Meet Archie the whippet.

I was lucky enough to look after him this weekend whilst his owners were away. Unfortunately he broke his leg recently and has to be kept in a crate during the day to stop him doing any damage to his broken leg.

Did you know that we can look after pets who require medication administration or pets who require post operative care.

To find out more or to book in pet minding please call, text or email.

* 7 problems with senior dogs and how you can manage them *

Your dogโ€™s needs begin to change as they age. Older dogs can gain weight, suffer from a number of health issues or develop unusual lumps and bumps on their body. But even though you may need to watch more closely for potential health concerns, your dog can continue to live a full and active life for years to come.

Your dog will be considered "senior" depending on its size or breed. Smaller breeds typically enjoy longer lives, and some can live well into their teens. Larger breeds can typically live eight to 10 years.

1. Dental Problems
Poor dental hygiene and dental disease can damage your older dogโ€™s teeth, gums and other organs. Talk to your vet about the best ways to maintain good dental health in your senior dog, including:

- Manual tooth brushing
- Feeding chew treats or dry dog food formulated to help keep teeth clean
- Regular teeth cleaning at the vet

2. Stiff and sore joints
Osteoarthritis is a gradual but progressive degenerative condition of the joints. Bony outgrowths can also form around a joint, which can cause pain and restrict mobility.
Signs of osteoarthritis include:

- Decreased activity
- Reluctance to climb stairs
- Stiffness and difficulty rising after a rest
- Yelping or whimpering in pain
- Loss of appetite
- Occasional aggression (due to pain)

There are several ways you can alleviate discomfort and help treat arthritis in your senior pet:
- Anti-inflammatory and pain-relief medication
- Nutritional supplements
- Physical therapy, including hydrotherapy
- Weight loss
- Environmental modification โ€“ ramps, padded bedding, massaging of joints and mental stimulation

3. Lumps and Bumps
Older dogs can often develop unusual growths on and under their skin. Not all lumps and bumps are sinister, but look out for changes in size, shape, colour and consistency, as well as redness, weeping and ulceration. If you notice anything unusual, consult your vet.

4. Cognitive Decline
Cognitive dysfunction, or dementia, is a progressive disease that may change your senior dogโ€™s behaviour. Signs of decline may include:

- Urinating and defecating inside
- Disorientation (e.g. getting stuck in a corner or having difficulty finding its food)
- Increased attention-seeking behaviour
- Waking at night and sleeping a lot during the day
- Disinterest in toys and physical activity
- Pacing and irritability
- Loud barking or whining, often at inappropriate times
- Anxiety, particularly separation anxiety
- Reduced appetite

Cognitive decline cannot be cured, but the progression of the disease can be managed with dietary modification and drug therapy, which you can discuss with your vet. It is also important to:

- Take more frequent trips outdoors or provide an indoor elimination area
- Provide mental stimulation
- Stick to a daily routine to make your dog feel safe and secure
- Avoid stairs where possible, particularly if your dog is arthritic

5. Vision Impairment
Changes in your senior dogโ€™s eyes can affect their eyesight. Common signs of vision impairment include:

- Bumping into things
- Not being able to find its food or water
- Being easily startled
- Cloudiness in the eyes

Most senior dogs will have a cloudy, bluish-grey haziness in their pupils, which can be mistaken for cataracts. This is a normal age-related change in the lens of the eye and does not usually affect their vision.

6. Hearing Loss
It is not uncommon for senior dogs to experience hearing loss. With a bit of support, dogs with hearing loss can continue to live full and happy lives. Hereโ€™s how you can help a dog experiencing hearing loss:

- Always keep your dog on a leash when outdoors.
- Alert your dog to your presence when approaching (e.g. turn on the light or tap on the floor).
- Use hand cues for commands, and reward your dog when they respond.

7. Lower activity levels
You may notice your dog sleeping more during the day, or they may be reluctant to run around or play as much as they once did. However, older dogs need to remain active to avoid obesity and muscle wasting, and to remain mentally stimulated. Hereโ€™s how to encourage your dog to exercise:

- Know your dogโ€™s limits and modify the intensity and duration of activity depending on their health.
- Swimming is a great low-impact activity for senior dogs.
- Dogs love the challenge of using their senses to find food, so be creative and hide some of their food as a treat (e.g. under cups, inside food toys).

- All about Colic -

What is it?
Colic, put simply, is a sign of a larger problem thatโ€™s causing your horse abdominal pain. The condition can develop from gas distension, intestinal blockages, colon torsion, small intestinal twists, grass sickness or even liver disease. It can be mild to serious depending on whatโ€™s causing it.

One of the most serious causes of colic is a โ€˜twisted gutโ€™, when the small intestine, which is very mobile, twists around itself. When it twists, fluid builds up and the blood supply is cut off, which leaves your horse in a lot of pain. This lack of blood supply to the intestinal area can also cause sections of the gut to die off. Dead intestines can fester and potentially make your horse very ill.

Impact is another cause of colic. This is a build-up of faeces within the large intestine and is similar to constipation. This often develops if thereโ€™s been a build-up of dry, indigestible forage.

What are the clinical signs?

Colic feels like an irritation in the stomach, which is why horses may try to get rid of the discomfort by kicking at their abdomen or rolling. Other clinical signs include:

- Turning around to look at their flanks
- Sweating
- Rolling
- Getting up and down
- Curling their lip
- Rapid breathing
- Acting off colour
- Generally looking lethargic

How is colic diagnosed?

A sudden period of box rest may trigger impaction colic, for example, so give your vet the horseโ€™s background history when he arrives so he or she knows the medical history. That way they can see if there are any influencing factors.

