Have you heard of the Central Coast Edible Garden Trail ?
There are a heap of gardens on display during the weekend of 19th and 20th November. We will be having the farm open both days. Come out and make a day of it and visit GavAnn Garden Farm, and along with a few other gardens up the northern end of the coast.

The sunshine we have all been enjoying lately has been welcomed with open arms and stomata (critical for plant photosynthesis). So there will be plenty of produce available on the day, along with blooming gardens to view.

Tickets available here: https://events.humanitix.com/central-coast-edible-garden-trail-wourk4e0

Let's help our local, small farms not hinder them!
The NSW Government is considering new laws that on face value look to streamline primary production businesses who want to diversify into agritourism. These proposed laws would look to offer exempt or complying development for things such as farm stays, farm gate sales and farm experiences such as horse riding, pick your own, tours, cafes, functions and events.
Unfortunately whilst this seems like an amazing proposal to help diversify the income stream of farmers who already do it tough, in actual fact it could make it harder in particular for smaller farms or farms that have a relatively short harvest window. The fear is that if these laws are enacted it will severely disadvantage the smaller farms potentially making them unviable. If anything recent history has taught us with covid and now wars and the aftermath of floods is that the large scale industrial agriculture and centralized supermarket distribution system doesn’t cope well in a crisis. The importance of a diversity of farms in terms of size, location and product has never been more prevalent and anything we and the government can do to help them remain viable through mechanisms such as diversifying their income streams through agritourism is desperately needed. Not to mention it would allow us as consumers to reconnect with our food in ways that the industrial, centralized food distribution system has destroyed.
Some examples of where the proposed laws fall short are -
* Many of the laws require the size of the farm to be at least 15 or 25 hectares depending on the development. For smaller farms on the peri urban fringe that may be 5 hectares or less, this is untenable and these are the farms that need to rely on agritourism the most as their capacity for earning from primary production is directly limited to the size of their landholding.
* For buildings under this proposal a boundary set back of 50 metres is required yet under the current State Environment Planning Policy farm buildings can be as close as 10 metres from a boundary. Once again this will drastically limit the options for smaller farms
* For farm experiences such as a pick your own opening times will be permitted from 8am-5pm, Sunday to Friday including Public Holidays but limited to 7am-11am Saturdays. Given many pick your owns and other farm experiences would do most of their trade on the weekends it seems incongruous that Saturdays would be limited especially considering no limitation is on Sundays.
* Furthermore for farm experiences there will be a limit of either 30 guests 25 times per year or 50 guests 10 times per year. This is completely untenable. Take for example a pick your own orange orchard, 50 guests might correlate to 20 familys who each buy 2kgs of oranges at $2/kg totalling $80 per day and over the allowed 10 days, $800 per year total revenue.
Attached is the actual draft policy proposal along with a story from 7 news and a petition opposing the laws in particular in relation to pick your owns. Please let's support our small scale local farmers and not hamper them with ridiculous laws like this.

UPDATE - Just 3 left, don't miss out on , , from just $13/kg

Ecotone Acres - Real Farm Food currently has a on our whole, half and porchetta spit pigs. This is by far the cheapest way to get your hands on , just in time for the season. If you are worried that a whole pig is too much meat get together with your friends and family to share, but be quick they won't last long at this price.
* Whole pigs $13/kg - select from small - 40-60kg, medium 60-80kg or large 80-110kg. Pigs will be skillfully portioned to your requirements and vacuum sealed for longevity. Includes everything except the "oink" including head, bones, organ meats, mince, sausage and all the prime cuts, but no curing. This is a truly nose to tail eating experience and if you choose to eat meat the only real way to honour them.
* Half pigs $14/kg - select from small - 20-30kg, medium 30-40kg, large 40-55kg. Half pigs are the same as the whole pigs above, but as the name suggests just halved.
* Porchetta spit pigs $14/kg - Ideal for a large feast. Once again you can order small - 20-30kg, medium 30-40kg, large 40-55kg. The porchetta spit pig has had the front legs and the rump removed. This leaves all the best bits for a sumptuous feast including the loin, belly, shoulder and head for presentation. Think copious amounts of crunchy crackling and superbly smoked, moist meat. We can even hire you our electric spit for just $50/day.

This post was supposed to be some exciting news about Acres soon being able to offer a whole range of . Thanks to our wonderful butcher allowing me to use their facilities, I recently set about curing 80kgs of , 50kgs of , 25kgs of and 25kgs of . After curing the bacon and capicola for about a week it needed to air dry for a bit longer to fully cure. I decided to do this in my temperature controlled cool room on the farm so I could regulate the humidity and keep a close eye on it. Unfortunately this was a huge mistake. At some point when checking the meat I inadvertently let a fly into the chamber and it managed to ruin the entire batch. The picture below is the black pepper and bay leaf cured bacon looking absolutely spectacular prior to the tragedy. Even thinking of all the positive live and learn analogies this is a very bitter pill to swallow. I’m am not discouraged however and I am eagerly awaiting our next batch of pork so I can have another crack of making you all some delectable charcuterie. Oh and of course I still have the ham and prosciutto safely locked up at the butcher but this needs a bit longer to cure.

If you would like to get your hands on some pasture raised and charcuterie, check out our products and other wonderful goodies from other local farmers and makers at Reko Ring Central Coast
