This Garden Project is converting unused land into a community teaching garden and working urban farm in Downtown Abbotsford

The Garden Project is a ‘growing’ effort by Community Services to convert unused land into a community teaching garden and working urban farm in the heart of Downtown Abbotsford. It’s a pilot project designed to highlight that personal and civic quality of life is 'rooted' in our food supply

The newly reclaimed site is located at 2408 Montvue Ave, next to the Community Services buildings. It’s qu

ickly becoming a vibrant addition to the neighbourhood. The upcoming plans for the site are to provide locally grown produce, host community events & workshops, and be a space for adults and children interested in learning about, and growing fresh, nutritious food you can enjoy eating. Some of the current winter crops include cabbages, celery, garlic, spinach, mustard greens, and celery root. The first fruit trees are in – although they need another season or two before enjoying the apples and plums. Spring planting is scheduled to start in early March 2016.

We love how Borage self seeds in our spaces. It’s related to tomatoes, has beautiful edible blue flowers, and it brings the bees in early to our field so they are accustomed to finding food here when our other crops need the bees!

Here’s the story of our seedling sale: years ago we had some extra plants - more than we could use. So we posted and said ‘plants for a twoonie’. People came from all over to support us! ‘Wow, we thought - this community is awesome’. We’ll do this again next year!
Trouble was, a few circumstances beyond our control got in the way of us repeating. the fun (this included the 2022 Flood devastating the greenhouse we used to use). But last season United Way of BC and Goodwin Greenhouses made our site so much better with two greenhouses. This spring, we are FINALLY!!! able to host another fundraiser seedling sale! 🌱 We are thankful and excited and we have sooo many plants (especially if you love tomatoes!) for Saturday. Which seedling is bigger? Trick question!!
Both seedlings are the same size and age - when we pot up our tomato seedlings we bury the stem as much as we can into the new pot to help the young plant develop a great root system. If you do the same at home when transplanting them later into the garden, you will have a robust plant.

So many great volunteers of all ages came out the other day and helped prep planting areas! The newly transplanted arugula is on its way & loving the weather. Thanks to all who came out and signed up to help this season. The 2024 growing season has begun!!

The Archway Urban Farm is looking for a Crop Production Assistant to assist with a variety of production activities including but not limited to, crop management, seeding, bed preparation, compost production, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, and preparing produce for market.

This position is a great fit for someone who enjoys outdoor work, has some farm crop experience and knowledge of pests and diseases.

Please note this is an Agriculture Canada Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) funded position. Therefore, applicants must meet the program criteria in order to be considered for the position.

It started small, but the Green Roof at Abbotsford Community Services is now 2/3 covered - come down to the Garden Project at 2408 Montvue Ave Today from 1-4 to plant up a basket!

Red, White & Green Canada 150 Event continues Sunday, July 16 at the Garden Project from 1-4pm! All supplies provided, no experience necessary. There are only a few more baskets needed to be planted - come on down to add your personal touch to the Abbotsford Community Services Green Roof and celebrate Canada's 150th Anniversary of Confederation

With your help and the Canada 150 Grant, the Garden Project will have a Green Roof shelter! Come out Sundays July 2 & 16 from 1-4pm; Thursdays July 6, 20, 27 from 4-7pm. No experience needed, all supplies provided at these Free Community Events.

The Wreath Workshop was a fun way to start the holiday season at the Garden Project, and everyone made great-looking wreaths!

An amazing First Year wouldn't have been possible without great support from Terrific Volunteers, and local businesses & individuals such as Vancity Credit Union, Blackwood Building Centre, Net Zero Waste, Healey Hay & Strawdust Supply, Klassen Landsaping, McKonkey Arborist Services, Horton's Hauling, Orchid Gardens Landscaping, and above all, Abbotsford Community Services. It's been great to have been a part of Abbotsford Farm & Country Market - looking forward to new opportunities for Year #2!

Harvest time is coming...

It's a Start

The idea was to 'race' the cauliflower seeds started indoors with the ones planted outdoors in their 'eco-friendly', recyclable, 'private' greenhouses, but it's so cozy indoors, it wasn't a contest - despite the awesome weather recently! Upside is that you should be able to get your fresh spring cauliflower from Day 1 Urban Farm sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the fall planted cabbages and garlic are thriving - and the hyacinths by the front gate will be sure to tempt you any day now, to stop and smell the flowers. Stay tuned for when our Market Hours Start!
