Clean aviary and the New quail jail is set up 🤗😎

I love these new cages they so practical and accessible. While I don’t like having to seperate and isolate, these guys are little savages and seems they can’t be one big happy family 😅

I currently have 7 females 7 males, it’s taken me along time to sell male birds to get the numbers down to this. I had 30 kings in here at one stage!
So, I decided to set up this way, allowing me to seperate the males giving the females a break from breeding, stoping the fighting and feather plucking between everybody. Possibility to use this as a breeding set up also.

The dividers here are especially cool, I have decided to put them in backwards because of the water set up I have, the handle allows room for the pipes while still touching the back of the cage keeping the birds seperate.
I’m still adjusting things each day to make this as sustainable as possible 🤓 if you have any helpful suggestions please comment 😌

I work away from home so when I’m away I will have the dividers in keeping the males seperate from each other, since I’ve been home I have let 2 males be together in one cage, giving them extra space and each others company during the day 😊

Now, fingers crossed the feather plucking, Stops! And this works as well as I think it will!
2 males and 6 females in the aviary.
5 males and 1 female in isolation 🤗 1 of my hens is unwell, I think she has an eye worm 😣

My new breeding cage arrived in record timing from eBay 😍🤗 with no instructions and the finished product looks nothing like the photo 😝BUT I’m so excited to deck this out for my birds!

Today was a funny surprise!

I’ve always been so confident I haven’t had mice hang around our quails. The aviary is bolted to concrete, that goes 50mm past the shed so nothing can dig underneath, 10mm aviary wire popriveted on the front of the shed, all stainless steels all supposed to be rodent proof. I store the food in the house, clean the aviary regularly, I turn the soil in there once a month sometimes more.
Yet somehow I found a mouse house INSIDE the aviary today 🤯 we caught 10 mice I’m not 100% sure if I got them all but man they’re crafty! And trying to chase a mouse amongst 20+ quail that are no much bigger than the mouse, trying not to squash anyone! 😮‍💨😂
There was tunnels all the way thought the aviary under every single plant! I had to dig up everything. Eventually found the nest under a big plant, that was in the herb garden where I don’t move the soil unless replanting. It looked like a woven basket, underground!

I did notice something was burrowing in the dirt inside the aviary a few months ago but anytime I dug to investigate I found a wood roach or beetle so didn’t think anything off it 😅 until today a mouse casually come out for a stretch! now I know, maybe nothings rodent proof!

We checked the aviary for holes walls, still can’t picture how they got in. Here’s hoping I got all of them out!

Check out this little toughty, reminds me of an emu/orstich or something much bigger.

I was trying to photograph the massive nest they’re sharing and she’s giving me a little warning, trying to show how big she is to protect her nest.
I love seeing their wing feathers out, they puff up like that and normally move quite fast to scare away predators. 🦃

Never mind his bald head, because I have so many males there is a literal pecking order.
He’s fine, the feathers grown back quickly, just needs to wear a hat in the sun for now 🤠

Baby’s are growing, they’re way harder to handle already, starting to fly and feathers are showing 🤗 looks like 7 females but I don’t believe they’re ALL females I can’t be that luck, can I 😂🤞🏼
Still soooooooo cute!

Pic at the end was 3 males sharing seeds, the males will find a nice seed or bug and call for a mate to give it to, sometimes that’s yah silly brother instead of a toey hen haha! 😂

Cuddle time 🥰 much to their disgust!
The babies don’t mind it for now it’s warm and snuggly, but the adults! I’m surprised they sat still long enough for a photo!
My hens wouldn’t have a bar of it so most of the pics are males, Couple of my Favorite boys!
You can tell by their Clown face! 🤡 they have white markings on their chin/neck.
Also here’s a size guide for y’all. They’re smaller than people think 🤗

It pays to get up close and check their feet and faces at times to make sure everything’s clean and healthy! Their feet can get yucky and sore from poor housekeeping, build up of droppings can be dangerous.
I till the soil in here regularly, they not only get fresh bugs and love to help me dig. It keeps the floor fresh and clean. Removing half the soil to keep for my veggie gard and replacing it wil clean new soil once a year.
My birds are wild in the aviary I rarely handle them, they get scraps, seed, herbs and bugs from the soil in there so I don’t need to do much. But alway love handeling then even if it’s a chase!

Hey guys! Long time no see 🤗
I have exciting news, I’ve decided to breed some more kings, we just had a few hatch! I’ll be home over the weekend to find out how many.

