"A magnificent killer whale named Tahlequah
gave birth and caught the worldā€™s attention.
Her calf died only thirty minutes after being born, each of those blessed minutes a sacrament to the progeny of love.
But the real reason journalists and photographers and millions of viewers followed this motherā€™s story, was her willingness to grieve unbidden, to become a thing utterly governed by kinship.
After a year and a half of growing this enormous life inside of her belly, and the immense feat of labor, and a half an hour of looking into one anotherā€™s eyes, Tahlequah proceeded to carry her dead baby on the tip of her nose for seventeen days, traveling more than a thousand miles all throughout the Salish Sea.
And some people think that grief is not
inexplicably beautiful. But perhaps itā€™s because those people (who are us people) no longer see grieving enacted publicly as a plea for sanity, as a way of feeding that which grants us life.
There was no real grieving at my motherā€™s funeralā€“ā€“
sniffling and shoving tears back up into our eyes, yes, but no keening. No collapsing into the bottomless cavern of one anotherā€™s trembling arms, no crying out into the insufferable heat of that late-summer day, and certainly no carrying my momā€™s dead body as a holy procession all throughout the places she ever knew and loved.
So I continued to carry her mostly on my own.
I wailed in the privacy of my own home long after the funeral was over, with only the hurting eyes of my husband to behold meā€“ā€“a kind of holding that was never meant to be done alone.
I imagine that if killer whales were not endangered, Tahlequah would have swam those seventeen days with a grand procession of many other glistening, black and white giants all across the ocean.
Or perhaps she swam for one thousand miles
to personify the loneliness of her grief in a world spiraling toward oblivion.
And our savagery for not swimming alongside her; for taking pictures, for watching her exquisite ceremony on our little screens as if it were pure entertainment, as if that couldnā€™t be any one of us, carrying our dead children out into the dark and emptied streets."

When s***m whales need a nap, they take a deep breath, dive down about 45 feet and arrange themselves into perfectly-level, vertical patterns. They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017. French photographer Stephane Granzotto was documenting s***m whales in the Mediterranean for his book on the creatures when he came across these sleeping whales.

Waiting is a skill, we as adult humans get frustrated with long queues and wait times.

For our dogs, itā€™s a skill that needs to be mastered too and we can help support the process by making the waiting just as reinforcing as the going.

Hopefully it happens here tooā¤ļø
Did you know:
If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human, but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive.

You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not.

A farmer had some puppies he needed to
sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4
pups, and set about nailing it to a post on
the edge of his yard.
As he was driving the last nail into the
post, he felt tug on his overalls
He looked down into the eyes of a little
boy.
"Mister," he said, "| want to buy one of
your puppies.'
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the
sweat of the back of his neck, "these
puppies come from fine parents and cost
a good deal of money."
The boy dropped his head for a moment
Then reaching deep into his pocket
he pulled out a handful of change and
held it up to the farmer. "I've
got Two dollars & thirty cents. Is that
enough to take a look?"
"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he
let out a whistle. "Here Dolly!" he called.
Out from the doghouse and down ramp
ran Dolly followed by four little balls of
fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the
chain link fence. His eyes danced with
delight.
As the dogs made their way to the fence,
the little boy noticed
something else stirring inside the
doghouse.
Slowly another little ball appeared, this
one noticeably smaller.
Down the ramp it slid. Then in a awkward
manner, the little pup began hobbling
toward the others, doing its best to catch
up...
"I want that one," the little boy said
pointing to the runt.
The farmer knelt down at the boy's side
and said, "Son, you don't want that
puppy. He will never be able to run and
play with you like these other dogs
would."
With that the little boy stepped back from
the fence, reached down, and began
rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing
so he revealed a steel brace running
down both sides of his leg attaching itself
to a specially made shoe.
Looking back up at the farmer, he said,
"You see sir, I don't run too well myself,
and he will need someone who
understands."
With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached
down and picked up the little pup.
Holding it carefully he handed it to the
little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy.
"No charge," answered the farmer,
"There's no charge for love.'
