A big congratulations are in order for two of our favourite fillies here at Gippsland Veterinary Hospital, with both Victoria and Katherine recently announcing their pregnancies!!🤰🤰🎉🎉😍😍

With maternity leave not too far away, now is the time to see them before we farewell them for a while.

Hopefully during this time you will notice some new faces around the clinics to help us out filling their shoes!

MARE OWNERS, are you waiting for the arrival of one of last seasons creations? Or will be one of the many awaiting for bubs made this season?
Have a giggle at this post shared from McGregor Equine:

MARE CODE OF HONOUR

The mare's secret code of honor is as old as horses themselves and is ultimately the species best kept secret. No mare shall ever produce a foal before it's time.(It's time being determined by the following factors):

1.No foal shall be born until total chaos has been reached by all involved. Your house must be a wreck, your family hungry and desperate for clean clothes, and your social life nonexistent.

2.Midwives must reach the babbling fool status before you foal out. Bloodshot eyes, tangled hair and the inability to form a sentence mean you're getting close.

3.For every bell, beeper, camera or whistle they attach to you, foaling must be delayed by at least one day for each item.

4.Vet check, add a day, internal add three. If you hear the words, "She's nowhere near ready. You'll be fine while I'm away for the weekend," Wait 12 to 16 hours and pop that baby out!

5.Owner stress must be at an all time high! If you are in the care of someone else, ten to fifteen phone calls a day is a sign you're getting close. When you hear the words "I can't take it anymore!" wait three days and produce a foal.

6.You must keep this waiting game interesting. False alarms are necessary! Little teasers such as looking at your stomach, pushing your food around in the bucket and then walking away from it are always good for a rise. Be creative and find new things to do to keep the adrenaline pumping in those who wait.

7.The honor of all horses is now in your hands. Use this time to avenge all of your stable mates. Think about your friend who had to wear that silly costume in front of those people. Hang onto that baby for another day. OH, they made him do tricks too! Three more days seems fair. Late feedings, the dreaded diet, bad haircuts, those awful wormings can also be avenged at this time.

8.If you have fulfilled all of the above and are still not sure when to have this foal, listen to the weather forecast on the radio that has been so generously provided by those who wait. Severe storm warning is what you're waiting for. In the heart of the storm jump into action! The power could go out and you could have the last laugh. You have a good chance of those who wait missing the whole thing while searching for a flashlight that works!

9.Make the most of your interrupted nights. Beg for food each time someone comes into the stable to check you. Your stable mates will love you as the extra goodies fall their way too.

10.Remember, this code of honor was designed to remind man of how truly special horses are. Do your best to reward those who wait with a beautiful filly to carry on the mare code of honor for the next generation of those who wait!

All aboard the baby express!
This lovely lot of ladies all came in together for their pregnancy check scans… and had a 100% strike rate!!
That’s the kind of good news we like to deliver!
It’s going to be a very busy household in around 11 months time 🥳🥳

Our nurse Kelsie has just returned from some further education at Bain Fallon Equine Conference, one of the humans in the PPE suits she assures us is her - although we’d have to check closely!
We also received this pic of apparently the most well behaved patients any vet or nurse has ever met! 🤪

This Gent is taking it nice and easy while in with us having a problematic tooth removed!

Having had some antibiotic treatments for a snotty nose with his regular vet, the runny nose kept returning… a thorough dental exam and some X-rays were taken, showing the culprit to be a damaged and infected tooth.
The troublesome tooth had split, causing packing and packing and packing of food in it over time.
Luckily for this fella he was a very good patient and the tooth successfully removed. With some thorough after care he should be back on track and feeling much better in no time.

He decided he was up and ready to get some love from everyone the second we opened the door! How could we resist that face ❤️

Always interesting to get the men’s (perhaps slightly more sympathetic) perspective when it comes time for the boys to get snipped 😂😂

We couldn’t help but laugh and share this message we received after the girls went out to do said snipping!

The nice weather has made getting the boys snipped a breeze!
This lovely big fella was straight up after his big snip to go watch over his recovering buddies 😂

This lovely lad was thoroughly enjoying his sheath clean and a belly scratch!! 🤭

Sheath cleaning is an important part of maintaining your boys comfort and hygiene.
Dirt, oils and skin cells can build up, becoming quite uncomfortable as well as turn into ‘beans’.
Beans are a term used to describe the accumulation of dirt and muck turning into a firm ball, which then gets stuck in a small pocket near the tip of the horses p***s.
These beans can cause pain, itching, trouble when trying to urinate or infections if left unattended.

Three sizeable beans were removed during this fellas clean up… and as you can see he has decided that’s it’s not such a bad day after all, thoroughly enjoying being centre of attention!

Chevy!
In the recent nasty weather poor Chev managed to cop a knock from some of her housing getting blown in the wild wind.

Her horns copped the brunt of the force which managed to break them right down at their base, despite the strength of the horns, the attachment to the goats skull is surprisingly delicate - which makes this type of injury a real emergency!
Chev’s owners called us immediately, we were able to attend their property to provide Chev with some good meds for pain relief as well as bandage and stabilise her horns, much like a broken limb in people needs to be kept nice and still.
Once this was done Chevy hopped in the car for a trip into the hospital for X-rays to asses the damage, surgery to remove the broken horns and base, flushing the debris out and then getting all stitched back together.
Due to the damage Chev was left with two decent sized cavities into her skull and sinus area under the stitches in her skin - hence her lovely ‘helmet’ that she wears while every thing heals up.
Chev has taken the debacle in her stride and has been a model patient, getting spoilt rotten during her stay.. how could you not!

Suns out…Balls out! 🤭😜✂️✂️
Sunny springs days have been the perfect time for everyone booking their fellas in for the snip!
Have your boys discovered that spring is in the air? Might be a good time to get in touch and book in their appointments (don’t tell them that though!)
