Itโ€™s common knowledge that daschounds often think they are bullet proofโ€ฆ.. this little guy found out he wasnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ฆ

After KVCC staff diagnosed a fractured tibia the owner was keen to get this little guy back to normal, so we got to work. Youโ€™ll see from the X-rays that the bone came together nicely.

A few weeks down the road this little guy is doing much better, he still has a way to go however we wish him all the best!

When this horse presented lame and had a painful swelling on his hind leg we decided to perform X-rays.

After finding a large sequestrum (dead bone that sometimes needs removing) we discussed the treatment options with the owner, and decided that for this case, surgery was appropriate.

You can see in the below images that the surgery was a success removing the sequestrum. This horse will now hopefully have a much faster recovery and be back into work in a few months.

As veterinarians in northern Australia one of the things you learn relatively quickly is;

When an animal presents with a sore eye, there is a good chance a sneaky grass seed is hiding in behind the eyelids, and often, finding this will fix the eye.

This little daschy is no exception to the rule, as dr Ayden retrieved this horrid grass seed from behind the eyelids! You can see from the green in this dogs eye that the grass seed caused a massive corneal ulcer. Good job Ayden!

โ€˜Bethโ€™ the roan fillyโ€ฆ.

Veterinarian Rupert assessed Beth after she had run through a fence the night before. In his initial examination it was found that Beth had lacerated her cornea, and coming out of her eye was her iris (the coloured part in a human eye).

Beth was rushed to the clinic and a corneal surgery was performed that day, after 2 weeks in hospital and a few weeks in the paddock, Beth is back to normal, she has complete vision and almost no scarring.

A close one for Beth!

Meet Coco - A super dog and and interesting patient.

Coco presented for โ€œurinating bloodโ€ - along with many routine diagnostic tests, an abdominal and bladder ultrasound was performed - this revealed a large blood clot (see image below). The blood clot was in fact large enough to block the urine outflow from Cocos bladder.

A urinary catheter was placed to relieve his bladder while the team tried to figure out the causeโ€ฆ.. multiple tests and diagnostics later we were able to rule out the following; UTI, bladder tumour and rat bait poisoning.

Cait Daffey then diagnosed Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia as the cause. This is a rare disease where his immune system attacks his platelets so he can no longer clot his blood, putting Coco at a high risk of haemorrhaging!

After putting Coco on some immunosuppressive medications he was able to urinate again and slowly got back to his happy self.

We wish this brave little guy all the best for his recover

When our vet Cait Daffey said she had a horse with a stick the size of her wrist stuck in a horseโ€™s groin, I must admit I thought she was exaggeratingโ€ฆโ€ฆ.

Little did I know, she was bang on!

See the video below and watch as we find out the actual size of this foreign body!

KVCC vet and nurse combo Rupert and Sally had a great day at Carlton Hill station doing equine dentals. Our staff always enjoy getting out onto stations and exploring different parts of the north.

Always great hospitality at Carlton hill - Thankyou to their crew!

Reminder that horses require annual dentals and oral examinationsโ€ฆ.. unlike most animals the horses tooth is always erupting, meaning that sharp points develop on their teeth - this can lead to many oral and systemic health problems!

Give the clinic a call if youโ€™d like your horses teeth done - 08 89722752

Update: BRUCE FOUND A HOME

Bruce! A very friendly, happy dog who needs a new home.

This young fella is castrated, up to date with vaccines, worming and etc.

The clinic rescued him from the pound and turns out he is way too friendly for a guard dogโ€ฆ.. would suit a family on some land!

27/02/2024

โ€˜Dixieโ€™ - after presenting for an acute onset 5/5 lameness conventional foot abscess treatments were started; pain relief, sole poultices and abscess drainage.

After 2 visits there was no major improvement in her lameness. At which point a decision was made between vet and owner to bring her into the clinic.

Once at the clinic, a barshoe and hospital plate was applied to the sore foot and x rays were perfomed.

X rays found a pedal bone chip fracture - the fractured bone was unstable, likely infected and was causing the ongoing lameness.

The decision was then made to perform a general anaesthesia and surgically remove the fractured piece of bone.

Following successful fragment removal and 1 week on, โ€˜Dixieโ€™ is no longer lame, and is back to being a naughty filly. Working with this fillyโ€™s owner, over the next 4 weeks we should have Dixie back to normal and the sole fully healed.
