☀️💧Following heavy or prolonged exercise, particularly when conducted in a hot and humid environment, water intake and electrolytes available in feed are not enough to replenish both water and electrolyte stores, due to the amounts lost in sweat. If horses are not adequately rehydrated and electrolyte balance not restored this can result in a decrease in performance and lethargy. The provision of a quality electrolyte within a racehorse's diet is an effective way to restore the electrolytes lost in sweat and to promote adequate water intake.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗡𝗦𝗖 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗴?

If you have a horse that suffers from 𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔 or 𝑷𝑺𝑺𝑴 𝒕𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒑 it is important to know the 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗡𝗦𝗖) content of the feed that you choose to feed them. When choosing a feed for these horses it is important to look at the ingredients and ensure there are no grain or grain by-products and to read the nutrient analysis. You want to look at both the 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗪𝗦𝗖) content and the 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 content and add these together to give you NSC content. For horses with EMS, PPID or that are insulin resistance total 𝗡𝗦𝗖 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝟭𝟮%.

𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗜 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴?

Did you know that lush, growing spring grass often has a very high water content and low dry matter content? If your horse is grazing lush pasture they may be getting a very low intake of dry matter and fibre (what they digest in their hindgut). Which is often why we can see horses develop diarrhoea or struggle to hold weight on what looks like nice, green grass. These horses may benefit from the addition of hay in their diet to increase their dry matter and fibre intake.

Congratulations to New Zealand trainer Chad Ormsby and his team at Riverrock Farm with a fantastic win from Lord Weyburn in the Pryde’s EasiFeed 1300 on Wednesday at Waikato Thoroughbred Racing on the Cambridge track. Wonderful to see a Pryde’s Performance powered galloper win!

During the breeding season stallions have increased requirements for digestible energy and protein in their diets to support weight maintenance, muscling, and fertility. Their vitamin and mineral requirements also increase and ensuring these requirements are met (particularly Vitamin E, Selenium and Zinc) can also help to support their fertility.

Grain is fed predominantly as a source of energy (from the starch it contains). However, horses are only able to efficiently digest starch within their small intestine (where it is meant to be digested), if the grain has been cooked. Studies have shown that the process of extrusion is the most effective cooking method to allow for maximum starch digestion within the small intestine. Therefore, feeding extruded grain, provides your breeding mares and growing horse with a highly digestible source of energy; while preventing starch from reaching the hindgut, keeping it healthy and allowing efficient digestion of fibre.

BioMare Cubes contains three sources of grain: extruded wheat, extruded corn and extruded barley. Lactating mares and growing horses require higher amounts of energy in their diet to support milk production and growth. In most cases pasture is not enough to meet these increased energy requirements and hence a highly digestible source of energy such as BioMare Cubes can be added to the diet to meet these requirements.
