Pets in Spain are no longer considered material goods or objects, but "living beings with sensibility". This change became regulated by law in 2022. This means that they can legally be part of the family and are also required to have a national animal identification document (DNI).

The goal is to create a registry of pets to identify them and guarantee their rights.

The rule also regulates the joint custody of dogs and cats in case of divorce or separation. It also points out that they cannot be mortgaged or abandoned. The law came from a legislative initiative promoted in 2015 by the Observatory of Justice and Animal Defense.

More than 500,000 signatures were collected so that the animals were no longer considered objects in the Civil Code.

With this reform, Spain joins Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Portugal, countries that have already changed the legal status of animals.
