Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

💚 As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners don’t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

Please excuse the poor videoing! Have you wondered what goes on when the vet brings your pet out to our treatment room? We have a lot of fun and cuddles. This is Maggie, she is usually wary of strangers and strange places, however, today after her vet check, her vet Dr Kate was making up Maggie’s medication and we were having fun playing a game. We really pride ourselves on being a stress free and fear free clinic.

I would like to introduce you to our newest team member Riva. Riva’s primary role is to support our team of vets and nurses (by having lots of cuddles and making them laugh by doing crazy puppy things) as well as our patients. He supports puppies having their vaccinations as Riva is fully vaccinated and he knows that through distraction techniques, needles don’t even hurt. You may have met Riva already as he is often on the reception desk, putting smiles on faces 🐾💚

🐾 Behind the scenes 🐾
We really pride ourselves on treating every patient as though they are our own. Here is Dr. Olivia Marshall giving ‘Chia’ a reassuring cuddle after her recent surgical procedure whilst having her lunch. We regularly have patients in our lunch room with us. Dr. Olivia has a soft spot for Greyhounds and is owned by a beautiful rescue Greyhound named ‘Spud’. Dr. Olivia is often found sitting on the ground with her patients letting them sniff her stethoscope and taking all the time that they need to feel comfortable.💚
