Meet Pepper and Pixie 🐶 they are brother and sister and were very well behaved for their vet visit today. These two cuties came in today for their 3rd puppy vaccinations. 🤎
It is an exciting time when a new puppy is welcomed to the family but it is important to give them the best start possible and we are here to help. We offer a free puppy check to go through vaccinations, training, puppy school and what you should be feeding your puppy.

Summer is a great time for spending more time outdoors with your pets, however there are some common summertime hazards to be aware of, to ensure your pets safety and health - especially during the festive season.
Heat stress occurs when the pet’s body overheats due to hot temperatures and excessive activity. Some pets can be more prone to suffering from heat stress, including the flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds, and those pets that are overweight or have long or heavy coats.
Tips to reduce the risk of heat stress are to exercise pets during the cool of the early morning or evening – this will also avoid walking your pet on hot pavement, which can lead to burnt paws, which can be an incredibly painful cause of lameness.
It is important to ensure that pets have access to fresh, cool water and a cool, shady place to rest, out of the sun during the heat of the day. Pets should also never be left inside vehicles, as the temperature inside cars can climb rapidly, leading to potentially fatal heatstroke.
Summertime also means that snakes, spiders and paralysis ticks may be more prevalent – which can mean an increased risk to your pet, and if affected, urgent veterinary attention is required. During warming weather, snakes may be active in areas of bushland or long grass, so take care when exercising your pet. The signs of snake bite can include weakness, wobbliness and collapse – and urgent veterinary attention is required. Spider bites can cause localised pain and irritation, however, the more venomous spiders such as red back spiders or funnel web spiders can cause neurological signs such as weakness and muscle tremors.
The upcoming festive period also reminds us to not feed certain food items to pets. If enjoying a barbeque or meal, don’t be tempted to feed leftovers to your pets. Onions can be toxic to pets, and fatty meat off-cuts can be a risk for pancreatitis – which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in pets. Cooked bones can be a choking hazard and can also cause gut blockages and perforation. For more information on foods that should not be fed to dogs, view our article.
If you do need advice as to whether your pet needs veterinary attention, give your vet a call - they are best placed to let you know if your pets needs to see a veterinarian, and in many cases can save you from a lot of unnecessary worry. There are a few things to remember though; always try to plan ahead by making sure you have your preferred local veterinary practices number in a handy place and familiarise yourself with their opening times.
Importantly over the festive season remember that vets need a break as well, and subsequently, some local veterinary services may be reduced. "Veterinarians have not only faced the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic this year, but also continue to be affected by long-term workforce issues including low remuneration, poor mental wellness and an overall relative veterinary shortage due to high rates of attrition from the profession”, says Dr Warwick Vale, AVA President.
The Australian Veterinary Association is asking all pet owners to be thoughtful, respectful and patient towards veterinarians as they deliver the necessary care to your pets. Pet owners can assist both their pet and their vet by being prepared over the holiday period - by checking your local vet clinic’s opening hours, noting the location of your nearest after-hours emergency vet hospital, and in all cases - ringing ahead to alert the vet practice that you are on your way. Be prepared for longer than usual wait times at veterinary practices, particularly veterinary emergency hospitals as they will be busy over the festive season.

How awesome does Hammr look with her summer body!
Hammr has lost a total of 3.2kg in just over 2 months. She came in initially for limping and after we started her on the Satiety diet and she started to lose weight her owner let us know that the limping had resolved!

🦷Lou Lou was in for a Free Dental Check recently and we found some dental disease with a few problem teeth that were loose and causing her a bit of discomfort.
📆Lou Lou's owner swiftly booked her in with Dr David for the procedure.
🦷Teeth are often tricky for owners to look at home so all our dental procedures get a comprehensive digital chart with before & after photos emailed to the owner.
💕Lou Lou was back for her 1 week post op check - all the extraction sites have healed and her Mum is going to keep on top of it all now with dental preventatives at home!

Meet Peppa, Dr. David's 11 year old Dachshund who we diagnosed with a bladder tumour 4 months ago.
We promptly started chemotherapy every 2-3 weeks and just today she finished her last dose 🥰

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (or BOAS for short!) refers to a group of conditions that result from the body conformation of breeds of dogs such as Pugs, English Bulldogs, Pekingese & French Bulldogs! Due to their shortened faces, it doesn't allow much room for air to pass freely through their nose and throat!
🐶The good news is, we have skilled Vets on our team who can perform BOAS surgery so our little squished-nosed friends can live out their days breathing easier.

1st photo - Dr. Emma has performed a widening of the nares to allow those nostrils to take in more air!
2nd photo - this Pugs elongated soft palate has made it quite crowded in the back of her throat. This has been resected to allow more air to pass through into her lungs.

Meet Frankie! A super cute Staffy at only 2 and a half years old came in to see us recently to have a lump on his leg checked.
After having a look under the microscope we saw some suspicious cells and advised getting the lump removed and sent off to lab to be analysed.
The lump came back as a malignant Mast Cell tumour but luckily after some extra scans we found that it hadn't spread anywhere 💕💕

David is the Head Vet at our clinic 🐾
🗓 He works Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and every second Saturday morning.
🌟Who is David when he's not being a Vet?
Dr David leads the Marcoola Vet Surgery Team. David made the move ‘down under’ from the UK in 2012. He loves the laid back lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast and can often be found - coffee in hand - at the beach walking his sausage dog Peppa. His other passions outside of work are scuba diving and underwater photography.
🌟Education
David graduated from the University of Liverpool in England in 2008 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science. He is also currently completing a postgraduate Master of Veterinary Studies externally with Murdoch University in his spare time. David has over 12 years' experience and brings his incredible medical knowledge to our practice.
🌟Special Interests
David is passionate about all areas of veterinary medicine and surgery, with a special interest in ultrasonography and cardiology. His interest in medicine has driven him to do his post graduate Masters of Veterinary Studies. Dr David also has a special interest in Ultrasonography from performing pregnancy ultrasounds to diagnostic ultrasounds. David's thoroughness paired with his calm, kind manner are fast seeing him become a well-loved veterinarian with our clients.
