We know dental procedures can become pricey, particularly if they involve removing large numbers of teeth, given the time and effort these procedures require. 🦷

However, the good news is, regular dental cleaning (or scale and polish) not only prevents worse dental disease, but is considerably cheaper than waiting until your pet requires extractions. 🐕

We strongly recommend regular, routine dental scale and polishes to avoid more severe disease. Chat to our staff to learn more about the benefits of regular teeth cleaning.🩺

We were thrilled with the overwhelming response to our recent Small Animal Emergency Medicine seminar with Dr. Phil Judge as our presenter.

Dr Philip Judge has over 30 years experience in the small animal emergency field and was a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at James Cook for 10 years. He has developed training programs, published research, presented internationally, and serves as an examiner for veterinary professionals.

We were proud to have facilitated this event for vets and nurses from across Far North Queensland. It was a day of invaluable learning and knowledge sharing.

It was inspiring to see such a strong turnout, particularly among our nursing team as well as the wider community of nurses in FNQ. Their enthusiasm for professional development is commendable. We believe this seminar was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our local veterinary community and improve emergency care for our patients.

We are excited to see what future collaborations and educational opportunities this event will spark.

As the weather cools, it can be hard to maintain motivation to exercise. We know our dogs benefit from regular exercise, however that doesn’t mean you have to enrol them in agility or take them on long runs. 🐶 Even a daily 30-minute walk, at a pace suited to the age and health of your pet, can do wonders for their (and your) health. 🐾 Rug up to stay as comfortable as possible, including a jacket for your dog if it’s really cool, and get out there with your pooches! 🧥

Oral hygiene is vital for maintaining good overall health. It’s vital dogs have a dental care routine in place to avoid disease and tooth loss. 🐕

Preventative dental care is the key to good oral hygiene. As a general rule, the gold standard for teeth cleaning is daily (or twice daily) brushing with a soft human toothbrush and regular dental scale and polishes. 🦷

Contact our clinic to make a time with one of our nurses to develop a personalised dental care plan for your pet, to ensure their teeth stay clean and healthy for life. 📞

Did you know we offer both fresh and frozen artificial insemination (AI) services for your breeding mares?

The year is flying by, and breeding season will soon be upon us. Our veterinarians are experienced in equine artificial insemination services, assisting your mare through the entire process from the initial ultrasounds, through to cycle management and post AI flushing.

Once your mare is prepared for the AI process, we can communicate with your semen supplier on your behalf to ensure the timely arrival of samples to meet the window of opportunity with your mare.

To register your interest for the upcoming season, please contact our Malanda or Charters Towers clinics (whichever is your closest) to discuss further.

One of the only things cats like less than having their belly rubbed, is having their teeth checked. 🐾 It can be hard to know the state of your cat’s teeth, as apart from yawns, they very rarely ‘bare’ their teeth. One way to check, is to gently push their lip up on one side with your thumb when they are relaxed. This will give you a glimpse of the outside surface of the teeth and gums. 🦷

If you aren’t sure, one of our friendly nurses would be happy to show you how. 🩺

Dental issues are incredibly common in dogs. It’s estimated that more than 80% of dogs over the age of three have dental disease. 🦷

One sign of dental disease is rubbing or pawing at the mouth. This can be a sign of discomfort or pain, and should always be investigated by a veterinarian. Another sign to look out for is reluctance to chew or crunch food, particularly hard kibble. 🐕

If you suspect your dog might have dental disease, give the clinic a call today. 📞

Recent seasons have created ideal conditions for worm proliferation, posing substantial challenges for many producers. Effective worm management requires strategic planning, particularly given the lack of new anthelmintic on the market.

Join the online webinar, Tuesday, 13th August 2024, for expert advice from Paul Meibusch on minimizing the impact of worms in your goat herds.

We recently saw one of our patients. This patient has had routine dental care for nearly her entire life.

Her last dental procedure was 12 months ago. She has no ulcers and very well-maintained molars, which makes the dental process faster, requiring less time with the gag and less sedation.

Having routine dental check ups for your horse is important. Contact our team on 07 4096 7500 to book it in.

If your cat is ten years of age or above, their dietary needs may be a-changing! 🐱🍽️

Older cats can start to become more sedentary, so they may require a switch to a weight maintenance diet to prevent unhealthy weight gain.

If your cat is developing chronic kidney disease (which occurs in 30-40% of cats over 10 years of age), we may also recommend a senior diet or prescription kidney support diet, which have reduced levels of protein and salt and added omega-3 fatty acids for organ, brain, and joint support.

For personalised advice on the best dietary options for your senior cat, consult our feline-friendly veterinary team. 🐾💡

If your pet has reached senior years at eight years of age and above, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for any symptoms of cognitive (mental) decline.

Symptoms of cognitive decline in pets can include changes in sleeping and waking patterns, the loss of learned behaviours (such as toilet training) or appearing vague or confused. 🐶🐱

If you notice any obvious behavioural changes in your pet, it’s a good idea to book them for prompt general health check-up with our veterinary team. Additionally, we can also make smart recommendations on proactive brain support measures for any senior pet. 💪

On July 1st, the first soil was turned on the development of a new purpose-built premises for the Atherton branch of Tableland Veterinary Service. After several years of planning, this was truly an exciting day for us all. The project is being developed by present and past business partners, present and past veterinary staff and family members of Tableland Veterinary Service. The development is located on a beautiful two-acre block on the quieter outskirts of Atherton, on the road to Herberton opposite NRMA Atherton Tablelands Holiday Park and Tajenka Orchid Nursery.

