While we understand that it can be stressful for many of our feline friends to visit the veterinary hospital, it is a very important part of maintaining their health.

Cats are known to be very stoic animals. This means that often they don't show us signs of illness until it is quite advanced. Annual exams for cats of all ages, as well as blood work and other diagnostic tests are crucial for early detection of disease. This makes it possible for early diagnosis and treatment, resulting in a longer and happier life!

If you would like to schedule an appointment or have questions about how to make your cat's visit a more positive experience, don't hesitate to contact us!

Cheryl- our Hospital Manager and co-owner of Ellwood Park Animal Hospital. She has been with Ellwood since August of 1994. Although she is the Hospital Manager, she enjoys assisting wherever she is needed in the hospital, which we are so grateful for. Cheryl takes care of the entire team at Ellwood, organizing our events, continuing education and implementing hospital protocols. She is absolutely integral in keeping the many cogs in motion at our hospital!

Earlier this week, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced an update to their dog importation regulations and subsequent changes to their import requirements for dogs entering the United States. These changes will come into effect on August 1, 2024 and will impact dogs travelling from Canada to the United States.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is currently in the process of reviewing the new requirements and engaging with the US CDC about the upcoming changes so that we can provide further information to Canadian veterinarians and travellers as soon as possible. We are aware that many people have questions about the impacts these new requirements will have on the Canadian veterinary community as well as dog owners, and what these changes will mean for dogs travelling from Canada to the United States. The CFIA is reviewing these changes and will provide further information and guidance as soon as it is available.

We will continue to keep the the veterinary community informed as we address these new requirements, and will provide updates as soon as they are available.

Tick Talk:
Over the past several years there has been a marked increase in tick activity in our area, even during the winter months. This past month alone we have seen 5 patients with live ticks attached to them! Below is a link to tick information for your pet, and a reminder to make sure to refill your pet's monthly prevention medication.

Ticks are arachnids, relatives of spiders, mites and scorpions. They survive by feeding on the blood of animals and humans. Ticks crawl—they don’t jump, fly, or drop from trees.

When you hear the words ‘canine cough’, what comes to mind? Places where large numbers of dogs come together, such as a boarding facility or day care centre?

It’s important to know that canine cough can happen any time dogs interact—during daily
walks, at the dog park, during playdates. This highly contagious respiratory disease can even spread if the contact between dogs is very brief, such as during training classes or in an elevator.

Vaccination can help protect your dog from canine cough. Schedule your dog’s visit today,
and help keep your pet safe when socializing. http://www.ellwoodpark.ca
