After Rimadyl became popular, one of my technician's dogs died 2 weeks after using it. In the emergency service, we had dogs coming in with kidney failure, liver failure, gastric ulcers, etc. after using Rimadyl. Alarm bells!

Labrador Retrievers are specifically mentioned as sensitive to Rimadyl/Carprofen.
Galliprant is supposed to have the least amount of side effects, but it is labeled for use in arthritis only.
Metacam can only be given by injection once for cats. Oral Metacam is specifically labeled as NOT for use in cats.* It can cause renal failure.
Onsior is only labeled for postop pain for orthopedic surgery or spay/neuter.
The Previcox insert has a list of adverse reactions too long to even put in this caption.

Potential Adverse Reactions for ALL NSAIDs
- Kidney Failure
- Liver Failure
- Seizures
- Gastrointestinal bleeding and perforation. If your animal is on an NSAID, make sure you check their stool! Dark, tarry stools, diarrhea, anorexia, and other GI symptoms can be signs of a serious issue.

✳️ I ALWAYS do lab work before starting an NSAID to make sure liver and kidney function are fine. Then, I do lab work every 3 months while the pet is on the medication.
✳️ Always ASK for the drug inserts from your veterinarian!
✳️ I absolutely minimize the use of NSAIDs with my pets by using alternative therapies and safer OTC options where possible.

❌ Do NOT mix NSAIDs with steroids.
❌ NSAIDs should NOT be given with any other NSAID!! This can kill your pet. You have to have a minimum 7 day wash out period (wait 7 days) before switching.
❌ Do NOT give antacids (like Famotidine) with NSAIDs (there is a potential reaction where the tissue of the stomach swells)

✅ For natural pain management options, read more here: https://drjudymorgan.com/blogs/blog/treating-arthritis-naturally?_pos=1&_sid=22a88fa12&_ss=r

✅ For Syringomyelia: https://drjudymorgan.com/blogs/blog/therapy-for-syringomyelia?_pos=6&_sid=5199006d8&_ss=r

*Edit to add: Metacam has been labeled for cats outside the US, but still has a narrow safety margin in cats and signs of overdose may be seen at small overdose levels.

There's really just three main types of dog behavior problems and this flow chart summarizes how you can resolve all three.

Obviously, there's only so much info we can fit on a single page but if you'd like to learn more about how to resolve these 3 common types of dog behavior problems you should enroll in our free online course:
https://dunbar.info/6steps

It all starts with NOT feeding your dog from a food bowl. If your dog has a behavior problems, there's a very good chance you can use their regular daily allotment of food to help resolve this problem. You might be able to resolve it without using their food but making use of their food will almost certainly accelerate the training.

Do the problems occur when the dog is at home and unsupervised? The key is preventing these problems with confinement, either a crate or playpen, but it's essential that you start by teaching your dog to LOVE hanging out in these confined areas, and the best way to do that is with food-stuffed chew toys.

Are the problems the result of fear or stress? Is there any element of aggression? If so, you have to manage for safety and then use classical conditioning to teach your dog to feel more at ease. You'll also want to use lure reward training to put useful skills on cue, which you can use to redirect your dog's attention from stimuli that stress them.

If it's not an at-home unsupervised problem, and it's not a fear or stress-based problem, then all you need is a simple obedience training solution. Your dog is doing something you don't like. What would you like them to do instead? Sit-stay? Down-Stay? Go to their bed and settle down? Be quiet?

Teach them to do this behavior on cue and then practice it in progressively more challenging situations until they do it reliably, anytime, anywhere.

I never ever believe in that Dominance Myth in dogs !! Years ago I worked for a Fox Hunting Club where there was 65 dogs together, living together, playing eating together and I 've observed the way they were interacting was like a big family ; dogs with experience ( parents , older sibling, ) were the teacher, role model for the young ones.

Theories are just that. Just an idea until they are proven true. And like many ideas, this trend has been out of style for decades.

While backyard trainers will try to spin what your dog does into flashy terms like "alpha" and "asserting dominance", your dog is not built with this software.

While it makes sense to us because we live in a "top down" system, dogs are just doing what works for them and they don't function in this hierarchy.

By claiming this theory, they can attempt to justify the use of fear, intimidation, corrections and pain to "fix" the problem... they have no choice but to try to take back "leadership".

These out of control trainers are using smoke and mirrors to justify their inability to work with and understand your dog.

Even the scientists who considered this to be true quickly realized that they were wrong when wolves, who were (and still inaccurately are) the justification for this blueprint were realized to be living in family groups instead of being ruled by an alpha.

Come join us in the 2000’s where it’s uncool to train this way!

What does a candy company have to do with pet care?

You can purchase your Mars owned pet food, (Royal Canin, Nutro, Iams, Eukanuba, Whiskas, etc)
then take your pet to the Mars owned vet hospital (Banfield, VSH, VCA, etc)
then have diagnostic testing done at a Mars owned lab. (Antech)

The concern with one company having so much money and power over the pet industry is that this could force prices to increase and quality of veterinary care and services to decrease.

Someone could mass produce poor quality food, oversell vaccines and flea/tick/hw chemicals, and keep our pets on a constant wheel of disease while profiting from each link in the chain...

"A pilot study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of seven different environmental enrichment (EE) activities on the behaviour of 10 training dogs housed in an office environment during training within an assistance dog charity. Results suggest there is a need to diversify thinking around EE, shifting common thinking of EE as one entity to instead consider EE in different categories and to ensure animals receive a mixture of EE types."

