or not to wash?
First it is helpful to know what makes a synthetic rug water proof AND breathable.
The fabric of the rug has bonded on the inside side a water proof membrane, which has tiny microscopic holes in it that allow the water v***r (sweat) coming off the horse to escape but which are too small to allow the liquid water (rain) to enter.
The outside of the fabric has a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) layer and aids in maintaining the breathability of your rugs by causing the water to shed off the rug quickly so that the water v***r can escape. If the DWR is no longer present the water will saturate the fabric making it water logged, heavy and no longer breathable until the fabric dries out completely.
Dirt, sweat, hair and bacteria will clog the fabric and cause extra wear on both the waterproof membrane and the DWR.
Washing your rugs will prolong the life and efficiency of your synthetic rugs, reproofing to restore the DWR layer will also help to keep your rugs working as they should and will help with those older rugs whose water proof membrane is starting to deteriorate.

The internal waterproofing on this rug is about as bad as it gets. The rug has been washed and treated externally with the water proofing product. You can see the water pooling on the fabric, not being absorbed, just running straight off and the inside is dry despite the fact that the rubber membrane is - well isn't.
