The Keeping Cats Safe at Home Education Program was recently launched at schools across the New South Wales Northern Rivers region 🐱

Over a busy few days, the program educated over 500 students from six different schools in Byron Shire Council, Tweed Shire Council, and Kyogle Council about keeping their cats safe at home.

The education presentation taught students how to care for cats and the importance of desexing, how to keep cats safe at home, and the impacts cats have on our native wildlife. Through engaging and interactive activities, students learned about cats' unique behaviours and how to be responsible cat owners 🏡

RSPCA NSW also visited local cat rescue groups collaborating with the project including Friends of the Pound, Pets For Life Animal Shelter Billinudgel, and Animal Welfare League NSW - North Coast.

Future visits to schools in the New South Wales Northern Rivers region will be led by local councils to continue to promote the education program 📑

A BIG THANKYOU to everyone who donated blankets, towels and bedding to the Animal Welfare League.
They put the call out recently for warm blankets as winter is here and they have little souls to look after.
Kemps Creek is a long way from Mt Colah but it was great to meet the amazing staff and see all the doggies going for walks 💕

Have you taken the pledge?

Sophie Putland was a bright, passionate and dedicated young veterinarian who tragically lost her life to su***de.

Sophie’s family experienced first-hand the pain and sorrow of the mental health crisis in the vet industry and their goal is simple - they want to ensure vet staff have all the mental health support they need to reduce the incidents that contribute to this unacceptable rate of su***de.

They also want Sophie's Legacy to raise awareness and inspire meaningful change within the industry. They don’t want to see another vet’s or vet staff’s family experience the same anguish and heartbreak they have since losing their beloved Sophie. The family have launched a National Education Campaign to honour Sophie.

How can you help?
You’re helping by just being aware of the mental health issues within the veterinary industry. You can also help by keeping the following in mind when you visit the vet:

On average, every 12 weeks, a vet in Australia takes their own life.

A vet is four times more likely to take their life, compared to the general population.

Negative interactions and client abuse are major contributors to the poor mental health of vets and staff.

Take the pledge today!

✅ agree to raise any concerns about the costs of your pet’s care in a respectful manner with vet clinic staff.

✅ agree to be respectful of your vet and vet staff and be mindful of the demands they face each day.

✅ agree to share the pledge you have taken and in doing so become an advocate for better mental health for vets and vet staff across Australia

TAKE THE PLEDGE, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. 👉 https://sophieslegacy.com/campaigns/only-human

TOYS & BLANKETS NEEDED 📢

Our Kemps Creek shelter is running very low on blankets, dog toys and cat toys 😢. Coming into winter, our beautiful dogs deserve to be snug and cosy whilst they are waiting for their forever homes ❤️.

If you have any spare blankets, towels/sheets or dog/cat toys that you're willing to donate, we would graciously accept them! Donations can be dropped off at our shelter (located at 1605 Elizabeth Drive, Kemps Creek 2178 NSW - turn right after driving into shelter gates to go to the shelter) between 10am and 3:30pm any day of the week.

Please note: we aren't able to accept pillows or toys with batteries for safety reasons.

Really important to know, especially if you’ve got a large breed dog.

Meet Murphy, a (very big) St Bernard puppy!

Recently, Murphy became very sick very quickly and was rushed to SASH Adelaide Emergency. She underwent emergency surgery to repair a gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) - a common and life-threatening condition that is fatal without veterinary intervention

GDV is one of the most common emergencies we see at SASH, generally after hours as these cases deteriorate quickly over a few hours. A GDV is common in large breed dogs and is caused by a build-up of gas trapped in the stomach, which ultimately causes the stomach to twist. This twisting causes a cut off of blood supply in-conjunction with a large swelling of the stomach that increases in size, leading to compression against vital organs like the lungs and heart. It is as painful as it sounds.
If you picture yourself drinking a large amount of fizzy drink, in a short period of time and you’re not able to burp- how would you feel? Imagine the bloated feeling, not going away, not passing through the other end. Over a short period of time, you’d feel very uncomfortable.

