This cat was lost for about a week before he returned home with this very bad tail injury. It was likely caused by a bite/pull injury, causing the skin layer to die off which allowed it to become infected and infested with maggots. Tail amputation was the only option for this fellow! Luckily, he will still be around to tell the tale :)

Having a look at your pet’s gums regularly is a great way to be able to see any changes early on. Not only will it alert you to anaemia (when the gums are paler than normal or even white (like these ones were!)), it lets you know about their hydration status (they should be moist and slippery). We are still seeing the odd rat bait case, so definitely a good idea to keep checking 😊 It’s also a great opportunity to check their pearly whites!

A dog had a lump a while ago and it went away by itself – almost forgotten about! The lump then came back and began weeping clear fluid. We underwent surgery to remove the lump and explore the cause. The "lump" was in fact just the body's reaction to this huge thorn we found (a foreign object). The thorn was penetrating the abdomen and could have caused major damage. One lucky dog that we took him to surgery! 🐶

A juicy abscess for you all. This pup felt much better with the pressure of this off of her head! (Disclaimer: the bruising and swelling is normal and associated with the abscess and she made a full recovery).

November is Senior Pet Month! A pet is considered senior is when they’re older than seven (approximately, it can depend on their breed).

As our pets age, it’s important to consider their changing needs and keep them comfortable. We recommend a check up every 6 months which will allow us to detect any age-related problems early on. Age is not a disease, and lots of changes noted as our pets get older are able to be treated e.g. slowing down might be arthritis, changes in appetite, thirst and weight could be internal organ problems and excessive drooling could be dental issues.

Do you have a golden oldie that is due a check up?

We don’t know about you guys, but we hate splinters. They are always getting under our skin ;)

This sweet girl had a sharp start to her morning when this substantial shard of wood went into her foot. She had it removed surgically (so we could control the bleeding and so she could not feel it coming out) and placed a drain to let any small splinters out and allow wound flushing.

She walked out much more comfortable and made a full recovery back to soundness over the next few weeks :)

Many of us have had the wonderful experience of finding our dog eating something that they really shouldn’t be! When it has been something that will cause them harm (e.g. ratsak) or something that will cause a blockage in their guts (e.g. corn cob, sock, tampon etc) it is sometimes best and safest to get it out of the stomach via a vomit rather that wait and do a large surgery/life saving treatments a few hours/days later. If the shouldn'thavebeeneaten item was ingested within 2 hours of presentation, we can induce vomiting with an emetic drug. This pupper was feeling a bit sad after his vomit inducing, but it was a far better option than exploratory surgery later on!

Pestivirus causes abortion, ill-thrift in young animals, diarrhoea and respiratory disease. We have been testing a lot for it recently. Any poor looking stock should be tested! Read all about it here :)

Aural Haematoma (ear blood clot)
At the moment we are seeing a few aural haematomas. These form when the pet has been scratching their ear or shaking their head vigorously (due to ear infections, mites, inflammation or foreign objects in the ear canal). This results in the blood vessels in the ears being ruptured and they leak (creating a blood blister of the ear). When they are very large (like this one was), the pressure is immense and surgery was the best option for this boy. Large sutures and padding are used to close the layers and stop blood filling back up in the pockets.
If caught early, surgery is not necessary and we can treat medically.
