Parasite Prevention has improved dramatically over the last decade.

Gone are the days of daily tableting or dousing your pet in a foul smelling spray every week or so.

Why is it so important though?
Fleas, ticks and worms have the potential to give our pets serious illnesses if not prevented.

Flea infestation can lead to severe skin disorders and infections or anaemia.
Ticks can lead to progressive weakness, difficulty breathing and even paralysis.
Worms can lead to scours, vomiting, weight loss and even death.

Prevention is better than a cure so it is advised to have your pet on prevention all year round. Fleas can survive in warm homes and ticks can still be present in the environment over winter. Worms can continue to grow inside your pet over colder months as well.

For flea and tick prevention in dogs, you can administer monthly or quarterly tasty chewable tablets; for cats and dogs, you can apply topical drops or veterinary-strength repellent collars.

There are so many options these days with one to suit everyone so pop in and have a chat with our friendly nurses to get the right fit for you and your pet. Tuesday-Friday 9am-1pm

PUPPY VACCINATIONS 💉

Biscuit came in this week for his second vaccination.

Vaccinations save lives by protecting your puppy from serious and life threatening diseases, with minimal side effects. It also assists them build their own immunity.

The vaccines cover the 5 most common diseases which are:
• Parvovirus, Hepatitis and Distemper (covered in the C3 vaccine)
• Parainfluenza and Bordatella bronchiseptica (covered in the ‘canine cough’ vaccine)

Our vaccine protocol is:
• First vaccine at 6-8 weeks old.
• Second vaccine at 10-12 weeks old.
• Third vaccine 4 weeks after the second

❗️During this time period, it’s very important to only socialise your puppy with dogs who are up to date with their vaccinations. 2 weeks after their last vaccine your pup is ready to take on the world❗️

Call us on 03 5852 4646 to book in your pups vaccinations Tuesday-Friday 9am-1pm

***On average, every 12 weeks, a vet in Australia will take their own life.***

***A vet is 4 times more likely to take their own life compared to the general population.***

These are very scary, concerning and unacceptable statistics.

Sophie’s Legacy was set up in 2021 by the family of Sophie Putland, a veterinarian, who died by su***de after being bullied by an angry pet owner.

They have launched the “We’re Only Human” campaign - a national campaign urging people to be kind to veterinary staff.

The most common issue veterinary staff have identified as causing widespread mental illness is client abuse. Other issues like burnout and under resourcing were also identified.

We stand alongside Sophie’s parents, Garry and Kate, her brothers Tom and Oliver and all of our veterinary colleagues nationwide in asking you to recognise that “We’re Only Human”.

More information for both veterinary staff AND clients can be found at www.sophieslegacy.com

Be kind, be mindful and be respectful. ❤️

It’s all fun and games until some bunny gets hurt. 🐣 🐰 🍫

So here are some EASTER SAFETY TIPS.

* Keep those Easter eggs away from the dogs as they contain theobromine and caffeine which can be harmful if ingested.

* Easter lillies are very common however they are VERY toxic to cats and can cause rapid kidney failure.

* Hot cross buns are a hazard as they normally contain either sultanas/raisins or chocolate - both of which are harmful to dogs.

* Easter grass and toys may look pretty in baskets but can cause choking and blockages when ingested. You are better to use tissue paper.

* table scraps are usually in abundance when there’s celebrations but these are generally fatty or poisonous to dogs so be sure to keep strong and not give in to slipping them off the table and make sure the bins are secure as well.

Should you have any concerns regarding your pets over Easter, be sure to call our Teletriage team who will be there to support you and link you with the vets if needed.

Call 03 5852 4646.

I don’t really have a ‘least favourite’, yes, euthanasia’s and seeing our clients loose their loved ones is terribly sad. But the word euthanasia means ‘good death’ and being able to offer our patients a peaceful end, surrounded by their family should never be seen as a ‘bad’ thing.

STAY ALERT WITH SNAKES 🐍

Snakes are currently being very active, making the most of the last of the warm weather before hibernation, so our furry friends are at risk.

What signs do you look for?

If you see a snake near your pet, DO NOT wait for signs to show. Call us immediately on (03) 5852 4646.

When no signs are apparent, we can run tests to assist in determining if envenomation has occurred to ensure anti-venin is administered ASAP.

Did you know that studies show 63% of pet cats and 59.3% of pet dogs are overweight or obese!

These conditions are linked to a variety of diseases including (but not limited to):
* diabetes
* arthritis
* osteoarthritis
* high blood pressure
* skin issues
* neoplasia

Studies also show that overweight or obese pets have a shorter life than their leaner counterparts.

Most of the time, obesity is due to “too much love” from their owners. Treats, tidbits, table scraps and the likes should be taken out of their total feed quantity for the day rather than added on top.

Some practical suggestions for weight loss include:
* reducing the calories
* increasing exercise
* set targets and monitor progress

We are more than happy to help with a weight loss program for your pet. Nurse and vet consults are available should you be concerned about your pets weight. Call us on 5852 4646 anytime between 9am-1pm on Tuesday-Friday.

Below is our weight loss champions - Benny and Harley! Their parents managed to drop multiple kilos off BOTH dogs over 4-6weeks! It’s all about being fully committed to your pets program. Congratulations guys for being our star pupils 🌟 🏆
