ARTHRITIS AND THE COLD
I have seen more than a few of my pain patients with arthritis starting to get sorer in this cold weather . (Dogs and cats )
1/ have a rug on them that is big enough to cover their shoulders and hips . Even in door dogs need a rug at night and when they go outside to toilet .- even if they have a thick coat as walking out in the cold is like jumping into cold water - your muscles contract .
2/ if they are having a sore day rest . They will still want to go for walk as they don’t self modulate . But do something else like hide some treats around house
3/ make sure no hair is protruding from bottom of paws as this is like wearing slippery socks . Small slips can really flare them up
4/ implement plan b of medication . All my pain patients have or know what else to give if the current medication is not helping .
5/ if your cats bowls are elevated give them a chair or something else they can use to make it easier for them to jump

Dogs , donkeys , hiding dogs , cute dogs smiling dogs , smiling horses , dog seal impressions … what a great week !
Oh and we did see cats but they are photo phobic 🙃🙀

This is a Bosu ball and a very clever dog !
Bosu ball exercises are great way to strengthen a dogs core as well as many other exercises . It usually takes months of training to teach a dog to sit on the ball and have the strength . But not this dog ! Straight away on she sat 😳 with amazing balance 👌

FAST FACT TIME
The subtle signs of pain .
Animals are very good at hiding pain so they are not seen as easy prey. This is especially so for chronic pain like arthritis but even dental pain . They don’t vocalise and often change their behaviour in subtle ways.
Old age is not a disease. So just because a cat or dog is slowing down with age this doesn’t make it normal.
Young dogs and cats can also be afflicted by arthritis.
If you see any of these signs below contact your veterinarian.
Remember there is so much we can do from small changes around the house to medication and of course weight loss

FAST FACT TIME -ACUPUNCTURE
Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of acupuncture ! There has been a lot of research in the past few years in how acupuncture works. What is now known is it works at the periphery where the body first acknowledges pain( such as an arthritic joint ) and it also helps the modulation of pain - helps dampen the brains response to the painful stimulus . I personally use acupuncture as part of a multimodal approach to pain - along with medication and exercises. But I have also used it to help elderly dogs and cats with arthritis that cannot take medication.
