Christmas is coming and with it seems to bring puppies as Christmas presents - fantastic gift, but please remember a puppy is for life not just seasonal. As a new, or soon to be, owner you will need some ground rules. The Editorial below may help - training certainly will - pm me for class availability.

PUPPY SOCIALISATION

It’s very exciting for the whole family when a new puppy arrives, so much to do, so many cuddles to give and to get!

It’s a good idea to be mindful of what Rules and Manners you need to establish.
What areas are ‘banned’? Some areas may be ‘access by invitation only’ – horse-paddocks for example. Every situation is different; develop rules that fit your lifestyle.

Training your pup should be highest on your priority list. Training will determine if your pup grows into a confident well mannered Canine Citizen – or not!

If you don’t train your pup for good behaviour – you cannot blame him/her for exhibiting bad behaviour.

Early education is critical for development. Correct education will develop socially acceptable behaviour and give you the skills to recognise a developing problem and deal with it accordingly - in a positive and caring fashion.

Puppy Pre-School should be a required investment for every new pup. Choose a reputable establishment where bullying is not allowed and your Instructor is experienced. Don’t be afraid to question your Instructors experience. You have your dog for life so establishing correct behaviour, expectations and consequences in these early weeks is vital.

Environmental Socialisation means taking puppy out on excursions. Introduction to as many sights, sounds, smells as possible will be invaluable as your pup matures. If Pup becomes fearful, ignore him! Cuddling or patting will reinforce fear. Allowing pup to assess the situation without your involvement will build life-long problem-solving skills and confidence! Keeping puppy safe is obviously of paramount importance - any danger - remove him in the quickest way possible!

It’s sometimes unsafe for pup to touch foreign ground until his last Vaccination, carry your pup everywhere. Choose locations where you can rest – even a 10kg puppy gets heavy when walking long distances! Visiting an area of dubious hygiene? Take a blanket for pup to sit and play on, he doesn’t need to be actively watching in order to absorb new environments.

Games are fun and an essential part of education. Avoid Physical games involving rough play resulting in biting or mouthing which can become problematic. Choose healthy games; Hide n Seek, Fetch, Find, Retrieve & Carry.
