You're not alone when it comes to dog behavior. Sometimes people feel like problems aren't 'big enough' to ask for help - but they don't have to be big in order to be important to fix.

30/03/2024

Getting outside in the good weather with your dog sounds like a great idea - but dog parks are so crowded with everyone else who had the same idea. You don't have to go to the dog park to have fun with your dog, though!

Understanding their unique needs, from security to health and routine, is vital for their happiness.
Just like us, dogs have their off days and that is OK!
Being patient and empathetic helps us create a loving environment. Let's be attentive pawrents, ensuring each furry member leads a happy, fulfilling life having their individual needs met!

REALITY OF TODAYS WORLD WE LIVE IN 🥲

Photo isn’t new but tragically it is still happening everyday and getting worse 🥲

“I’m moving I can’t take my dog with me”
“The baby is allergic”
“I am too busy for him”
“I don’t have time to train him”
“My new partner dosent like dogs”
“ I’m going on holiday and can’t afford to board him”
“He’s old and getting sick”
“I got a new puppy and he dosent like it”
“He barks to much and digs my yard”
“I didn’t know how big he would grow “
“I’m pregnant “
”My landlord doesn’t want dogs”
This. ….
This is where your dog ends up. I’m tired of peoples excuses I’m tired of dogs ending up dead in shelter floor I’m tired.
A dog is a lifetime responsibility.
A commitment of 10+ years. That dog that you sent to the dog pound for whatever excuse ,trusted you and loved you. No excuses I don’t want to hear it.
Think about this twice before you give a small insignificant excuse as to why you have to give up your dog."

Please note
We are a rescue NOT a shelter 👍
Rescues save dogs from these places but we just can’t save them all !

If they were not there in the first place we would not be needed !!!

Be better Do better people !

This is one of those behaviours that dogs show us that can be very misread.
Affection ❓Greeting ❓Stress ❓
Not all licking is appeasement licking....appeasement licking is usually paired with other stress signals or calming signals and I know that may be tricky for some to notice.

Licking is completely normal for dogs. It can be a healthy and socially acceptable behaviour between other dogs. It is relaxing, soothing and can be displayed for many reasons.
However appeasement licking can also be shown to other dogs, even ones they know and live with.

Licking can be used as a greeting, a show of affection and can also be a sign of a deep bond, seeking more information and tasting.....so absolutely your dog can lick you as a sign of affection.....there is no question of that.🙂

However...sometimes others can misconstrue or misread these signals.

If you are in any doubt over why your dog licks either you or another dog...video the interaction.
Watch that video and look for tell tale signs of stress (some are mentioned in the graphic).

One of the worst feelings in the world is when I have to inform someone that those certain types of "kisses" do not come from a place of affection... but can be from a place of fear, mistrust and stress.

Don't wait for the bark.💥
Unfortunately too many people only react to their own dogs reactivity when there is a bark.
A bark is just an audible sign of a reaction but there are many other signs given before that bark and when we don't recognise those signs, guess what happens ?....Barking, Lunges, Spins, Jumps and a dog unable to control their own emotions.
There is a LOT that is shown before the bark....even if it is very fast, it is still shown.
So why is it so important to know the unique signals and changes in posture and body language your dog shows ?
So you can STOP the escalation....and yes, even stop the barking from occurring in the first place.
Barking is often at the END of a longer chain of events.
First is usually (not always) a hard stare, a fixation.....THAT is a reaction.
It is not audible but it is often the first sign your dog has changed their emotional state....they ARE reacting.

A change in ear position IS a reaction.
Puling harder on the lead IS a reaction.
A lengthening of the neck/leaning in IS a reaction.
A wrinkled face IS a reaction.......use that information!

Remember a reaction is a change in their emotional state.....and those non verbal signs are a reaction.

A bark is just a reaction we recognise more.

Imagine how we can help our dogs with their reactivity if we started to recognise all those other changes and escalations in their emotional states as easily as we recognise a bark.....