Your vet will conduct a full body examination and use a stethoscope to listen to the sounds of your horseโ€™s gut. They may perform a re**al examination or place a tube up your horseโ€™s nose, into his stomach.

Often vets will use your horseโ€™s response to pain relief to help them reach a diagnosis. If your horse responds well to simple pain relief such as phenylbutazone (bute) or buscopan, it may indicate a simple colic condition such as a spasmodic colic or an impaction, which can usually be managed at home with the right medication. With the more serious cases of colic, such as small intestinal strangulations, colon torsion or grass sickness, your horse may require hospitalisation and surgery.

How often should I wash my dog?

There is no straightforward answer for this, as it relies on a number of different factors including: your dog's fur type, whether their inside or outside, potential skin allergies your dog may have.

How fur type affects how often you should wash your dog
Dogs with oily coats, such as Basset Hounds, should be washed weekly. On the other hand, breeds with water repellent coats such as Golden Retrievers require less washing. The same goes for dogs with thick coats โ€“ like Malamutes โ€“ who benefit more from being frequently groomed instead. A general rule of thumb is to wash your dog when you notice an obvious change in their coatโ€™s condition, such as an obvious smell.

Are they an indoor dog or outdoor dog?
If your dog loves to run headfirst into creeks, splash across mud puddles and roll around in the dirt, then you will most likely need to wash them more often than an apartment-bound Maltese, for example. That said, you do share living quarters with your Maltese โ€“ so once again, it comes back to your tolerance.

For outdoor dogs you should err more on the side of caution. You should wash your outdoor dogs whenever the need arises, as this also gives you the opportunity to check for any ticks, fleas or other afflictions that are more likely with dogs that spend time in the outdoors.

Does your dog have skin allergies?
If your dog has sensitive or itchy skin, itโ€™s important to consult your vet first because washing your dog with the wrong shampoo can cause more irritation to the skin.
You should not use household cleaning products such as body wash or human shampoo on your dog. This may seem obvious, but these products are not suited to the condition of a dogโ€™s fur and skin, so should be avoided. A dog shampoo should always be your go-to!

All about Ragdolls

- The breed was developed in the 1960's in California.

- The breed came about when breeder Ann Baker crossed a white domestic longhaired female cat with various other longhaired breed cats. The white female possessed genes for a seal mitted or black tuxedo pattern and many of the kittens were born with 'points' similar to a Himalayan.

- Ann specifically selected cats with gentle placid personalities and chose the name 'Ragdoll' due to them 'flopping' when being picked up.

- Ragdolls are known for being docile, gentle, affectionate and easy going.

- They aren't keen on hunting nor are they street-savy, for those reasons they are better suited as indoor pets.

- The life expectancy of the Ragdoll is 14-15 years.

- Female ragdolls weigh anywhere from 4.5kg to 6.8kg and males 6.8kg to 9kg!

Grass Seeds in Dogs

Did you know that grass seeds can cause serious infections and problems in your dog? Itโ€™s a common condition we see in veterinary practice, and it is hard to believe that something so small can cause so much discomfort and havoc. The common types of grass on the east coast of Australia are spear grass, barley grass, and wild oats.

Grass seeds can be found in your dogโ€™s nose, mouth, fur, paws, ears, or eyes causing inflammation and infection if not removed and treated. The seed essentially attaches to and migrates through the body and depending on its entry point, can travel to the lungs, bladder, brain, and even spinal cord amongst other locations.

Symptoms of a grass seed include:
- Pain, swelling, excessive licking, oozing or bloody discharge, lameness
- Itching, head tilt, shaking head, neurological symptoms
- Sneezing, discharge, or blood from the nose, shaking head or pawing at their muzzle
- Swelling, redness, discharge of the eyes

Breeds with medium hair length are most susceptible to grass seed migration due to the density of their coats which the seeds stick to however, any breed can be affected by a grass seed foreign body. Itโ€™s important you brush your long/medium hair dogs frequently to prevent grass seeds from embedding into the skin. Ensure you check your dog all over if they have been running through long grass, especially in the warmer seasons and wetter months. Always keep your lawn cut short and prevent your pooch from running through long grass if possible.

- Worming Puppies -

Dogs are prone to intestinal worms, including:

- Hookworms
There are a number of ways dogs can become infested with hookworm, including coming into contact with larvae infested soil, or ingesting the larvae in food or water.

- Tapeworms
Usually transmitted by fleas. Segments of tapeworm, similar-looking to grains of rice, may be noticed in your pupโ€™s faeces or around their bottom. In some instances, your pup may vomit up segments of tapeworm.

- Roundworm
Infection can occur by ingesting infected faces. Infected dogs can even transmit it to their pups via the mammary glands during feeding.

Symptoms
Common symptoms of worms include:
- Scooting (otherwise known as when your dog drags their bum along the ground)
- Change in appetite
- Dull coat
- Round, bloated belly

Left untreated, your puppy may experience the following as a result of intestinal worms:
- Loss of condition
- Weight loss
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
In extreme cases, death may occur as a result of the above symptoms.

So how do we prevent worms? Administering an โ€˜all wormerโ€™ treatment, available in either a paste or a tablet, will protect your pup from all types of intestinal worms including roundworm, hookworm and tapeworm; some of which can transfer from dogs to humans (just in case you were second guessing whether it was worth it!).

How often should I be worming by puppy?
Your puppyโ€™s worming schedule should look like the following:

2 โ€“ 12 Weeks: Liquid wormer every 2 weeks
12 Weeks โ€“ 6 Months: Worming tablet every 4 weeks
6+ Months: Worming tablet every 3 months

For any products or advice on intestinal worming, please get in touch today.
I regularly do orders for intestinal worming products, so keep an eye out for the next online order.
