Hazard of the month

Chocolate and Hot Cross Buns

Easter is a great time with chocolate and hot cross buns often being enjoyed by all. However they can be deadly for our pets. They love the taste just like us, which means accidents can happen if they are available around the home.

Easter treats that your pet should stay clear from are chocolate, sultanas and raisins.

Chocolate contains substances known as methylxanthines (specifically caffeine and theobromine), which dogs are far more sensitive to than people. Different types of chocolate contain varying amounts of methylxanthines. In general, though, the darker and more bitter the chocolate the greater the danger.

Symptoms of chocolate toxicity can take several hours to show, and even longer to disappear. Some signs that your dog may have eaten chocolate are:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Increased thirst
• Excessive urination
• Faster than normal heartbeat
• Muscle spasms
• Seizures

High doses of chocolate ingested can result in cardiac arrest. The heart fails to pump blood effectively and can lead to sudden death or permanent internal damage if not provided with immediate emergency medical attention.

How is chocolate poisoning treated?

Treatments can vary depending on the amount of chocolate that your dog has eaten however the first step if treated early is to induce vomiting if it is safe to do so, to reduce the absorption of the theobromine. Depending on the severity of the poisoning, it may be necessary to administer IV fluids to help flush out your pet's system.

Hot cross buns which contain dried fruit, such as currants, sultanas, and raisins, are all toxic to dogs. Even if your dog eats a small quantity of these dried fruits (and grapes), they can suffer severe kidney failure which may be fatal. Scientists do not fully understand what it is in raisins, grapes and sultanas that makes them toxic to dogs. Some pets have ingested large quantities and felt no effects, but others – including large breeds – have died after eating just a few raisins.

Symptoms of grape/rasin ingestion will typically manifest 6 to 24 hours. However, kidney failure can develop days later, making it crucial to be vigilant for any signs of distress or illness.

• Vomiting shortly after consuming the bun
• Diarrhoea and runny stools
• Abdominal discomfort

If you have noticed any of these symptoms in your pet, it’s essential to monitor them closely for further signs of distress. Additionally, keep an eye out for:

• Excessive thirst
• Increased urination
• Refusal to drink or eat
• Lethargy or weakness
• Absence of urination for a prolonged period (more than 24 hours)

How is Hot cross bun poisoning treated

The veterinarian will initiate treatment by inducing vomiting if it is safe to do so. This helps to bring up any ingested fruit before it can be digested and absorbed. Blood tests may be done to check the kidney function. Further treatment depends on the clinical signs you pet is showing and the results of testing.

If your pet has eaten either chocolate or hot cross buns, please contact our clinic for further information and what you should do next.
