At Sugarloaf Animal Hospital, we see a variety of animals for desexing and many of these are Exotics. We have trained veterinarians and experienced nurses, plus species-specific equipment, to help ensure the best care for your pet.
Female rabbits have a high incidence of uterine issues, including cancer (up to 80% in some breeds). The removal of the reproductive tract (including the uterus) will help prevent this. Desexing also prevents pregnancy and pseudopregnancy.
Although females may have modified sexual behaviour after desexing, they may still dig or mount other bunnies once desexed.
For males, castration can reduce the incidence of aggression between males housed together and stop unwanted breeding if housed with females. However, it is important to remember that it can take six weeks after castration for males to be fully “sterile.”
We recommend desexing for rabbits around 4-6 months of age. Desexing is carried out under general anaesthesia and all our rabbits go home with additional medications for pain relief and a special information pack for the owner to ensure optimal recovery post-surgery. Our dedicated team will call you once your pet is home, and again during the recovery period to ensure things are going well. We will then follow-up with a wound check consultation carried out 10 days post-surgery.
Please call us today at 02-4955-1833 for further information on de-sexing for rabbits, or any other pet 🐇
