There really are no words to express the deep sadness and sense of helplessness we are all feeling as the news reports keep coming in about the wildfires decimating our province.

Many of us here on the coast have family, friends or clients that are experiencing first-hand this terrible situation. The way that the entire horse community has stepped up with offers of transport, support and refuge for those being evacuated is, in a word, incredible.

If you are evacuating with your horses it is a good idea to have with you:

• Copies of ownership records (bill of sale, registration papers, Coggins, insurance paperwork etc)
• Microchip information if your horse is chipped
• Photos of your horse
• Enough hay and grain for a week
• List of current medications and doses (your local vet clinic may be closed or evacuated as well during a wildfire)

We have a few suggestions on what to do if you are unable to evacuate with your horses:

• Use spray paint or a livestock crayon to write your name, phone number and address on the side of the horse
• Use clippers to shave your phone number into the horse’s coat
• Braid a temporary ID tag with pre-written contact info into the horse’s mane
• Attach a neck band with your contact information
• If the fire is close and you are unable to get your horses out, do not leave them confined. After getting them out of the barn or pasture, close the doors or gates, as horses in danger will often seek the comfort of the known – their pastures and stalls.

Horses should always have access to fresh, clean water but this is especially crucial during wildfire events. Water allows the airways to stay moist and hydrated and drinking enough allows for the clearance of inhaled particulate matter. If the airways are too dry this matter remains in the lungs and airway passages. Clean the watering buckets/troughs regularly as the ash and other pollutants in smoke can make it unpalatable to horses and they will decrease their drinking. Keep the water source located near the feed source as studies show having clean water near feed increases water consumption. Do not rely on automatic watering systems as power may be lost.

We extend our utmost appreciation and support for the firefighters on the front lines, the support crews and every single person who is helping out in our beautiful province’s season of fire. Let there be rain soon.

Assistant Trainer Kendall Page brought home the $25k Open Aggregate Championship aboard SinginLeviBlues owned by David Parker. Loper Marie Peters was $2000LR Reserve Aggregate Champion riding Pepteau Lafite owned by Sandy Corsan, marking a huge 75 on day two.
