When you’re walking with friends to their house in Katoomba and see a tree full of cherries being absolutely smashed by birds, you knock on the door and ask if you can pick some.

After the successes of my hand made wreaths at Street Feast I have made some Christmas themed ones. With the festive season right around the corner and lots of fun and parties coming up, these are great to wear to show off your Christmas spirit. Also can be hung on the door or used as a table decorations.

The kids wanted plums for school. It’s winter… lucky for them I have jars of preserved fruit, plums being one of them. Quite tangy. Nice with yogurt and a splash of maple syrup.

When my house accidentally looks Instagram perfect. I didn’t even try.
This is a big deal for me as I’m a terrible house keeper. Family of 5, with 3 kids, it can be a lot. So sitting down to have a cuppa and looking up to see this made me happy. I hope it makes you happy as well.
The flowers are wild cherry plum from the side of the road.

Aw yess. Lemon time.
A call out on the local buy/swap/sell page to see if anyone had to much fruit on their trees had me with bags of lemons within an hour.

A winter chore that has not been done for a few years in our new house. Time for me to save the gutters from the wisteria and banksia rose.

Mushroom workshop at today. A fun and free event where we inoculated logs with shiitake mycelium, where they will be used in a permaculture farm system.

Oh and also I made sauerkraut again. It took a lot longer to ferment in this cold weather. And the cabbage wasn’t very sweet so the kraut has a distinct flavor.
I have more on the go. With super sweet red and normal cabbage.

Remember those olives I picked? Well they have been soaking in batches of fresh water for a bit over 2 weeks. Today I made a brine for them to wallow in for a month or 2.
I have a 20L bucket of them.
Wish them luck.

Sometimes we toss the semi healthy cupcakes out and it’s all go for chocolate, sugar and icing. Requested by the kids.

That’s the last step of the rose hip and hawthorn syrup.
This sweet and vitamin C rich concoction is beloved in my household. Especially in winter then the kids make a hot drink with it. We also pour it over porridge, pancakes and crumpets. It’s my very own creation.
Here it is just after pouring boiling hot water into bottles. They are upside down to scold the lid.

And there you have it. A whole basket of slippery Jack Mushrooms. My daughter and I picked them, I peeled them, removed the spores of the older ones, soaked in salt water any that had grubs in them, cut them all up, in the dehydrator for 15 hours at 50 degrees. Not quite one jar of dried mushie’s.
They have a very strong smell and I look forward to putting some in stew.

These crab apples are da bomb. Sweet, sour and a little bitter. Red flesh all the way through. Big enough to nibble on, and big enough to make prepping them for preserves easy.
