Hi everyone.

I have been enjoying life away from social media with my family. My mind has been clearer and I have grown to live in the here and now of all that is real around me. To that end my wife and I decided to start a local community group called . Our aim is to disconnect people from social media and smart phones so they can reconnect with the community. As this is such an important journey especially with the increase of mental health issues due social media I will take a break from the Worm Farm educational visits while we get the Unplugged project up and running. Thank you for all the support and the hundreds of kids who’s lives have been opened up to the power of worms. Kiama Unplugged has its first event next week . Event details can be found at

So this will be my last post here on Instagram and Facebook. This is not the end of Kiama Worm Farm far from it but we will continue outside of social media. Heck I am not even expecting the algorithms to show this post to you. Thank you to .hari for getting me over the line and confirming what I already knew deep inside. Social media is not good for my anxiety and mental health, it has taken away the time I need for self care. We will not generate any more content. I am available via messenger but not instagram DMs. We will of course continue with our awesome worm talks to local kids and sell our locally grown compost worms. If you would like to book please text via the FB phone number of via messenger. I believe there is enough content to show what we do and how we can help change the world on a small scale. Thank you again now turn off your phone for 20 minutes and see if you can last! See you in the real world.

A new idea tried out today. We had a tree that was suffering in boggy ground. We moved it safely to a better spot and had an idea. Why not make a super small worm farm, herb, fruit and bee friendly garden bed. It’s raised above the water table and we planted a Lemon/lime and orange tree from Fruit Salad Treeslavender from Burnetts On Barney small raised garden bed from Bunnings Warehouse Australia . We then got some drain pipe, added air holes and a flap. Added some compost worms plus food waste and paper. As the worms eat the food waste they will provide direct benefit to the plants in the bed. When the pipe is full of vermicastings just scoop the worms out and move the pipe to another part of the bed.

Now this is what a local EV charger can do. Tom decided to install this destination charger available for all EVs. Let me show you how it benefits the whole area. I was heading home from a worm talk and remembered I needed a few things and always keen to support local headed upto . Normally this is a pick and go event. With the charger I took my time by supporting more businesses. I ordered a take away lunch from a lovely Aussie bottle of wine from and of course groceries from . The car was plugged in for 13 minutes and added 17km of range. It’s a three phase 11kwh charger installed expertly by . 17km doesn’t seem much but it’s the the equivalent of $4 of fuel in the old car. I save $4 but spent more supporting local businesses. For anyone wondering it would take 5 hours here to fully charge the car but I am sure over owners would want to use it. So even a little slow charger installed at your business can make a difference.

Another Halloween over and the worms have the final say. It’s one of their favourite foods and this Tiger Worm is not holding back. Thank you to all the locals who dropped off pumpkins. It was such a great turn out that we are thinking of making this an annual thing. The pumpkins are eaten and turned into soil known as vermicastings in a beautiful closed loop food cycle. Maybe we should grow some pumpkins in our award winning children’s garden?

Two months in and the community garden has grown well. We have been interviewed by ,been judged by Kiama Garden Club for the annual competition. We have had seedlings from the neighbours and supplied by . People stand and talk to each other next to it, it’s really opened the place up. The worm farm is going well, bees are in the little bee home and we even have dinosaurs now! Mabel our rescue cat approves of the new sunny space.

Here at we love using coffee grounds in our worm farms. It’s goes against the traditional view of what worms can eat. After 18 months of trials and research we have got the worms munching through buckets of it each week! On a recent surf trip down the coast I stopped in Broulee for breakfast . They are always my favourite stop. They have little bags of used coffee grounds for the locals to take home and use in their gardens so we grabbed one for our worms. Australia produces 83,000 tonnes of coffee grounds each year so each bag we re use helps. Thank you.

Earlier in the year we started a little community herb garden. It became so popular that we decided it needed an upgrade. Big thanks to for the efficient delivery of the soil. We have installed a worm farm for neighbours to deposit food scraps. In turn they can take what they need from the garden. It has created such a buzz on the street with neighbours supplying seedlings and other plant stuff. It also has a wild flower section for the local bees as inspiration from . We look forward to seeing if this can get other people in Kiama to open up their front lawn area to grow food.
