🪱🪱 It’s the time of the season that most foals are nearing 3 months old and it’s time to think about de-worming! 🪱🪱

We recommend that all foals have a de-wormer at 3 and then at 5 months of age. This should have a benzimidazole drug as the active ingredient. This treatment targets ascarids or “roundworms”, which can cause colic and other serious illnesses in this age group.

At weaning (around 6-7 months), we recommend running a faecal egg count to identify any worm burdens and if necessary, enable targeted treatment specific to your foal. 💩

In conjunction with Randlab, Ovens Valley Equine will be conducting a gastroscoping day on
Wednesday the 7th of February!

Horses with gastric ulceration may show some of the following signs:
• Poor condition or “poor doers”
• "Picky eaters"
• Dull or poorly conditioned coat
• "Grumpy" or "girthy" horses
• Mild episodes of colic (often recurrent)
• Behavioural issues under saddle

Here are some photos of painful ulceration diagnosed in a horse at one of our previous scoping days.

Seminar on Friday the 3rd November at Hawkesbury racecourse. And potential farrier only morning of shoeing demos on the Saturday for registrants of the Friday seminar.

-What is the ideal hoof?
-How do we create and then maintain an ideal hoof?
-How and why does the hoof change shape?
-How does the shape of the hoof affect posture?

Shoeing demonstration working with a vet and radiographs:

Our nurse Tahnee is grandma!! Little Floss came in for an IgG test and it was low which increased her risk of serious infection. A bag of plasma solved the problem and she has her sass back!
Measuring the IgG is a quick, easy and affordable method to assess antibody transfer from mare to foal.
