I want to thank all of you for taking up the cause over the last ten days.

Depending on who you spoke to, Michelangelo was either already gelded and therefore unsuitable for release, unprocessed so we just don’t know, or unavailable because we already gave back 49 (out of 50 promised).

The only ‘official line’ I received was “Horses are not tracked by name. The process of selecting horses for gelding is done through a gate cut – first horses in the pen are the ones gelded” – which is not definitive either way.

Of course, the focus was to free one young mustang, but please consider how much wider your efforts have taken the issues and challenges facing all of America’s wild mustangs - just this one appeal touched more than 100,000 people. That has to be the longer term priority.

I have lost count of the times I have heard the phrase ‘I had no idea’.

I’m no longer staggered by how few people are aware of the plight of mustangs in America – the fact that this year might be the first ever when we have more wild horses in holding pens than running free in the wild – just resolved to grow sufficient awareness to effect a change.

MAN CHARGED OVER HORSE MURDERS
Christopher John Anderson, 49, from Mount Isa, has been charged with one count of wilfully and unlawfully killing 41 horses.

The Longreach community was rocked when the unprecedented massacre was discovered on a property near the town last Thursday.

41 horses including geldings, colts, pregnant mares and mares with foals underfoot were shot in their paddocks on the two thousand hectare property.

The current charge carries a maximum penalty of seven years behind bars.

Queensland Police arrested Anderson yesterday after a week-long investigation.

He did not apply for bail and will appear before Mount Isa Court today.
