Kylie and her partner Jono operate Wandilla Farm and Equine Services. We offers services in barefoot trimming, equine nutrition, hay and chaff supplies, custom mineral mixes and equine supplements. Kylie has a special interest in horses with PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction - Cushings Disease) and EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome). We aim for optimum health in our horses via nutrition - m

ineral balanced diet, herd turnout and regular trimming and bodywork if required. We grow own hay and source hay locally for the varying nutritional requirements for our horses. Our hay is tested through Equi-Analytical or Dairy One in the USA which provides a foundation for custom mineral and nutritional supplementation. We offer services in hay coring/testing and balancing diets for optimal nutrition. We are passionate about our horse's hooves and trim on a 3-4 week cycle depending on growth/wear and pathologies/deformities. Our horses have come to us with varying degrees of hoof deformities and pathologies including, acute and chronic laminitis, chronic founder, club feet, hoof cracks and seedy toe to name a few. We are passionate about rehabilitation and are more than happy to work with other professionals including vets, farriers, bodyworkers/therapists and other modalities....it's all about what can help the horse! I am a qualified equine podiotherapist (barefoot trimmer) having studied through the Australian College of Equine Podiotherapy in Victoria and have been trimming for seven years. Based on the teachings of Dr Eleanor I compound minerals particularly copper, zinc and salt for my clients focusing on overall health of the horse. Currently completing my studies with:

National College of Traditional Medicine - Diploma in Equine Nutrition

Online nutrition and other courses with Dr Eleanor Kellon. - graduate NRC and forever student! Red Light therapy with Equestricare - student

Have you checked out the Blog recently?

I've recently touched on Laminitis and PPID so this week's blog touches on the underlying causes of laminitis, from endocrine disorders like PPID and EMS to mechanical issues and dietary factors.

Drop by today:

Laminitis is often a symptom of mechanical issues, systemic problems, or, most commonly, endocrine disorders such as PPID (e.g., Cushing’s Disease) or EMS (i.e., Insulin Resistance). You’ll often hear me say that laminitis is a symptom of a trigger in the horse, with most cases being related to ...

What's going on Wednesday?

Other than me blowing my top, this week is laminitis 😫

Horses with high insulin are carbohydrate intolerant, meaning they are intolerant to the glucose and starch in grasses. For consistent insulin and glucose levels They need to switch to low-sugar hay. Unlike pastures, the sugars in hay don't fluctuate due to photosynthesis, making it a safer option for these horses. Soaking hay can further reduce glucose content.

Exercise is crucial for improving insulin sensitivity and reducing weight, especially in obese horses. Although it might seem harsh to limit grass intake, doing so is essential for their health and well-being.

If you're unsure how to manage an EMS or PPID horse, seek guidance. We're here to help, but remember, hoof health starts with overall health.

I've worked so hard over the last 12 years to bring education and nutritional supplements that are affordable and accessible to everyone. In conjunction with guidance and resources for those with sick horses such as EMS and PPID, I am getting closer every day to my dream of helping make life a little bit easier for horse owners.

This man is a farmer so I can't show his face on Social Media. Say G'day to Jono 😆

Jono spends his days working hard on the farm and for long hours in his off-farm job as well, but he always finds time to support me in all my equine-related ventures. 🐴 Whether it's helping me mix minerals, building the next dream or cheering me on when I need it most, Jono is my biggest fan.

Even though he doesn't use the products himself, his unwavering support makes all the difference.

Don't forget to thank a farmer this week 😉

What's going on Wednesday?

When I come across a hoof with obvious visual abnormalities, my immediate thought is: what's going on here? What changes has this horse been through recently? Because the story of a horse can often be read through its hooves.

The hoof wall can reveal clues about the horse's lifestyle, diet, hormonal health, herd dynamics, recent vaccinations, deworming schedules, trimming practices, and more. When we see these signs, it's essential to start asking questions.

Unusual hoof lines across all four feet are a clear indication that something is not right. This is not normal and should prompt further investigation.

Talk to your hoof care provider or vet. Learn to recognize what’s typical and what isn’t. The more questions you ask, the better equipped you'll be to maintain your horse's hoof health and overall well-being.

Did you know that Magnesium is one of those hidden heroes in a horse's diet?

Magnesium plays a crucial role in muscle function, nerve transmission, and overall health. It is also a fundamental element for the synthesis of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, insulin sensitivity and the important antioxidant glutathione.

The best way to know whether your horse needs additional magnesium supplements is from your hay/pasture analysis accompanied by a nutritional analysis.

There are so many people around the world who invest their time and energy into creating opportunities for people who don't have the luxuries of horses that many of us have via charities and non for profits.

These charities rely on donations and grants to keep them chugging along.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Ashlee Black for her donation of hay to Herd Together. This donation is very much appreciated by the steeds and the crew at Herd Together.

Thank you to Katrina for your endless devotion to creating an environment where kids and adults can experience horses in a calm, fun and safe environment 😊

What's going on Wednesday?

Would you be surprised if I told you it's not something sinister? That's right, it's simply frog shedding!

Shedding of frogs and false sole happens in a lot of horses and is nothing to be alarmed about. If you find your frog starting to lift off like this, that is shedding. This can be quite common to see when seasons change from super dry to wet.

On another note, the cracks you see in the sole are just false sole that will come off at a later date. On this trim, I only took off what flaked off.

Mineral spotlight COPPER 🔎

Copper is an essential trace mineral that must come from the diet.

After starting on Wandilla Mineral Mix, the most common comment from clients is “I can’t believe the changes in my horse’s coat!” This is due to the copper-dependent enzyme Tyrosinase, which creates the pigment melanin. So the next time you see a black horse with a red tinge - the answer is Copper!

What's going on Wednesday?

I’m always looking for the best tools and techniques to ensure the health and well-being of the horses in my care. One of my go-to tools for trimming hooves is the grinder. Yep that's right! Old faithful.

Using power tools in experienced hands with the right horse, under safe conditions, is an excellent way to achieve optimal results. The grinder is especially useful for certain horses in my clientele, as well as my own. It saves my body, gets the job done quicker, and works beautifully on rock-hard feet.

Another tool in my kit to keep your horses happy and healthy! 🧰🐎

A little Mineral Monday for you folks, this week focussing on our Amino Mix 🔎

Did you know that AMINO ACIDS are the building blocks of protein? In order for the body to produce amino chains, all the amino acids must be present. Essential amino acids must come from the diet, while non-essential amino acids can be manufactured in the body.

Think about this, your horse eats a variety of plants that contain specific amino acids, breaks those down and then reassembles them into enzymes, hormones, haemoglobin, muscle, bone, hair, and hoof....the biochemistry of the body is absolutely mind-blowing! This is why we need to optimise our horse's amino acid requirements so the biochemistry, bone, muscle, skin, hoofs, and hair all function and grow.

What's going on Wednesday?

Here's a great shot of an example of separation. Separation provides an inlet for pathogens to invade the hoof wall leading to seedy toe and/or white line disease.

Cleaning feet daily and inspecting the hoof wall are the keys to preventing hoof pathology.

If your horse's hoof capsule is invaded by pathogens, treatment via cleaning and using products to prevent further invasion is the key to success. There will be times where your hoofcare professional may need to resect the hoof capsule to remove seedy toe (hoof wall) and thrush (frog).

The best prevention is daily management by the owner and I encourage my clients to inspect daily and practice preventative disease management.

Our friends at Bee Line Equine stock a fantastic range of products to help! I recommend and use these products myself.

Nutrition, environment and movement are also part of the big picture in hoof health but that's a post for another day.
