Puppy love! We take little puppas on group walks and match them with other dogs where they can learn and have positive interactions with other dogs. We also have a variety of equipment we use with new dogs on group walks. Long lines are amazing to gain confidence with new and young dogs.it allows them to have the ability to be a dog, sniff, run,play but also the handler to keep hold of the dog too. See our post about using long lines to learn more.

Continuing with ‘What is enrichment?’ Feeding is enrichment. The way we feed our dogs is really important. Think about how quickly your dog ‘inhales’ their food when eating from a bowl….. if you feed them from a puzzle where they have to figure it out and use their brain, they work harder to get the food. Dogs love sniffing, ripping, shredding, licking, working, so why not give them this opportunity whilst feeding them. You can also use your recycling such as egg cartons, cardboard boxes, toilet roll holders - put food inside the cardboard and let them go to town! You are providing them with the opportunity to rip, shred, tear, sniff, basically work for their food! Plus added bonuses for you is that they take longer to eat AND it mentally tired them out!

Most people think that a dog wagging its tail means they are happy but infact it can mean many different things. A slow low wagging tail could mean submission a high fast wagging tail could mean excitement or the dog being happy. The position speed and direction all just as important and should be looked at as a whole when reading a dogs body language.

A marker is a ‘feedback word’ that lets your dog know they have done an amazing job! Firstly we need to condition our dog to the sound of the marker. Words such as good, yes or nice work really well as they are short and sharp. To charge the marker, take 3-4 pieces of food (reinforcement), soft high value food is always best, such as chicken, wet dog food or even something really smelly. Say your chosen marker word and within 1/2 a second, deliver with the food. After a few repetitions. Your dog will begin to realise that the sound of the market means an amazing reinforcement is coming their way.

Dogs need space for lots of reasons. Just like humans the world and the stimulus of the world can get too much sometimes along with other factors. Reasons dogs need space could be:
* be nervous and scared around people and/or dogs
* may have had a bad experience with other dogs and not like them in there space
* be in training
* they get overstimulated by stimulus in the environment they are in (people, dogs, trees, birds) and then can not focus
* they have had an operation
* they are old

Please consider these points plus many more when you see a dog and don’t assume all dogs love people/dogs/kids and ask permission to say hi and if it’s not ok, give the dog space to feel more comfortable.
