Eastern Small-eyed Snake. π
(Cryptophis Nigrescens)
Quite a small snake with the average size being around 50cm.
They feed on smaller snakes, small lizards, their eggs and sometimes frogs.
Often mistaken for the Red Bellied Black snake due to similarities in colouring at a glance they are however quite different.
Generally a glossy dark grey to black with a cream to pink belly.
Their belly colouring does not extend up their side like it does on the RBB. They are also nocturnal and as their name suggests they have quite small eyes.
These guys are found in Eastern Australia from Cape York all the way down to Victoria.
They are ready biters and if handled tend to thrash around.
If you do receive a bite from an Eastern Small Eyed Snake be sure to apply appropriate first aid and seek medical attention immediately.
They are HIGHLY VENOMOUS and are responsible for one recorded death.
Right all the serious stuff is out!
Now let's appreciate the beauty of this snake. ππ
Remember everyone, whether you love them or hate them. Snakes are an important part of our ecosystem and deserve just as much respect as our koalas and kangaroos. ππβ€