Animals with a GDV will show obvious signs of a bloated stomach and they usually become quite unsettled, start panting and retch (try to vomit but nothing comes up).
When Murphy arrived at SASH she was unsettled, had a bloated stomach, was panting and had an elevated heart rate. Upon stabilization with the Emergency team, she was taken for surgery with Dr Andrew Dunn. The procedure that Dr Andrew performed both untwisted and decompressed Murphy’s stomach and a gastropexy was also performed. A gastropexy is a preventive procedure where the stomach is tacked to the side of the abdomen to prevent GDV. This can be performed via key-hole surgery and is an elective procedure, which can be done at any age. It is recommended in large breed, deep chested dogs, like St Bernards, Great Danes, Weimaraners, standard Poodles, Dobermans, but can occur in any breed!

This emergency couldn’t be avoided, and Murphy’s owners were very pleased with their earlier decision to get pet insurance. They were able to utilize the service of GapOnly- a company partnered with insurers and hospitals like SASH, to ease the stress of finances and focus on their puppy getting better after a very distressing situation. They’re super grateful to the SASH Adelaide team for saving Murphy’s life, but we have to say, we’re super grateful to them for doing only the best for their Murphy Brown.

Murphy made a full recovery and is back living her best life!

A very timely reminder these school holidays.

You wallaby careful on the roads these school holidays!

Our Taronga Wildlife Hospitals are urging motorists to be mindful as they often see a spike in animals injured from road accidents and admitted to our care during school holidays periods.

Please be cautious particularly when driving at dusk or dawn, which is when macropods like wallabies and kangaroos tend to be active along roads. If you are driving during the night, please be aware of our native nocturnal species like wombats, bandicoots and possums.

If you come across injured wildlife, time is of the essence so it is important that the animal gets assessed by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If you can’t take it to a nearby Taronga Wildlife Hospital or vet, please contact local wildlife rescue services for assistance.

Remember Kitty, the feral kitten needing a foster home?

This little legend allowed himself to be “caught” and has quickly adapted to his new life.

All his vet work has been done and he’s already got his sights on the human’s bed at his foster home.

We’re now sussing out who our next rescue will be. 🙀

I’m a member of a group of locals who are trying to reduce the size of a cat colony in Hornsby.

We’ve trapped, desexed and released a number of young cats. Ideally they would have gone to foster carers but they were all full.

We have a team of people who feed these cats multiple times a day to avoid impact on wildlife.

This little munchkin escaped our best attempts at capture but has become a very sweet and friendly girl.

We want to trap her and have her desexed REALLY soon before she becomes pregnant.

However, as she is so friendly already, it would be a shame to have to put her back in the “wild” where she will succumb to ticks, cars, illnesses etc.

We need you!

Could you care for this kitty so we can find her a good home? Do you know of someone who might be able to help?

Food, vet fees, vaccinations and all support would be provided.

All we need is someone to show this little girl some love, a warm and sheltered bed and introduce her to the joys of being a much loved pet.

We will do the rest.

Please share 💕🌻

I’m sure this little cuddle bunny has a special home somewhere

A 1-eyed, 3-legged, affectionate princess 👸

"Hello, my name is Cali. I might have just 1 eye 👁️ but I will quickly seek you out so I can sit in your lap and make cute noises 🎶. I have been told I am extremely sweet and affectionate and I'll happily walk over to greet you, with my 3 little legs. Yes, I'm also a tripod but it doesn't slow me down too much.

I do also like to be brushed, especially under my chin.

I really love people and hanging out with my human friends. But I get a little bit angry around my fellow felines because I deserve ALL THE PATS and they shouldn't be shared. That's what I think anyway... So I am looking for a new home please where I am the only pet. I hope to meet you soon." - love Cali

Cali is 4 years old and her adoption fee of $230 includes desexing, vaccination, microchipping and you'll be eligible for free lifetime registration.

If you have a "furry-friend free home" and would like to adopt Cali, please call our shelter on 8777 4445 or email [email protected] Do you want to adopt but have pets at home? Contact us to book an appointment to meet our other cats 🐱

Have I got the best job, or what? Meet Brian. He’s 8 weeks old. You’re welcome.

While this picture may be funny in one way, in another it is not. The cat situation of over breeding is of great concern with cats breeding out of control in many suburbs in Sydney.
Dont be part of the problem, please desex your cats ( male and female) and keep your cats in doors especially at night. It has been shown that indoor cats live longer, healthier lives.
Pension cards holders can obtain subsidised desexing vouchers to desex their cats at our local vets working with AWL in western Sydney.
