What a bitter sweet morning. Heartwood Tullamore Dew walked onto the truck and off to her new home without a worry in the world.
Tully was the last of her line here with me so it was a hard goodbye but I hope she has an absolutely amazing life where she gets the attention she deserves instead of the limited time I have available.
So a few weeks ago my beautiful mare Maggie kicked out through a fence and cut her leg quite badly. It was obviously very painful and as a result, she absolutely refused to let me bandage it without a vet administering as much sedation as they were willing to give her. Even then, she didn’t want to let us touch it.
This has never happened to me before. I’ve been bandaging legs since I was 16 and I’ve never had a horse I couldn’t convince to let me try. Maggie was my sleepless night challenge.
I thought surely there was a solution, but hours of google searching found nothing. So I got creative and reached out to NC Equine with a request to make me custom made cotton pockets for stable wraps they had in stock.
NC Equine listened to what I wanted, worked through my ideas and helped me create the solution in my video below.
The result? A boot I can change on my own and a much happier horse!
Got to love a horse that lets you multitask! Maggie’s mowing the grass while I water the garden.
Maggie had a little disagreement with the fence so while she heals we are focusing purely on finding a place of rest.
This is a process of teaching Maggie to find relaxation with a low head position (rest) when she experiences tension. The flag creates tension but when Maggie drops her head, the tension (and flag) go away.
It’s like reprogramming her to look for a soft safe place when she’s worried instead of the natural “I’m outta here!” Response.
It was blowing a gale but I’m having too much fun not to still grab an opportunity to work with Maggie. Red isn’t her colour…. Guess I’ll have to buy new boots….
Welcome to Heartwood Maggie….
Maggie made the trip over from Ballarat yesterday in horrible weather and unloaded like she’s been here all her life.
Really excited about our journey together.
Thanks to Patchwork Park Equine Services for the opportunity to purchase this lovely mare and to Champions Horse Transport for a smooth process picking her up and delivering her safe and sound.
Just strolling into 2022 in our own time….
It wasn’t very long ago that I was worried Sam would face an early retirement as he was affected by “head shakers” and completely unpredictable, unridable and in pain. It was heart breaking.
But I have made sure he gets everything he needs with support from our Vet, nutritional experts and some very clever friends and he’s been improving in leaps and bounds.
My beautiful girls meeting me at the gate for tea. Kit Kat (big coloured mare) would like to have a foal again if her behaviour towards the geldings is any indication 🙊
After a couple of turbulent weeks getting to spend some time with my beautiful girls yesterday was good for my soul.
I seem to be very much Kitkats person but it still warms my heart when she literally presents herself for attention and love. No halter needed 🥰
12 months ago I was recovering from surgery and hadn’t ridden properly in almost two years. I am still working on my strength and balance (amongst many other things) but to have this horse to relearn on is a gift in itself. For any of our followers out there struggling with their riding or their body not behaving as it should, just keep chipping away day by day and remember you’re not alone x
What a beautiful evening to squeeze in a ride. Who else is making the best of this nice weather before we hopefully get some decent rain?
Wishing you all a very happy Easter with your family and friends. We are making the most of the beautiful weather with ponies and motorbikes before a family lunch
What would I do without you my beautiful big mud pig?
Who else is out playing in the puddles caused by that glorious rain we had yesterday?
I sincerely hope that all our friends and followers in the Cherry Gardens fire area got a thorough drenching yesterday. Please remember Heartwood’s gates are always open for you in times of emergency x
