Heart and Soul Dog and Rescue Society is in need of help! They recently have had to do an emergency c-section on momma Kya and her 8 babies who are thriving and doing well. You can imagine the cost associated with that procedure alone. That very same day we had another mom come in who had 5, 8 week old babies at home. She came in needing stabilizing and after some diagnostics showed she was not doing well and we didn’t know why. She started showing improvement but unfortunately succumbed to her illness over night. Saturday, 4 out of 5 babies came in very sick. Unfortunately one little baby had already passed away. After further diagnostics it was determined they have Feline Panleukopenia Virus. This is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease. We suspect momma Tiger was asymptomatic. She held on long enough to make sure her babies were able to be on their own. Now with 4 little babies needing around the clock care in clinic, the veterinary bills are climbing and fast. If you would like to donate to help these babies, feel free to send an e-transfer to [email protected] (we do not take payment over the phone) or you can send it to [email protected]. Please share their story! And help support an amazing rescue!

Feline Panleukopenia is a serious disease that can be prevented through vaccination of your pet. It is highly contagious, often fatal, viral disease of cats that is seen worldwide. Kittens are affected most severely. Panleukopenia is closely related to Canine Parvovirus. The vaccination can be given to kittens are early as 8 weeks and require a booster 12 and 16 weeks of age and then annually. Here at Gladys Pet Hospital, we offer these vaccines and more for your pet. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment to update your pets vaccines.

Meet Peppermint, Pine, Peuter and Pounce!
So far they are slowly recovering but are not out of the woods yet! Some good improvement today. Keep them in your thoughts!

The amazing Heart and Soul Dog and Cat Rescue Society took in this sweet momma over the weekend. She came into their care VERY pregnant. After giving her some time to settle it became obvious she was having issues giving birth. Her amazing foster brought her into us for an exam and we found that she was having troubles. It was determined the best thing for her was to have an emergency c-section. Momma Kya had 8 beautiful babies. Upon further inspection and an x-ray it showed that she has a broken pelvis in 2 different spots. She was not going to be able to have those babies naturally because of this complication. With lots of cage rest, Momma Kya will heal and more than likely have 80% movement in her hind end once healed and live a normal life. The foster updated us today and all the babies are doing well and momma is still recovering from her procedure. Big shout out to Heart and Soul for doing such amazing work and taking such great care of all the animals in their care! ❤️🐱

🚨Warning GRAPHIC CONTENT 🚨

What is pyometra?
Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to fill with bacteria and pus.
Pyometra may occur in any sexually intact young to middle-aged dog; however, it is most common in older dogs. Typically, the dog has been in heat within the previous four weeks. After many years of cycles without pregnancy, the uterine wall undergoes the changes that promote this disease. Owners should watch out for Purulent discharge draining from the uterus through the va**na. This discharge may be observed on the skin or hair under the tail or on bedding and furniture where the dog has recently laid. With an open pyometra, fever, lethargy, anorexia, and depression may or may not be present.
Toxins released by the bacteria affect the kidney's ability to retain fluid. Increased urine production occurs, and the dog drinks large amounts of water to compensate. An ultrasound examination may help identify an enlarged uterus and differentiate that from a normal pregnancy.

How is pyometra treated?
The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries by performing an ovariohysterectomy (spay). Dogs diagnosed in the early stage of the disease are very good surgical candidates. The pyometra surgery is somewhat more complicated than a routine spay at this stage. However, most dogs are diagnosed when they are quite ill, resulting in a more complicated surgical procedure and a longer period of hospitalization. Intravenous fluids are required to stabilize the dog before and after surgery. Antibiotics are usually given post surgery

The following photo is of a very inflamed uterus from a dog diagnosed with pyometra! She is now home recovering and doing very well!