I’m wondering if anyone here would be interested in buying some?
I know I’ve had a few enquires but have been unable to supply. It won’t be right away as I’ll have to wait to be able to s*x them, just wondering if anyone’s looking for quail atm 🥰🐣🐣

I love the little sounds they make when on the hunt for bugs 🤗 but gosh they love those live meal worms 🐛
I picked them up from our local pet store a few weeks ago, a small packet around $12 has lasted aaaages. I don’t give them every day and had been sharing them with this seasons baby magpies and butcher birds that come to visit. so impressed with how long it’s lasting!
Thinking I’ll switch from dry meal worms to these nice live ones 👍🏼 keep them in the fridge for a nice fatty Quail Snack 🐥

Ever seen a bird clean greens out of a crocs teeth 😜 This was our best purchase ever 😂 originally designed for a fish tank but I couldn’t help myself, it’s shaped like a tunnel so they love it. 😄

Yum! Herbs!
Did you know how much King Quails love Herbs 😍 Dill, Parsley, Marjoram, Basil, Mint the list goes on.
All are super easy to grow, inexpensive and benificial to your birds health!
For example
🌱Marjoram, enhances reproductive health.
🌱Dill is great for respiratory health,
🌱Lemon balm, lowered stress and smells lovely in the aviary!
🌱Lemon grass keeps bugs away and they love to hide in the long grass ☺️

Super easy to learn the benefits of these herbs, just chuck in google “herbs quail like” and have a read, choose your favourite herb and off you go.

I do recommend planting them in pots as the birds love them a little too much and will eat it, roots and all!!! 😳 so a nice round low pot they can jump into and remove it to give the plant time to recover.

OR

I made some cute little cages for my herbs, buried them in the ground a little so they can peck at the outside leaves and can’t dig up the plant 👌🏼

*Flash Back* too 2019 when we had an early Christmas surprise, 19/20 eggs hatch, from 4 of our hens sitting on 2 nests. Working their little butts off to keep these guys warm and safe 🤗

Much experimenting, and learning to get them this happy. They’re all from the same clutch which helps, apart from one adopted hen. All the parents where passed on to new homes as they didn’t fit in once they young had grown. Patience pays off in the end. 🐥

He was attacked by other males as it’s in their nature to chase away the competition, as a result his eyes where pecked at 😢
He’s nearly fully healed now safe a sound and has his missus to look after him.
They would make a great pair on their own, looking like they’re ready to breed and settle down together 💛

it’s with a heavy heart I’m sharing this post about my Beautiful Best Friends 2 year old son, Darcy. 🦆

It is so important to me that you would take the time to stop and read this!!!

A few days of him being randomly unwell turning into a very surreal and sudden Life Flight to QLD Children’s Hospital in Brisbane where the sweet boy has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). 💛

Darcy and his Beautiful family have a long and hard times ahead of them, they’re preparing for 2+ years of treatments, chemotherapy has already begun.

His wonderful Mother, Maddy has had to stop work immediately to be by his side in Brisbane 3hrs away from their home in Maryborough, while the other half of their family, his outstanding Dad, Lee and Darcy’s Gorgeous 4yr old sister Ellie-May are at home running the family business.

If you would all take the time to check out the Go Fund Me page and please, please help me, help them with the upcoming expenses, Darcy and his family have had their world rocked and big changes are to come, he will be needing new ways to learn and play in isolation now his immune system is compromised, his family will be traveling to Brisbane regularly to visit and funds for any medications and rescources they’ll need to treat him.
On top of you helping them and how much it would mean to all of us, Maddy and Lee have decided that any funds not used for Darcy Duck they will be donating back to the Make-A-Wish, Leukemia and Star-Light foundations to help others.

😢 it’s official, we pulled down our old aviary yesterday! Going to miss having the birds right there outside out lounge room window, The mail man will miss seeing them at the front door too 😅

but they’re better off in the new aviary with plenty of room. And now we can renovate the front patio 🤙🏼

Boy we have been busy 😍 check out our new aviary, it’s built like a brick 💩 house!

We layed a concrete slab, bolted it down, removed all the screws and replaced with over 300 rivets so no sharp edges inside for bird safety, got some great mulch for the floor after grinding a stump that was in the way of our concreting, then we modified the front wall so that it’s all mesh and put a little window in the back for more sunlight, made some new feeders with pipe we had laying around, water tank is hooked up they’re basically self sufficient in there now, I still give them fresh vegies each day and collect the eggs for breakfast tho.

Another bird needing some help 🙊 neighbours found it with a broken wing.
Very noisy this one, it’s a Scaly-breasted Lorikeet. Hopefully we can mend it and send it home soon! 💚💙💛❤️

Finally we have this pair, a cinnamon colour male and natural colour hen. They are another cute couple, very calm and nosey this bunch they like to watch us and butt into conversations while we sit in the patio. But it’s the cutest so it’s okay.

Fresh, teeny tiny eggs 💚 enough there for one eggs on toast 😜

FYI King Quails are the smallest true quail and their eggs are about (in my opinion, don’t quote me on this part) a 6:1 size ratio compared to chicken eggs.
Larger quail however, like Japanese Quail, have a 4:1 size ratio.

Quails also lay more frequently than chickens do in a year, as chicken may drop off laying if it gets too hot or cold, where quails aren’t so fussy with the climate and will happily lay nearly all year around.

Their eggs also have more protein as the yoke to white ratio is bigger than chicken eggs, making them taste creamier.
Although you may need 30+ eggs to make a quiche it is deliciously worth it 🥰