Watch Out for Birch Sugar in Foods❗

If you see the ingredient “birch sugar” on a food label, keep it out of your pet’s reach. ❌ This ingredient is the same thing as xylitol, a sugar alcohol sweetener that’s toxic to pets. If consumed, xylitol can lead to a sudden release of insulin, followed by a sharp drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia), triggering vomiting, loss of consciousness and seizures in dogs (cats appear less sensitive). 🆘🐕

Xylitol may also be referred to as “birch sap” or “wood sugar,” so keep an eye out for these ingredients on labels as well.

Read today’s free pet health blog to learn more about the dangers of xylitol to pets.

Here are more products that contains xylitol: https://bit.ly/3M8TgN4

Muzzles have many applications! These are just a few. Thanks to my model, Aspen, who learned to LOVE wearing a muzzle because her guardians went at her pace. Now when I say the cue, “Muzzle!” Aspen shoves her face in enthusiastically and waits for her treat. (It’s really stinking cute.)

"My dog went through extensive training, and he can obey me, but now he is showing aggression towards other dogs and people."

Unfortunately, emails like this make up 25% of my inquiries. Every time, the client says, "It never felt right, but I just continued with the lessons."

Dog training is unregulated, so it is up to the consumer to do their due diligence. Here are some things to keep in mind when searching for a trainer.

What competent trainers do:

√ Never offer guarantees when it comes to behavior.
√ Provide you with interventions to prevent your dog from rehearsing undesired behaviors.
√ Use motivators like food and opportunities for play to pay for desired behaviors.
√ Invite your feedback and adjust training plans based on what works for you and your dog.
√ Measure their success based your dog developing the skills they need to successfully navigate an unpredictable world.

When should you run (not walk) away from a trainer?

X They offer you guarantees with a no refund policy.
X They assign labels to your dog, like "aggressive" or " stubborn."
X They use blanket explanations like "your dog is attempting to be the alpha" for complex behavioral challenges.
X They address every behavior by punishing it via potentially harmful tools like prong and shock collars without providing any information about what they want your dog to do instead.
X Their measure of success is an absence of behavior. Your dog now does nothing in the presence of triggers.

Questions you want to ask any dog trainer:

- Do you have a certification?
- How are you going to motivate my dog?
- What are you going to do if my dog gets something right?
- What are you going to do if my dog gets something wrong?

Please, please, please remember that dog training is an unregulated field. Bad trainers can forever change how your dog sees their world.

Let’s make this super clear… “Correction Collars shouldn’t be used because of the welfare of the animal” is very much an opinion.

But it’s an opinion based on the scientific literature that says the risk of using correction collars and aversive methods is higher than any reward one may get from using them. The scientific literature has a growing body of evidence that proves aversive collars are NOT more effective than positive methods and that aversive methods have a higher risk of emotional and physical harm to the dogs than positive methods.

That’s why evidence-based trainers will not use aversive collars. It’s not that we think they “don’t work.” In fact, those collars have data proving they do accomplish a guardian’s intended goal.

The reason evidence-based trainers don’t use those tools is because in addition to accomplishing a specific behavior outcome, you also run a major risk of emotionally and/or physically damaging the welfare of the dog. And anyone willing to run that risk when there’s clearly an equally effective (if not more effective) method available is not working out of integrity.

When you have literature that basically says, These two techniques are equally effective at accomplishing their intended goal. BUT Option B has a higher risk for emotional and physical harm… You go with Option A cuz it doesn’t have those risks.

Want the sources and scientific review of everything in this post?

I really, really, really want you to head to my bio right now and check out the video on “Purely Positive Dog Training.”

It’s one of my most popular videos; and in it, I go over the comprehensive scientific research which has examined the efficacy and safety of correction collars versus so-called “positive” methods.

I know you’ll love getting nerdy with me as I explain the position of evidence-based trainers and the researchers who educate us.

As People of the Global Majority in the animal training and behaviour industry, we are likely to have heard at least a few of these in our lifetime and throughout our career. This industry is not exempt from the harm these racist and microaggressive comments and questions can cause.

In this conference, we hope that everyone will enjoy learning more about training and behaviour as well as how to do better for our fellow colleagues and human clients that are People of the Global Majority.

1-7 August will be a big week of learning and we are excited that you’re committed to be here to join us. Thank you.

Big thank you to Lili Chin for so kindly making this for us. We love and appreciate this work from the bottom of our hearts.

…we found MANY concerns with their conclusions.

New Study shows dogs fed fresh pet food had healthier skin and were less prone to skin issues than dogs who ate ultra processed pet food like dry kibble.

Make sure to share this research with your Veterinarian if you have a pet struggling with skin issues and try to get off of as much dry food as you can!

"Compared to the commonly known dry foods, fresh foods are processed at relatively lower temperatures and pressures. They also have a higher proportion of fresh meats, which increases the proportions of protein and fat in the food. Finally, fresh foods must be refrigerated after processing to prevent spoilage. Conversely, dry foods have higher proportions of carbohydrates and lower fat contents. Moreover, the drying process allows these diets to be shelf stable. Thus, a dry pet food will be made from different ingredients and through different processes than a fresh diet. As a result, there are differences in the nutrient profile of the diets and the nutrient availability to the animal, which could in turn influence the nourishment of the animal."