Belly rubs can mean a whole lot more than we think.
Flopping on the ground in front of us, showing their belly and wanting rubs may not be what your dog is saying at all.

Generally speaking.....tongues licking noses or poking out, ears flat and back or tight against head, stiff posture with paws tucked in tight can all be signs your dog may not enjoying that rub on the belly.

Please don't feel badly that you may recognise your dog shows some of these signs when you give a belly rub as many people don't know these changes in body language.

Dogs are individuals first, and noticing patterns in your dog's behavior is the first step to changing it.

24/03/2024
22/03/2024

A very simple solution✅
The solution to many issues is to prevent them doing that behaviour again and again..... and show your dog an alternative behaviour.
If you don't teach them an alternative behaviour.....temptation may be just too much, especially if they have been "rewarded" by the unwanted behaviour.

Food is a big reward for a dog.
Take counter/bench surfing, grabbing that food on the bench is rewarding..... but there are many other types of rewards.
We may not even recognise that the unwanted behaviour your dog is showing has been rewarded....simply because you cannot see any food involved......
Food does not need to be present for your dog to be rewarded.

If your dog struggles with recall around other dogs and they wander off to investigate those dogs far away.....then they play....they have been rewarded and that action is likely to be repeated.

Preventing those moments being repeated is VERY important.

Why wouldn't they do that behaviour again ?
It worked for them....they ran away, played with a dog, it was fun....so chances are it will happen again.

Prevent those behaviours being reinforced again.
Manage situations carefully so they cannot be repeated and rewarded.

If you want a different behaviour, train an alternative behaviour.....sometimes it really is as simple as that.

They just need to burn off some more energy 🚫
For many dogs all this does is add to the issue and can create a highly energetic dog with incredible stamina.
You are not alone with this....it really is a common issue.
With the best of intentions people will throw that ball again and again for a hyper/over excited dog.....in an effort to tire them out.
Or, they will walk further and run them faster.
It doesn't help.
All it does is build extreme stamina and they need more and more to physically exhaust them.

So we walk further and longer to tire out...but all we are doing is likely fueling the very behaviour we are trying desperately to stop.

Physically exhausting a dog doesn't help over arousal.....it can fuel it.❗❗

They need to rest and sleep.
They need limits with the opportunities to repeat behaviours .
They need to reengage their nose to calm and relax them.

If they don't...the loop goes on and on.

Over excited/over arousal/hyper arousal IS a form of reactivity.
I know many may struggle understanding that having a dog that is desperate to meet others is a reactive dog...because they don't appear "aggressive".
They can be described as "friendly" or "just LOVES other dogs".
It is also incredibly stressful for these dogs.
Stress hormones can be released with both positive and negative stimuli....a difficult concept for some to accept that their "friendly" dog can be stressed.
This is not about dogs that get excited when they see a dog they know...this is purely aimed at dogs that go straight to over arousal at the mere sight of a dog/cat or person...whatever their trigger is.

Bite risks...
Yes even these dogs can bite (or be bitten).
There is no emotional self control and things can change in an instant with these dogs....they do pose a bite risk...and I appreciate that is hard to hear for many as their friendly dog would "never" bite another.
EVERY dog has the capability to bite given certain circumstances and over arousal puts dogs into positions where their emotions take over.
Many dogs bite when over aroused.
Bites can also be redirected back onto their guardians/owners or the nearest person/dog/child present.
They also fail to "read the room", there is no time taken to assess the other dog they desperately want to interact with....so the lead is taken off that friendly dog so they can meet their new "friend".

This is a new graphic based on another I made but this is specifically for over aroused dogs.
Your dog will also have their own unique changes you can see as they go over that all important threshold.

You are not alone with this issue...it is very common.
Reactive dog guardians/owners are some of the most dedicated I have ever met.
These dogs can be incredibly hard to live with.

You can make a difference.
