🐑 Australian Merino producers, we want to hear from you!

An MLA/AWI funded research project investigating merino ewe mortality has started, with the first phase capturing industry wide data around the extent of Merino ewe losses and management practices, through an online industry survey.
Findings will inform on-farm trials investigating the incidence and causes of Merino ewe mortality around the period of lambing, which is starting in 2024.

Meet Winston!

Winston is a happy and healthy young dog, but two weeks ago he was in a critical condition being operated on at Kingston Vet Clinic. He suffered a serious case of ‘bloat’, which escalated to a condition called Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, known as GDV.

What is GDV?

🟦 GDV is when the stomach fills with air and gets so big that it twists around on itself (known as torsion)

🟦 It is life threatening - if the stomach is not deflated quickly the dog may die!

🐶 GDV usually occurs in large breed dogs like Winston, and often these dogs are active and fast eaters.

So what should you look for?

🩺 Vomiting or trying to vomit, looking bloated, painful belly, restlessness or lethargy

Thankfully Winston’s family knew the signs and rushed him to the clinic. An x-ray of Winston’s abdomen showed his stomach had inflated to triple its normal size! Our team jumped into life-saving treatment and Winston was taken into surgery where the torsion was corrected.

After a few days in critical care in the hospital he was happy to finally go home. And now two weeks later we are so glad that Winston is back to his normal goofy self!

T O B Y

A difficult day all round yesterday saying goodbye to this special Pooch. Toby was very loved by his entire family and soon became much loved by all of us! How lucky were we to have Toby spend his last days with us, soon labelling him our clinic pet, with him being 2 steps behind our Vets or nurses the entire time.

Unfortunately it was time for Toby’s family and his vet family to say goodbye. 🐾🌈

Forever in our hearts ❤️
