At the end of a very tough week for staff and members, we acknowledge the community’s valuable feedback, which has reinforced the passion locals have for the Co-op.
All possible alternatives were considered by the Board before deciding to close Mitre 10 & CRT, Kew Rural Store, Comboyne Rural Store and The Department Store, however, continuing to operate would do future damage to the whole business.
“We have taken on board all of the feedback over the past few days and sincerely appreciate the outpouring of concern, especially for our staff, who remain our priority,” Chief Executive Officer Nick de Groot said.
“Despite our team’s fantastic efforts over a long period of time, the businesses we’ve been forced to close had been losing money and were no longer sustainable,” he said.
“Our short to medium-term financial position demands immediate action, however, we are firmly focussed on solutions and fresh new offerings that cement the Co-op’s future and deliver value for members.
“We intend to come back stronger, but can only do this with our members’ support. This includes taking advantage of the dramatically marked down stock at the three rural supplies stores between now and April 5.”
A couple of points that members have asked to be clarified include:
- Household and commercial gas customers will not be affected, and we will continue to provide this service post April 5 via our fuel division. Customers will receive direct communication with more details.
- The Department Store will not close until August 31 and we are working on options for the site after this date. We understand the store’s significant profile and potential uses, and our intention is to re-develop this site. We want nothing more than to see Wauchope’s CBD grow.
- The remainder of our businesses will continue to operate as normal and we are steadfast in our commitment to supporting our staff and community.
Members will have an opportunity to share their thoughts at a Members Meeting on April 4, and hear about progress and future plans. More details regarding the time and location will be shared next week.

The difficult decision has been made to close four Hastings Co-op stores to ensure our financial sustainability and protect members’ interests.
While we appreciate this announcement will affect staff, members and the wider community the Co-op’s short and medium-term financial position demands immediate action.
“A number of our businesses are underperforming and, with the cost of doing business constantly increasing, and unavoidable unfunded capital expenditure in excess of $5 million over the next five years, we will not be in a position to continue operating without substantial structural reform,” Chief Executive Officer Nick de Groot said.
Mitre 10 & CRT Wauchope, Kew Rural Store and Comboyne Rural Store will close on April 5, 2024 and The Department Store will close on August 31, 2024.
“We have already begun consultation and offered transitioning support to affected staff, and remain committed to supporting staff and members every step of the way,” Mr de Groot said.
“Recognising the challenging economic climate, Hastings Co-op and Norco, who both operate rural supplies businesses in Wauchope, and share a significant number of members, have recognised the mutual benefit in merging their members’ interests. In the spirit of the principles of co-operatives, we will work closely with Norco to ensure the interests of Co-op members are protected, and that the same friendly service and competitive offering is available to members at Norco Rural Wauchope. Where practical, Norco will offer employment to Co-op staff impacted by the closure.”
Hastings Co-op has a rich heritage of meeting the needs of its members, and serving the community, dating back to 1916 – and Mr de Groot said “this focus on delivering member value is more important than ever”.
“We are a dynamic business that has always reinvented itself, including exiting industries and selling assets where it was no longer in the interests of the members to continue to operate the,” he said.
“The core foundation of our strategic plan for 2024-27 is maximising benefits for our members and we intend to come back stronger, with a refreshed offering to deliver value to members.
“I’d like to reassure valued members that we are focussed on supporting our community in these hard economic times, but this is only possible through your continued patronage of the Co-op’s businesses.”

We've finally had some rain and everything is certainly greening up & growing!
Whilst this is fantastic, did you know our local grasses contain a compound called 'oxalate' which binds the calcium and prevents our horses from being able to digest it? If left without supplementation, a calcium deficiency will surely be heading your way!
Luckily Pryde's EasiFeed made a solution, the High Calcium Balancer which just so happens to be on special here in store.

Save $10 when you buy 2 bags of High Calcium balancer in one transaction until the 7th of December