The needs for veterinary care continue to change, as do the needs of our clientele. This is not limited to just Atherton but industry wide. As the population of the Tablelands grows, the expectations for the level of veterinary care are raised. The development of the new Atherton clinic is in response to these changes, with the scope of works allowing for expansion as required for services such as extra imaging modalities (MRI and CT scanning) as well as the possibility of dedicated post operative physiotherapy facilities. However, it is not just limited to our furry or feathered patients. Accessibility has been one of the forefronts for the new development including purpose-built waiting areas and reception desks.

We are excited to work with Shane Marshall Building, a local builder with commercial building experience, who has brought a wealth of expertise, support and enthusiasm to the project. Our thanks also extend to Peter Dall'Alba for his excellent attention to detail and patience with the long drafting process. Thank you as well to all of the local trades and sub-contractors who helped with the tender process.

We look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead offered by this development to all of our clientele present and future.

This July, our team is calling for your most adorable photos of your pet staying warm this winter. We’d love to see pictures of pets tucked into cosy spots or wearing their snuggest winter woollies. We’d also welcome photos of true Arctic breeds (such as huskies) in their element, enjoying the cold conditions.

16/07/2024

Hip pain can occur in dogs of almost any age due to injuries, developmental joint issues such as hip dysplasia, or the development of osteoarthritis.

Whilst some pets with hip pain may show an obvious hindlimb lameness, others will show more subtle symptoms of discomfort, such as a bunny-hopping run, stiffness after rest, a loss of gluteal or thigh muscle size, or an unwillingness to be handled around their back legs. 🐶💪

If your dog is demonstrating any of these symptoms, or if it is eight years of age or older, we recommend a joint health check-up with one of our knowledgeable vets. 🩺

Our Malanda and Charters Towers clinics are equipped to assist you in selecting and preparing mares leading up to and during breeding season.

Follicle scans assist our team and yourself as owners to know where your mare is at within her cycle. This allows you to plan your breeding steps for your mare, knowing when the best time to breed her will be.

Have problem breeder or ‘barren’ mare in your paddock that you're not sure is worth spending money on? There may be simple factors at play that can be economically corrected to greatly increase the chance of a successful pregnancy. Rarely, a severe problem may be present which can be diagnosed to reveal realistic expectations for your mare.

For more information on our equine reproductive services, please feel free to contact our Malanda clinic on (07) 4096 7500 or our Charters Towers clinic on (07) 4754 7400

This winter, all cats will appreciate the provision of a warm, sheltered sleeping nook, whether in a snug igloo bed indoors, a spot by the heater, or even being tucked up in bed with you! 🐱❄️

If your cat is sparsely furred (e.g., a rex or sphynx cat), it will also benefit from either a well-fitted feline jumper or a thick blanket to snuggle under. Ensure any clothing or bedding provided for your pet is only washed using low-irritant, pet-safe laundry liquid without added dyes, SLS, or synthetic fragrances.

For more advice on keeping your pet comfortable and healthy this winter, consult our snug-savvy team! 🐾🛏️

Are you missing your fur baby?

I have been found near Lake Eacham. I am all okay, just looking for my mum and dad. My microchip details are linked to the breeder who has been contacted but no luck yet - a good reminder to update microchip details when you get a new puppy.

If you’ve ever had back, neck, hip, or knee pain, you’ll understand that unmanaged arthritis pain in senior pets can be a real quality of life issue.

Fortunately, there are many options we can offer for relief of osteoarthritis discomfort in pets, including omega-3 fatty acid supplements, joint mobility support injections, anti-inflammatory pain relief medications, and newer monoclonal antibody injections that can reduce chronic joint pain.

For recommendations on the most suitable joint health support options for your senior pet, consult our veterinary team – we’re mad about good mobility! 🐶🩺

Caring for the needs of all animals for over 60 years

Tableland Veterinary Service is committed to delivering world class, compassionate veterinary care, training, advice and research, for all animal species. From beef cattle through to pets and injured wildlife, our expert team provide only the highest standard of veterinary care.

An Atherton Tablelands veterinary clinic started operation in Malanda in 1952, and was originally operated as a branch practice from Townsville (it was the only veterinary clinic north of Townsville for many years). Tableland Veterinary Service officially began operation in 1977. Bill Tranter and Ian Hosie began their current partnership in 1978 and have worked together as business partners for over 40 years. More recently, directors Frank Condon (2002), Tamara Olley-Dredge (2011), Mick Ruppin (2012), Ryan Cockrem (2012), Stephanie Williams (2017) and John Hosie (2017) have joined the partnership. Over 40 years the practice has grown to include six clinics in Weipa, Atherton, Ravenshoe, Charters Towers, Malanda and Gordonvale. Although the practice has grown and now includes up to 60 staff, spread over 2000 kms, we are still a close ‘family’ and enjoy the intimacy of a smaller clinic.

Since 1977 more than fifty veterinarians have worked in the practice supported over the years by many dedicated nurses, receptionists, office staff and technicians. Hundreds of veterinary students have also undertaken part of their veterinary training within the practice. In recent years, TVS has become intimately involved in the training of veterinary students from James Cook University. This has helped our veterinarians to develop their skills and knowledge and makes TVS a unique centre of excellence for clients and their animals.
