Understanding Your Dog's Behaviour: It's About Needs, Not Dominance 🐾

Dogs communicate their needs through behaviour. Every action, whether we label it as good or bad, is an attempt to meet core needs like hunger, physical or mental discomfort, stress, or the need for attention.

By observing these behaviours, we can better understand and meet our dogs' needs, strengthening our relationship with them.

Remember, every wag, bark, or whine has a purpose—it's their way of talking to us. 🐶❤️🐕

There is a new 'dog virus' going around...found out from my friend in Chilliwack whose Doggy daycare let her know there is a breakout in Chilliwack

The daycare stated 'Unfortunately there is a virus going around. We just started seeing dogs get sick late last week. Over the weekend we have heard of many more cases. It seems to be another air borne cold as some of the dogs currently sick haven’t been at the facility in a few weeks but had upcoming bookings.

Symptoms seem to be coughing, sneezing, eye & nose discharge, low energy & some vomiting.'

I will be keeping my personal and dog walking clients away from areas where there are multiple dogs congregating. If your dog has any of these symptoms, please keep them at home or away from other dogs!! Thanks!! 🐾

It is with a heavy broken heart we say 'so long' to our beautiful 'Karma' who was close to 15 years old and was with Hiking Hounds for around 13 years of those years! Oh how we are going to miss that sweet girl but I know she is in a better place with a pain-free feisty whole body again!!
Karma came to us as a 'wild child', with all kinds of quirky behaviours but boy, she was a lively little thing and loved being with all the dogs, so loyal too!! She loved labs, especially chocolate lab Max, and wheaten terrier Dexter, choc lab cross Boone, Cattle dog Ripley and border collie mix Monty....she lived for these guys, loved their energy!! Ahhh she was great fun and well loved by all the pups who knew her!!!
How do you say goodbye to a friend who has been an absolute 'constant' in your life for the past 13 years, helping me through my own 3 dogs' passing's, plus all the beloved pack members who have gone before her?!! She was there for all the ups and downs, all the wonderful adventures and every trail we explored over the years!! She was the 'face' of Hiking Hounds, beautiful and free, she was allowed to just be a dog, with a big ol' smile on her face!! She leaves us with such wonderful memories and a full full heart.. As well as dog walking, Karma boarded with us on numerous occasions where she fit in like part of the family!!
So today, we got to say goodbye to our Karma, to thank her for her love, loyalty and friendship over the years, wish her well on the next leg of her journey and and to say 'that'll do Karma, that'll do good girl, Until we meet again!!! ' Our heart and prayers go out to Karma's parents, Darlene, Neil and Travis, as you grieve the loss of your girl... thank you for allowing us to walk 'Karmalita' and thank you for your wonderful friendship and kindness you have shown us over the years. As I had Karma for so many years, I had lots of pics, sharing some of my faves with you, of Karma and her friends! God bless you!! xoxo

Awareness!

Awareness!

This can happen in a second.⏱️👀❗
Fixation/hyper fixation is an escalation in awareness and if you have a reactive dog usually there is barking, lunges, whining and "digging" in immediately after fixation and unfortunately that reaction can happen just seconds after a "locked on" gaze.
The good news is there are ALWAYS "tells" that your dog has gone from looking to hyper fixation.

If you have a reactive dog, learning all those subtle and not so subtle tells are SO very important. You need to start to read these changes in posture and behaviour so you can act.

Ears change, softness in the body changes, mouths often "slam" closed and there may be a leaning in with a long lowered neck.
Not all dogs show all these changes and the graphic is a generalisation...but it lists many common signs that your dog has become aware of a trigger.

Your dogs coat may never be raised when they see a trigger, they may have a shorter, curlier coat.
There may not even be any changes in the tail for some breeds as they may have little to none or a tightly curled tail.
BUT....there WILL be signs that your dog has just changed from looking to fixating.
A good way to get a better idea of the changes is to have someone film you and your dog when you are nearing a trigger for your dog.....whether that be a cyclist, person, dog or cat. Have someone film it for you.
Watch the video and look at what happens in a split second or seconds leading up to fixation...
Leash tension.
Lowering neck.
Straining forward.
Mouth shutting.
Tail tucking or in a high flagging position.

This is ALL information you can use to lessen reactions and prepare an action plan for when you see those tell tale signs.
Reactivity is a beast.
It is complex and very individual....but if you learn all the signs your dog does give you.....you are on your way to making a real and positive change for you and your dog.

All the best on your reactive journey.

Stay out of Bateman Park water in Abbotsford...contaminated with toxic foam from firefighter efforts around the area, some got in the water system, killed all the fish, etc. :( I believe the park is open but water closed, though hard to keep dogs out unless on leash. Bad timing on one of the hottest weeks of the year .I was sure planning on hanging out there!!! :((
