What's so bad about kibble? 🤷🏼‍♀️
Part 2.

We all want the best for our dogs and that can make selecting the right food a stressful process. If you don't read or understand the ingredients you can be overwhelmed by and sucked into the clever marketing of dog food and treat companies.

If you see any of these 5 ingredients on any dog food or treats, please put it back on the shelf! 🙏🏻

1. BHA/BHT
When you read ingredients that contain antioxidants it, understandably, gives the impressions that it is healthy. Sadly, these synthetic antioxidants are merely used to help stop the fats from going rancid. There are also reports that the amount added to pet foods causes cancer and reproductive toxicant.

2. Ethoxyquin
This is another synthetic antioxidant used to prevent fats from going rancid; usually in foods that are fish-based. It is considered unacceptable in human food but is still permitted in some pet food. It's also used as a pesticide, so you can imagine what it's doing to your pet's health.

3. Meat and Meat Meal
Run far and fast from any product that contains this generic term. It means that the pet food can contain any rendered meat such as expired supermarket meats (including the packaging), euthanised animals, rotting carcasses, road kill and even animal ear tags! It is best to only purchase products that clearly state the meats' source, such as beef, lamb and/or poultry.

4. Sugars
Dog food and treats contain sugars to not only make the food more palatable, but also acts as a preservative. Sugars can contribute to weight gain, diabetes and tooth decay, much like in humans! Sugars can be listed in the ingredients as corn syrup, sucrose, glycerine, caramel, dextrose, fructose, glucose, beet pulp, maltodextrin and molasses. Dogs simply don't need any of these added sugars in their diet.

5. Soy
Although soy is a great source of plant based protein, it is difficult for dogs to digest and can cause bloating and flatulence. It is a cheap protein source used to boost the protein content of lower-quality dog food.

What's so bad about kibble? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Part 1.

What is kibble?
Kibble, by definition is ground meal shaped into pellets, especially for pet food. The commercial pet food industry is so large and there are so many different companies creating kibble.

Not all kibble brands are bad, there are some that have beneficial ingredients, contain no nasties and are prepared in an ethical way. We will highlight those brands in a later post but for now, here's why the big commercial brands aren't providing adequate nutrition for your pet.

One of the biggest reasons why kibble isn't an appropriate diet for your pet is how processed the ingredients are, many of the nutrients in kibble are lost during the high-heat process, to compensate for this, flavour enhancers and synthetic nutrients are added to replace what has been lost. These additives and other carcinogens are created in this process that could be detrimental to your dog’s long-term health.

Ingredient of the Month 🐾
Beef 🐄

Beef is usually one of the more affordable meats on the market and is a quality source of protein that helps your dog build muscle. The fat in beef can help your pup feel full and the vitamins and minerals help keep your pups coat and skin healthy.

Beef is high in vitamins and minerals such as, iron, zinc, selenium and vitamins B12, B3 and B6.

Ingredient of the Month 🐾
Kangaroo 🦘

Kangaroo has many advantages as an ingredient in dog food. It is an ideal source of protein and is considered to be naturally the leanest red meat protein available.

Kangaroo meat also has among the best levels of zinc and iron of any meat on the market.

The importance of zinc is that it is critical for the correct function of cell membranes. It also supports a dog’s immune responses to disease, making sure they quickly recover from any wounds they may suffer over the course of their life.

The primary function of iron is to combine with both copper and protein to create haemoglobin. This is the oxygen-carrying molecule that is found in red blood cells. If a dog is deficient in iron it can lead to anaemia, this can not only hinder a dog’s growth rate but also weaken the animal’s immune system.

Ingredient of the Month 🐾
Kefir 🥛

Kefir is in simple terms, a fermented yoghurt, and is also a probiotic.

The term probiotic refers to the beneficial bacteria that live in the GI tract in humans and animals. There are billions of probiotic bacteria are naturally found in your dog’s gut.

These bacteria work together to help your dog digest food, make vitamins, and strengthen your dog’s immune system. Sometimes the amounts and type of bacteria can change in your dog and this can make them sick.

Some things can cause damage to healthy bacteria and disrupt the balance between healthy and harmful microbes in your dog’s gut, such as, antibiotics, stress, eating spoiled food, parasites, infection, new food, old age, or food allergies.

Kefir’s real super power lies in its probiotic content. Containing as many as 61 different strains of bacteria and yeast, kefir supports and boosts gut health, and even protects against against infection by preventing harmful bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli from developing.

Nutritionally, kefir is an excellent source of protein, calcium and vitamin K, these are nutrients that support bone health. It also contains vitamins B12 and B2, which help the body to metabolize fat and protein, and minerals like magnesium and potassium.

Ingredient of the Month 🐾
Broccoli 🥦

Broccoli has so many nutritional benefits and is a key staple in our recipes for this reason.

Broccoli prevents oxidative stress which is a major cause of cancer and chronic diseases. It contains high levels of vitamin C which is an antioxidant and therefore will help combat oxidative stress!

Broccoli also has the power to assist in the reduction of inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation is the body's natural process that helps your dog heal, but chronic inflammation can lead to diseases such as arthritis, allergies, asthma, dementia, and cancer.

Bacteria is everywhere. Fresh food is not sterile and will contain bacteria just like there are bacteria that make up every human’s digestive tract.

When it comes to raw feeding, there are quite a few misconceptions around bacteria and their risks involved. Salmonella is the bacteria that tends to cause the biggest concerns.

In short, as long as the food is prepared and stored correctly, the risks are quite minimal. Salmonella is actually more of an issue for humans than it is for carnivorous pets.

There are a few reasons why the risks are quite minimal, firstly, the pH level of dog's and cat's stomach is quite acidic (1-2) but salmonella can only survive in a more alkaline environment (pH of 3.8+), secondly, dogs and especially cats have a short digestive tract (food is fully processed in 6-8hrs) but salmonella requires an incubation period of over 8hrs.

To reduce risks for humans, it is important to ensure that safe food handling practices are put in place when preparing and serving raw food to pets. 🐾
